MASHOne Sheet (27" X 41"); First ReleaseVery Fine- on Linen 20th Century Fox, 1970Offered here is the very rare first release poster, known as the "Gives a Damn style," which was released prior to the more commonly seen "Review"-style one sheet. The tag like, "Mash Gives a Damn," is a response to the Ratings Administration that famously took issue with the frequency with which the word "damn" was used in the movie. This very scarce first release poster has been professionally linen mounted with sporadic airbrushing to the white backgrounds.Based on Richard Hooker's 1968 novel, MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, and inspiring in turn the award-winning TV series that ran from 1972 until 1983, this film, directed by Robert Altman and written by formerly blacklisted screenwriter and member of the "Hollywood Ten," Ring Lardner, Jr., features a stunning cast, including Donald Sutherland, Tom Skerrit, Elliot Gould, Robert Duvall, Sally Kellerman, Rene Auberjonois, and Gary Burghoff (the only actor to appear in both the movie and on the TV series), launching the careers of many involved. Nominated for five Academy Awards (it won Best Screenplay and the Palm d'Or at Cannes). This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
THE DIRTY DOZENSubway (59.25" x 45.5")Very Fine+ on Linen; Artist Frank McCarthy United Artists, 1965The advertising department for UA's domestic release was extensive for this fourth James Bond campaign. Created were individual subway posters for use on the New York subway. Each poster has different artwork and a strong tagline - Look Up, Look Down, and Look Out! This Robert McGinnis artwork image is by far the most rare of all the title's subways. The poster has been professionally placed on linen with almost no interior restoration other than fold line touch up. The borders have sporadic airbrush work. The fourth James Bond movie starring Sean Connery features the iconic spy going head-to-head against Emilio Largo, the second-in-command of the criminal organization SPECTRE. Interestingly, this movie was originally planned to be the first in the series but was held back due to a dispute over the rights to the novel. This delay ultimately led to the creation of a competing Bond movie, "Never Say Never Again," which was released in 1983.This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
MAD MAXBritish Quad (30" x 40")Very Fine on Linen; Artist Tom Beauvais Columbia-EMI-Warner Bros. , 1979This clean quad has only had slight minor touchups to fold lines, corners and the orange smoke in the center, but otherwise is in fantastic condition and presents impeccably. This low-budget, independently-made dystopian action film, cast with unknown stars, helmed by an unknown, first-time director, and written by a finance journalist crafting his first screenplay, would likely not have been singled out at the time as the beginning of a highly successful franchise and the launching pad for a few remarkable careers, but that's precisely what it did. Mad Max (1979) was the brainchild of George Miller, an emergency room doctor in Sydney, who was intimately familiar with the kinds of injury and death seen in this film about Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), a cop-turned-vigilante trying to bring law and order to collapsing society (Miller raised part of the money for this film by doing several months of emergency medical calls). The initial film was followed by three sequels (the first two with Gibson) and continues to be a fan-favorite. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
WEREWOLF OF LONDONHalf Sheet (22" x 28")Fine Rolled Realart, R-1951This is a bright and rolled copy that shows several tears in the borders. They have been supported on the verso with tape. The borders also show some wear and the right lower corner has been folded back previously. The first-ever feature-length film about a werewolf, this Universal horror stars Henry Hull as an English botanist who contracts lycanthropy while on an expedition to Tibet, and goes on the rampage in London. The movie is credited with establishing several tropes of the werewolf legend. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
JAWSOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Near Mint Flat Folded; Artist Roger Kastel Universal, 1975Roger Kastel's shark artwork is truly iconic and this poster for Jaws grows in value every year. Those who were present when the film premiered never forgot seeing this poster outside the theater and wondered what scary cinematic sights were in store. This is a beautiful flat-folded poster with no vertical fold. It is scarce to find in this glorious condition with almost no perceptible flaws. The wear to the folds is minimal.Despite a nightmarish shoot and a malfunctioning mechanical shark, young director Steven Spielberg (only 27) made Jaws one of the most successful films ever released. Matching its thrills and scares with some deep character work, it has gone down in film history as the first-ever summer blockbuster. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
FIVE STAR FINALCGC Graded Lobby Card (11" x 14")Very Good+ First National, 1931The card offered here features an evocative image of Robinson as Gazette editor Joseph R. Randall, a legitimate journalist caught up in the snares of the newspaper business, surrounded by papers bearing the salacious headlines that were designed not so much to inform but to satisfy the public's insatiable demand for sensationalism. This lobby card has been CGC graded at 5.0, which is Very Good This film, represented here by an exquisite lobby card, starred Edward G. Robinson, Aline MacMahon (in her film debut), and a pre-Frankenstein Boris Karloff (as the unctuous and perfectly-named "Reverend" T. Vernon Isopod) as staff members of New York Evening Gazette whose unscrupulous and underhanded methods of covering a controversial story result in tragedy, a bitter condemnation of the "sell papers at any cost" attitude of many newsmen, both then and now. Five Star Final was nominated for an Outstanding Production Oscar at that year's Academy Awards and was named one of the Ten Best Films of 1931 by Film Daily. