Attributed to Sawrey Gilpin (1733-1807) and George Barrett Senior (1728 or 32-1784), Fox in a woodland clearing, note written (part indistinctly) in ink verso 'one of series of in Gilpin and Barrett "the lake Artists nee 1770" They were ... in the sporting magazine', oil on canvas, 83 x 115cmSporting art in the 18th century is arguably the first true English school of painting. Prior to 1660 (the restoration of Charles II) and for some time into the 18th century painting in England was largely the preserve of foreign artists (Kneller, Lely, van Dyck etc). The Dutch tradition of painting the outdoors was copied by the English but with the focus on hunting, racing and other sporting activities. Sawrey Gilpin's greatest contribution to this genre was to introduce new levels of realism in both anatomy and colour. This painting of a fox has those qualities and Gilpin collaborates with George Barrett to produce a very English sporting painting. This extends to the woodland clearing around the fox which portrays that 'damp fertility' so indicative of the English countryside.

Both bases are not covered in baize and show the weighted metal. The majority of the marks and the high points are only notable by using a jewellers loop. Please note, although these are silver the candlesticks are weighted so we are unable to give true weight of silver content.

Lot 805

A Bow bocage figure of a dancer, circa 1760/70, modelled as a young boy wearing a plumed hat and long jacket with fanciful trousers all with floral pattern standing in front of a large floral encrusted bocage and on a Rococo scrolling ground with further applied floral sprays and heightened with gilding and turquoise, unmarked. Height 22 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: There is a patch to the reverse of the bocage where a leaf was once stuck and in the same area a branch has been broken off. Two branches of the upper section of the bocage have been knocked off and oversprayed. On the reverse of the bocage to the upper left hand section a leaf has been broken in half and a there are further leaves throughout the bocage which have small chips. On first view the flowers all appear to be intact however some, though not all, have petals missing or chipped. The figure's left hand has been off and is restored. Given its faults this is still a rather attractive piece and we would think the faults are inline with something of this nature. I can see no obvious faults to the base or the remainder of the figure.

Other than those faults mentioned the main body and decoration appear to be in good order. The plate has a tiny rim chip and a small amount of gilding loss to the rim. There are three worn patches to the main decoration, the first being to the figure and cart on the left, the second and third small patches appear on the path at the foot of the decoration (almost 6 o'clock if looking on a clock face).
