Zao Wou-Ki (Chinese, 1921-2013) La Theiere signed lower left and numbered 21/60 (XXI/LX) lithograph 35 x 50cm (14 x 20in) Zou Wou-Ki, fast becoming recognised as one of the most successful Chinese painters of the 20th century, is known for his abstract oil paintings, prints and ink work. Wou-ki was born in Beijing in 1920 and educated at the prestigious Hangzhou National College of Art (today the China Academy of Art), before relocating to Paris in 1948, where he became a French citizen in 1964. His abstract style is said to be influenced by Paul Klee, Joan Miro, Picasso, the Abstract expressionists and on moving to Paris, Matisse and Cezanne. Wou-ki`s art is said to encapsulate the union of the two often incongruous cultures and aesthetic visions of France and China. His artistic breakthrough came with his 1954 masterpiece ""Wind,"" a painting that was both his first purely figurative work and a return to his Chinese roots. In a 1962 interview with the French magazine Preuves, he said that, ""Although the influence of Paris is undeniable in all my training as an artist, I also wish to say that I have gradually rediscovered China."" He added, ""Paradoxically, perhaps, it is to Paris I owe this return to my deepest origins."" After 1959, as his work became increasingly figurative, he stopped naming his work, finishing them only with their date of completion. The apparent disorder of his paintings is sometimes described as Daoist in nature. Before his death, Wou-Ki was called one of the top-selling living Chinese artists by journalists and art dealers; his auction record of RMB 89,680,000 (£8,782,659) was set at Sotheby`s, Beijing, on 1 December 2013. Wou-Ki died in April 2013 at his home in Switzerland, after suffering from Alzheimer`s in his later years. Zao`s vibrant, highly-worked style combined ornate traditional Chinese landscape painting with the freer language of European abstraction studied from Paul Klee and Picasso. His works are in major international public art collections, including the Tate, MoMA and the Guggenheim; he was also hailed by former French President Jacques Chirac, an enthusiastic Orientalist. It is in China, which he left aged 28, narrowly escaping an artistic career in the service of the Communist regime, that he is most revered . His death was widely reported in state newspapers and he was described as being ""like a god in China - the master of post-war"" by the Hong Kong art dealer Pascal de Sarthe. Condition is fine - one very minor damage to the edge of paper upper left
