First edition, by John Gibson (Merchant in Glasgow), published 'for the author' [title; preface, vii pp.; text, 391 pp.], original full calf boards, later spine reinforcement, text block solid. 550 grams, 21.5 x 14cm (8 1/2 x 5 1/2"). [No Reserve] Good condition; some browning, boards rubbed and corners bumped; no map.
Bronze Age, 2000-900 BC. A group of three items comprising: one half of a circular Bronze Age stone metal casting mould for a circular mount or object, with casting channel in a coarse stone (with inked reference 'OXON'), dating to circa 1200 BC; a ground stone Bronze Age archer's wrist guard in a grey shale with two full and one partial perforations for tying thongs, chipped at two corners (with inked reference 'Feltwell'), dating to circa 600 BC; and a shard of Bronze Age ceramic Beaker vessel showing 'fingernail' impressed ornament (with inked reference 'Icklingham, Suffolk'), dating to circa 900 BC. 270 grams total, 50-70 mm (2-3"). Ex Michael Nellist collection; acquired from Keith Lloyd (with list extract), one from Bonhams 13/04/2011, lot 224 (ex Ancient Relics with certificate, ex R. S. Murray collection) and one Keith Lloyd; findspots as stated. The Mike Nellist Collection. His interest in antiquity was piqued when, during the 1970s, he spent some time working in Israel and had the opportunity to visit Roman-period locations including Lake Galilee and Masada, the site of the famous Judaean revolt and subsequent massacre. He made his first purchases at that time and was soon building an enviable collection of artefacts. While studying at university, he was able to study human remains at first hand in conjunction with archaeological research and from there his passion for the human aspects of historical research was kindled. An undated archaistic Amlash terracotta jug with three conical legs, domed body, funicular head with plaited strap handle to the rear; a band of applied chevron ornament to the chest and flanks, the spout with pouring lip and discoid strainer. 560 grams, 18 cm (7"). Private collection, West London, UK; acquired in the 1990s. The Amlash culture flourished in Northern Iran from the late second and early first millennia BC. Representations of animal figures are abundant in Amlash pottery and are usually depictions of common animals to that region, namely ram, ox, horse, stag, boar and ibex. Fine condition.

Two small circular silver trinket bowls, the base of the first set with a British Trade Dollar coin (minted in Bombay and dated 1900) and the second with a Chinese Hu-Peh Province Dollar (undated but struck 1909-1911 AD"). 100 grams total, 80mm (3 1/4"). Meldahl Nielsen, serial number D.550828 and Sweden, 5 kronor, 1948, 90th birthday of King Gustaf V issue, serial number 0441637. 120-140mm. Ex Walter Steinberg collection; acquired 1960s-1970s. Pick 72a/Pick 8c/Pick 41a. Walter Steinberg has been a well-known figure at fairs, sales and events for many years. Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter has had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he has now retired to New York and decided that the time has come to pass on the antiquities and coins he has collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contains many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter hopes that the items he collected will now find new homes with the next generation of collectors. Group comprising: George V, silver jubilee issue, 1935 (St George and dragon); George VI, Festival of Britian issue, 1951 (St George and dragon) and Elizabeth II, Coronation issue, 1953 (4; 1 in official case, 1 in later case and 2 loose"). S. 4048/S. 4111/S. 4136. [6, No Reserve] First very fine, second better, others uncirculated with minor bag marks.
19th-20th century AD. A flat-section hoop and expanding shoulders, each with a floral plaque; bezel with incised 'magic square' of order 5 with numerical notation above and below. 6.61 grams, 21mm overall, 18.70mm internal diameter (approximate size British R, USA 8 1/2, Europe 18.75, Japan 18) (3/4"). Ex Swiss collection; acquired 1980s. Known as Buduh these magic squares predate Islam and have been found in a number of ancient cultures; the earliest example comes from China and dates to the sixth century BC. It is possible that the idea of magic squares entered into Islamic culture when the Arabs first went to India on trading expeditions. They are used for a number of purposes such as helping find love; curing headaches, stomach ailments, fevers, and epilepsy; preventing theft, attacks by bandits, and poisonings; and helping to find lost objects. [No Reserve] Very fine condition.
