An historically important first hand account relating to the collision between HMS Victoria and HMS Camperdown - an emotive m/s letter, dated "Sunday Afternoon 9th July `93" written aboard HMS Orion, Malta, addressed to "Dear Butler" and signed John Baggett who was aboard HMS Victoria on 22nd June 1893 "We expect the Triumph here tomorrow but we have had no definite orders about when we shall go home which everyone is anxiously waiting for, in fact we are up to fever pitch for those of us who are left are very much shaken up with our fearful experience...the Admiral, Flag Lieut, Staff Comd, Flag Captain and myself with three midshipmen were on top of the Chart house just before the Order to make the signal was given. When it came down and I reported the Camperdown`s helm hard over, as well as our own 1 could see that nothing in this world would save either her or us, but as we went astern with one screw that assisted our head round (? unclear) I should say, 3 points farther than Campderdown so we got it about 3 points on starboard bow. It put me in mind of a plough turning the soil over as she came through the upper deck and coming in where my mess was situated....some poor fellows were smashed to atoms in the mess. I remained at my station on top of the Chart House until I went to see the clock to see what time the Collision occurred, than I went back again and the ship was turning gradually over to starboard...", he then refers to signals given.. "I continued to try to get signal up when a very heavy lurch came and I seized the fore and aft bridge rails & looking forward at the same time saw the Admiral facing bravely up to meet his doom, the next moment I was going down pinned in the bridge & a choking sensation which was fearful. I struggled and by lucky providence I was washed from under the bridge & was coming up her bottom as she was going down when a chain of one of the gunports got around my neck & I was being taken down again..."; he then describes his escape (part illegible through folds). A separate slip of paper (approx 8" x 3½" split in two) continues "I have read of men facing death without a murmur and during the time the ship was above water there was not a murmur of noise from a man and only when we were going down a deep groan from the men was heard. Many there were who fell in on the quarter deck in obedience of orders and these fell in until their foothold were gone & I believe a great many perished that way". The reverse of this second sheet shows a sketch indicating his position when Victoria turned over. The main letter (4½" x 7" 4 sides) basically GC (some stains and folds) Plate 2. Note: HMS Victoria collided with Camperdown off the Tripoli waterfront during fleet manoeuvres. The officer in charge V.Admiral Sir George Tryon had miscalculated the space required for the two vessels to turn safely. Amongst the survivors was John Jellicoe who was later to take command at Jutland.
