In 1910 he was given command of one of the first German submarines, U-9. On 22nd September 1944 while patrolling the region of the southern North Sea know to the British as Broad 14's, U-9 intercepted three warships of the 7th Cruiser Squadron, Widdegen fired off all six of his torpedoes, reloaded whilst submerged and in less than an hour sank the three British armoured cruisers HMS Aboukir, HMS Hogue and HMS Cressy. 62 Officers and 1397 men were killed, only 837 survived. Widdigen was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd and 1st Class.