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEINCGC Graded Lobby Card (11" x 14")Very Fine- Universal, 1942This lobby card has been CGC graded at 7.5, which is Very Fine-. Horror stalwart Lon Chaney Jr made his first appearance as Frankenstein's Monster in Universal Studios' fourth Frankenstein film, in which the monster and Ygor (Bela Lugosi) seek the help of Dr. Frankenstein's youngest son, Ludwig (Cedric Hardwicke). This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFSLobby Card Set (8) (11" x 14")Very Fine RKO, 1937Now, you can acquire an exquisite set of eight full-color lobby cards from this landmark production, one of the most beloved films of all time, selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Film Registry in 1989 as part of its first crop of entries. This exquisitely rendered set features Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs, and even the Evil Queen (in her old hag disguise) on one card. All of the cards are bright and in very clean condition. All but a couple of the cards have small pieces of white tape on the verso which appears to be supporting pinholes in the card. Only the title card as any surface airbrush work and that is sporadically around the borders. A very clean set and very scarce.Walt Disney sank everything he had into this production, even mortgaging his home to raise the needed capital. Originally estimated to cost $250,000 (ten times the budget of the typical Silly Symphonies short), the film had an initial budget of $150,000 and eventually ran to nearly $1.5 million, an unheard-of sum for any feature film at the time. One of the most outstanding achievements in film history, both a critical and commercial success, that would quickly become the most successful sound film of all time (although it would be replaced in that position by 1939's Gone with the Wind). It also laid the foundation for the Disney empire, as the profits from this film allowed Disney to build a new studio on 51 acres of land in Burbank, CA. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACEInsert (14" x 36"); 3-D StyleVery Fine- Folded; Artist Joseph Smith Universal International, 1953This lot offers the highly sought insert poster for this 3D entry into the sci-fi genre early into the decade of the 1950s. Wonderful Joseph Smith artwork graces this brilliant poster. This insert has mild fold wear, plus edge and border wear including tiny tears, creasing, and sporadic tape residue. The images here are untouched and the poster displays quite well. Universal's first-ever 3D film was this sci-fi horror, in which a meteorite crashes in Arizona and is revealed to be a spaceship containing shape-shifting alien monsters that have infiltrated the nearby town of Sand Rock. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
THE GAME THAT KILLSOne Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- on Linen Columbia, 1937Paper from this title is extremely scarce, as it is prized by Hayworth devotees, poster aficionados, and hockey fans alike. The dramatic poster offered here, with its scene of mayhem in the rink, features a beautiful image of Hayworth in the lower right, along with Quigley, with whom she made five pictures at Columbia, of which this is the fourth. A poster with some light touchups to fold lines and cross folds. Still evident are a few small minor chips at the end of two horizontal folds in the border and corner pinholes. The artwork is relatively untouched and as such displays very well. It's murder on ice in this hockey mystery film when Tom Ferguson (Ward Bond) is killed during an in-game "accident," leading his brother Alec (Charles Quigley) to join the team to investigate the matter. This was one of the first films in which Rita Hayworth used her now-familiar stage name, as her real name, Rita Cansino, was considered too "exotic." Columbia Studio head Harry Cohn, who had just signed the actress to a seven-year contract, thought that the name, and the "Mediterranean" image that went with it, would limit her choice of roles. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
BLOOD SIMPLEOne-Sheet (25" x 39); International StyleVery Fine Folded Skouras Pictures, 1984This more scarce and sensual International style for the Coen Bros. debut classic features the lead lovers in a passionate embrace all over the barrel of a gun.A very clean unrestored poster with some fold wear. This gripping neo-noir crime film, about a Texas bartender having an affair with the boss's wife and the complicated murder plot that follows, stars John Getz, Frances McDormand (in her screen debut), Dan Hedaya, and M. Emmet Walsh. The directorial debut of Joel and Ethan Cohen (who also wrote the screenplay and edited the film), was also the first major film by cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld, who later emerged as an influential director in his own right. While the film was only a moderate success at the box office, it was a massive critical hit, launching several essential careers. As well, it has been widely hailed as one of the most important independent films ever made, a claim that is hard to dispute. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'SOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine+ Folded; Artist Robert McGinnis Paramount, 1961Artist Robert McGinnis, in one of his first film poster assignments, created an indelible image of Hepburn as the illusive female character. Known by collectors to be one of the most desirable posters from the 1960s.A beautiful condition one sheet with no restoration. The poster has pinholes in the corners. If you have been looking for a copy of this in great shape, this is it. Based on the Truman Capote novella, Blake Edwards' romantic comedy gave the genre one of its most iconic characters in Audrey Hepburn's "daring, darling" socialite Holly Golightly, complete with Givenchy "little black dress" and Manhattan "socialite" sunglasses. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
