The condition of this volume is similar to Volume 1, in that the first and last few plates have some spotting, but they generally get cleaner further into the book.Both bindings good but with some scuffing and shelf wear.

Two volumes of 'The Paston Letters', 1872, each volume bearing the following bookplates to front paste-down endpapers: Hamilton Owen Robert (1843-1902), the engineer who designed and installed the original raising mechanism of Tower Bridge; the second bookplate, pasted over the edges of the first, for Josiah C. Wedgwood (1872-1943), the British Liberal and Labour politician who served in government under Ramsay MacDonald (and great-great-grandson of the famous potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood). Together with a copy of 'Select Statutes and Other Constitutional Documents Illustrative of the Reigns of Elizabeth and James I', G. W. Prothero, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1894; again bearing an armorial bookplate (different design) for Josiah C. Wedgwood. (3)

285-246 BC. Tetradrachm, 14.21gg (1h). Sidon, c. 265/4-262/1 BC. Obv: Diademed bust of Ptolemy I right, aegis (off flan) knotted around neck. Rx: Î TOΛEMAIOY - BAΣIΛEΩΣ Eagle standing left on thunderbolt, in left field mintmark ΣI above encircled N, these marks engraved over an earlier mintmark ΣI. Meydancikkale pl. 141, 4665. Svoronos 718. A reverse die with the field marks similarly re-engraved, proving that the issue with marks ΣI above encircled N followed that with just ΣI, was first noticed by Davesne and Le Rider, Le trésor de Meydancikkale, Paris 1989, p. 268. At least three reverse dies underwent this alteration: (a) Meydancikkale 4664-5; (b) our coin and Freeman & Sear, MBS 15, 27 June 2008, lot 222; (c) Argenor 5, 29 April 2002, lot 126. Two further specimens, BM 35 and in trade (Rollin & Feuardent), were listed but not illustrated by Svoronos 718, who wrongly interpreted the recut field marks as deriving from double-striking. VF.

Although the initial issue of the denarius and its fractions are assigned by Crawford to the mint of Rome, recent studies suggest that the denarius was in fact first struck in Apulia. VF+.

Purchased from CNG, September 2002. Laureate obverse dies in this style were used in three successive issues at Lugdunum, first in those dated IMP XII or IMP XIIII, and finally in that with reverse type C CAES AVGVS F, Caius Caesar on horseback right, three standards behind horse. "Caligula at first intended to bestow on Tiberius similar honours to those enjoyed by Augustus, but desisted in face of the passive resistance of the Senate. The two stars (on his earliest aurei and denarii) suggest two 'divi', Augustus and (Tiberius)" (Mattingly, BMC I, p. cxliv). Exceptional portraits. Toned EF.

Purchased from Spartan Numismatics, September 2006. Agrippina's rapid loss of influence after successfully engineering Claudius' death and Nero's accession to the throne, culminating in her expulsion from the palace by Nero, is reflected in the gold and silver coinage of Nero's first regnal year. Agrippina is prominent in Nero's first coin type as emperor, shown by our denarius: her titles occupy the obverse, relegating Nero's titles to the reverse, and her portrait faces Nero's, though in the subordinate right-hand position. In the second type, the titles changed places, Nero's now occupying the obverse, and the portraits became jugate, with Agrippina behind Nero. Thereafter, Agrippina was entirely excluded from the coinage. Excellent vis-á-vis portraits of Nero and his mother. Planchet break on Agrippina's head. aEF.

Rx: LVNA LVCIFERA Luna in biga of horses left, with the horses' hind legs bent and not resting on a ground line; Luna holds the reins and has a crescent on her head and a fold of drapery encircling her head. BM 9. Cohen 106 (3 Fr.). RIC 379a. Scarce: only eight specimens in Reka Devnia hoard.. Ex Philip T. Ashton Collection. Ex Pegasi 23, November 2010, lot 529. C. Clay has observed that the standard catalogues fail to distinguish the two consecutive varieties of this reverse type: first as on our coin, with the horses' hind legs bent and no ground line, struck between 215 and early 217 AD; second with the horses' hind legs extended straight and with ground line, e.g. BMC pl. 67.10, struck from a little later in 217 until the end of Caracalla's reign. RIC² online 10 (8 spec., all from the same die pair as ours). RIC first ed. 176 (R2, misattributed to Siscia). Cohen 208 (800 Fr.). Aurei of Claudius II were very rare in Cohen's day, the various types being priced by him at between 800 and 1200 francs each, but have become commoner since the discovery of the Lava Hoard in the sea off Corsica in 1957 and later years. Very rare. Holed in antiquity; otherwise Mint State.

Rx: Justinian standing facing, wearing loros and crown, holding cross potent on step and akakia. Sear 1256. DO 14. MIB 16. Much better struck than usual for this issue. The portrait of Christ is exceptionally sharp, and even the miniature portrait of the emperor on the reverse is recognizable. Some die breaks and die wear. Mint State.

Alec Bedser 5x3 signed b/w photo. English cricketer, primarily a medium-fast bowler. He is widely regarded as one of the best English cricketers of the 20th century. Bedser played first-class cricket for Surrey from 1939 to 1960 alongside his identical twin brother Eric. He took 1924 first-class wickets in 485 matches. He played Test cricket for England from 1946 to 1955, taking 236 wickets in 51 Test matches. He passed Clarrie Grimmett's world record for Test wickets in 1953. He held the record until his final tally was passed by Brian Statham in 1963. After retirement as an active cricketer, Bedser became the chairman of selectors for the English national cricket team and was the president of Surrey County Cricket Club.
