* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004), A CLEAR VIEW oil on canvas, signed image size 52cm x 64cm, overall size 60.5cm x 71.5cm Framed. Provenance: We are grateful to Lachlan Goudie, artist, writer, broadcaster and the leading authority on the work of his father, for authenticating this painting and confirming that "A ClearView" is likely to date to 1957 "when Dad first went there (Toledo, Spain) and spent a prolonged period staying with friends and painting." Note: Alexander Goudie was born in 1933 at Paisley and, as a child, showed a prodigious talent for drawing. He studied at Glasgow School of Art when William Armour was head of drawing and painting and David Donaldson was the ubiquitous influence. Goudie, as a student at Glasgow, demonstrated his extraordinary ability. He received the Somerville Shanks Prize for Composition and, later, his draughtsmanship and sense of colour was recognized with the award of the Newbery Medal. As a young artist, he grew up admiring three great masters, Sir John Lavery, George Henry and James Guthrie; all artists who had bridged the gap between Glasgow and Paris. It was these artists’ glorious virtuoso control of oil paint that appealed to Goudie, as well as their genre and realist subject matter. Alexander Goudie was elected a member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1956 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. He painted a portrait of the Queen for the Caledonian Club, London (1992/93), and exhibited widely, showing at Harari and Johns, in London, the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and the Musee de la Faience, in Quimper. Sir Timothy Clifford, former Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, said: ''At his best, Goudie could draw better than any of his rivals in Scotland. There was magic and vision in his art and, I expect, history will be kind to him.'' Collections: 79 of Goudie's paintings are held in UK public collections including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Rozelle House Galleries, Paisley Museum & Art Galleries and The Fleming Collection (London). Numerous prestigious corporate collections in the UK and France and in private collections around the world.

* HANNAH FRANK (SCOTTISH 1908 - 2008), IN THOUGHTS FROM THE VISIONS OF THE NIGHT WHEN DEEP SLEEP FALLETH ON MEN (1930) lithograph on paper, signed in pencil, titled and dated 1930 image size 36cm x 25cm, overall size 55cm x 40cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).

A very presentable 1954 Morris Minor series II 803 cc petrol-engined two-door saloon motor car, registration no. FO 7708, first registered on the 10th September 1954 and finished in grey paint-work with red upholstery and carpets. Currently SORN'd and being an Historic Vehicle is M.O.T. exempt, although it is advised that the car should be checked over by a mechanic prior to use on the public highway. The engine number is recorded as APHM 116074. This nice example of the marque has been owned and pampered over many years by a local motor/mechanical engineer, a regular attendee of our auctions, but now sadly no longer with us. The car has been lovingly used and improved by him and is understood to be to the original specification with the exception of the rear axle final-drive ratio, which we are informed has had the original 5.375:1 crown wheel & pinion changed to a higher ratio of 4.55:1, this being far better suited to the modern road system. The speedometer, which currently shows 2,254, miles (not guaranteed correct) has been replaced, presumably to allow for the higher gearing. What is believed to be the original speedometer is also with the car. The car starts easily has excellent oil pressure and drives as she should, the drum brakes being quite effective and the ride is surprisingly resilient even on mediocre surfaces. The Morris minor was developed with the considerable input of Alec Issigonis (later renowned for his design of the revolutionary Mini) as a more modern replacement of the Morris 8. Lord Nuffield apparently, rather cruelly, suggested that the early designs had the appearance of a "poached egg". The early iterations were also considered of inadequate width and an additional four inches were added to the width at its centre, this being evident as the band along the bonnet's centre line, which continued as a design feature in all of the production cars. Initially, the low-light design cars utilised a modified version of the 918 cc side-valve Morris 8 engine with certain modifications including a crankshaft incorporating counter-weights and later with a water circulation pump rather than the old fashioned thermo-siphon principle, which did not facilitate the operation of a cabin heater. In its own way the Morris Minor was also revolutionary in being of unitary construction with torsion-bar independent front suspension, thus providing a very broad engine compartment without the intrusion of a traditional beam front axle, Issigonis's original intention having been for the car to have a newly developed flat-four water cooled power unit. With the increased width and eventually with the headlights being relocated into the front wings the shape became more appealing and one of the classic designs of the era, which made it so popular for family motoring. The flat-four engine never came to fruition and the old side-valve engine was replaced in the series II by Morris's first mass-produced A-series overhead valve engine of some 803 cc, as in the vehicle we have for sale. In spite of its smaller capacity, the A-series engine with its Westlake designed cylinder head had considerably more power than the old side-valve unit and went on to be utilised in a vast range of vehicles of various capacities including 848, 948,1098 & 1275 cc as well as Cooper & Cooper S versions of 970, 997, 998, 1071 & 1275 cc. The last year of use of the A-series engine in a production car was as recent as 2000. Here is an opportunity to purchase an economical motor car that has great character and which is sure to create great interest wherever she goes, especially with the upcoming season of vintage shows and rallies that are scheduled to be run now that Covid-19 appears to be abating. The V5C is present, as well as a number of old MOT certificates, and there is also an original "Morris Minor (Series II) Operation Manual". ****N.B. The Buyer's Premium on this Lot will be 10% + VAT (Total 12%). If purchased via online bidding an additional surcharge will be added.****