THE PENALTYCGC Graded Lobby Card (11" x 14")Very Fine+ Goldwyn, 1920The exquisite CGC-graded lobby card offered here presents a beautiful image of Chaney as Blizzard, in which his paraplegic status is on full display (his portrayal was so successful that the producers of The Penalty felt obliged to include a filmed epilogue of Chaney, complete with both legs, at the end of the picture to assure audiences that Chaney was indeed in full possession of all his limbs). As with all of Chaney's films, the paper produced to promote them is rare and highly valued, especially a piece with such a striking image of this excellent star. This lobby card has been CGC graded at 9.0, which is Very Fine+. Before there was Erik, the Phantom of the Opera, before Quasimodo, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, there was Blizzard, the legless crime boss of The Penalty (1920), arguably Lon Chaney's first genuinely great movie. In order to create the illusion of leglessness, Chaney had two leather cups created into which he could insert his knees while his lower legs were bound tightly behind him, hidden by the long coat he wore. In this way, he could effectively walk, run, and jump on his knees, an effect that was highly effective on screen but also incredibly painful. This, along with his portrayal of Blind Pew in Treasure Island (1920), firmly cemented Chaney as one of Hollywood's greatest character actors and one of its most bankable stars, willing to go to any extreme to create his bizarre and memorable characters. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
WESTWORLDOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Folded; Artist Neal Adams MGM , 1973The one sheet offered here is the artwork by famed comic book illustrator Neal Adams, showing Brynner's Gunslinger revealed as a mechanical creation.A clean and bright poster with some minor fold wear including slight separation on the lower fold end, general light scattered creasing, and staple marks in the borders with one In the center and a little pull in the upper right. In 1973, audiences were treated to the new science-fiction Western spectacular Westworld, about an advanced interactive amusement park where the android characters all start to malfunction, with dangerous and murderous results. Written and helmed by first-time director Michael Crichton (whose book, Jurassic Park, would become a franchise-maker in 1990), and starring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, and James Brolin. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
THE SEARCHERSOne-Sheet (27" x 41.5")Very Fine- on Linen Warner Bros., 1956Steeped in beautiful imagery destined to match the film's epic VistaVision cinematography, this Bill Gold one-sheet for John Ford's classic western depicts the two horse-bound leads, John Wayne and Jeffrey Hunter, amidst the iconic cliffsides of Monument Valley. This linen-backed poster was sympathetically restored to address fold wear and pinholes in the borders with touch-ups to the fold lines and airbrushing to the left side borders. It is now in excellent overall condition.Among the finest films ever produced, John Ford's The Searchers redefined the American Western and turned John Wayne and Natalie Wood into two of Hollywood's most famous stars. Known for its epic vistas and complex storytelling, the film was one of the first 25 films ever added to the Library of Congress for its impact on global culture. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
JAWSHalf Sheet (22" X 28")Near Mint Rolled; Artist Roger Kastel Universal, 1975A more condensed poster format with this half sheet version of the infamous Roger Kastel poster artwork. An absolutely beautiful rolled poster with only one pinhole in a lower corner and a couple of small crimps within the blue title field.Despite a nightmarish shoot and a malfunctioning mechanical shark, young director Steven Spielberg (only 27) made Jaws one of the most successful films ever released. JAMES BOND: THUNDERBALLThree Sheet (40.5" x 81")Very Fine- Folded; Artist Frank McCarthy & Robert McGinnis United Artists, 1965This three sheet poster conveys all the action, danger, and beauty in a single image, thanks to the combined talents of artists Frank McCarthy and Robert McGinnis. This folded poster in two parts has edge wear, including tiny tears at the end of various horizontal folds, some of which are backed by archival tape. There is also some smudging in the lower portion of the poster in the credits, scattered pinholes in the borders and a few in the image, and also some tanning on the verso that only slightly bleeds through to the front. The image itself is in very good condition and the stamp on the verso does not bleed through. The fourth Sean Connery Bond film pits 007 against SPECTRE Number Two Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi), and was initially intended to be the first. However, it was delayed due to a rights dispute over the novel, which would eventually result in 1983's rival Bond film Never Say Never Again. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
ZULUItalian 4-Fogli (55" x 78"); Style AFine+ Folded; Artist Enzo Nistri Paramount, 1964A bright and colorful poster with fold wear including tiny tears, chipping, and some separation and some sporadic tanning in areas.Filmed on location in Natal National Park in South Africa, Zulu is an epic film told in an appropriately grand scale, and notable as well for providing Michael Caine's first major screen role. The story is based on the historical Battle of Rorke's Drift in 1879, in which 139 British troops successfully defended a lone outpost against more than 4,000 Zulu warriors. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. 'BLUE BLAZES' RAWDENOne-Sheet (28" x 41"); Tim Matheson CollectionVery Fine on Linen Artcraft Pictures Corp., 1918There were two styles of one sheets to this Western film and this style we've not seen before. In 1907, he left his successful career as a Broadway Shakespearean actor to venture into the unknown potential of the silver screen, appearing as Messala in the first cinematic version of Ben Hur. It wasn't until seven years later, with his leading role in The Bargain, that he gained instant popularity and became one of Hollywood's first big stars at the age of fifty. Hart's focus on historical accuracy, true stories of real-life pioneers, and a gritty morality made his Westerns extremely popular at the box office until newer stars like Tom Mix introduced fast-paced, flashier shows. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th.