WENLOCK OLYMPIAN GAMES INTEREST,a large presentation wrought iron padlock and key, possibly a winning entry for the industrial element of the Games later presented to founder William Penny Brookes, inscribed 'Presented to W. P. Brookes Esqr. by a Member of the Wenlock Olympian Class May 18th 1869', the slide catch enclosing keyhole also engraved 'WEN', the padlock 15.5cm high, 11cm wideFootnote: The Wenlock Games were a forerunner to the modern Olympics founded in 1850 by Dr. William Penny Brookes 'for the promotion of the moral, physical and intellectual improvement of the inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood of Wenlock and especially of the working classes, by the encouragement of outdoor recreation, and by the award of prizes annually at public meetings for skill in athletic exercise and proficiency in intellectual and industrial attainments' (source: Wikipedia). Baron Pierre de Coubertin visited the Wenlock Games in 1890 and founded the International Olympic Committee four years later with his obvservations of the Wenlock Games fundamental in his vision for a modern Olympics, later writing 'If the Olympic Games that Modern Greece has not yet been able to revive still survives there today, it is due, not to a Greek, but to Dr W P Brookes' (source: Wikipedia); sadly Dr. Brookes died just four months before the first modern Summer Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896 but his influence lived on, not least in the naming of Wenlock, one of the mascots of the 2012 London Games.

Gustav Wittje. Die Bedeutung der Düppeler Höhen im Sundewitt mit Plänen und Zeichnungen. Bearbeitet von G. Wittje Hauptmann und Comp. Chef in der 3. Artillerie Brigade, Commandeur der daselbst gewesenen preuss. Artillerie. Manuscript in German with 15 hand-drawn and watercoloured plans. Magdeburg, January 1850. Splendid red velvet binding of the time with gilt fillet, gilt corner pieces in rocaille style, gilt coat of arms of the Royal House of Hanover on front cover, triple gilt edges, endpapers in white glazed paper (backcover with scratch). - Title page with the stamp of Ernst August of Hanover (1771-1851) on verso. - Remarkable and very well preserved manuscript with precise information about a historically important military engineering structure, lavishly bound in a richly gilt contemporary red velvet binding with royal provenance. It deals with an extensive but short-lived military engineering project during the Danish-Prussian War of 1848-1851, which broke out as a result of the opposing aims of Danish and German nationalists and led to the so-called First Schleswig War. Dybbøl Fortress is situated on a short blunt peninsula preventing access to the fortress by land, and had an enclosed landing stage for the ferry across the Alssund to Sønderborg on the island of Als. Our manuscript describes in great detail the geographical location, dimensions and structures of the redoubts, which were built by engineers from the Prussian army who had to deal with transport problems and problems caused by the surrounding sea, resulting in many hydraulic engineering challenges. As early as February 1849, the massive redoubts were demolished by Prussian sappers and blown up a few months later in September 1849, after the defeat of the Danish army. The manuscript is addressed to the Royal House of Hanover and bears its gilded coat of arms on the front cover. Apart from the manuscript never published here, two other manuscripts could be located, one of which is lost today (according to Stuhlmann, Die königl. Sächs. Brigade im Deutsch-Dänischen Feldzug 1849); the other manuscript is now in the holdings of the Sigmaringen Court Library (cat. 213).
