SIR MARTIN ARCHER SHEE PRA (1769-1850)Portrait of Master George O'Connor of Castleknock, (1778-1842) Dressed in Red with Buff Breeches Sitting in a ChairOil on canvas, 76 x 64cmIn a Georgian carved and gilded frameProvenance: Painted circa 1786, and then by family descent until sold at Christie’s, 13 December 1912 (as by George Romney) for 720 guineas; Private collection, USA; Mallet, Bond Street, London where acquired in 2009 by the present owner; Private collection since 2009.Literature: W.G. Strickland, Dictionary of Irish Artists (Dublin and London, 1913) Volume 2, p. 343, as by Martin Archer Shee and painted in Dublin about 1786.Exhibited: An Age of Elegance, Irish Art in the Eighteenth Century, Mallett, Lyons Village, County Kildare, 2008.Sir Martin Archer Shee, the only Irish President of the Royal Academy, was born in Dublin on 20 December 1769, into a family originally from Kilkenny which had subsequently moved to County Mayo. He was sent to school in Dublin and there first evinced the talent as a draughtsman, which subsequently became his hallmark. Shee entered the Dublin Society’s Drawing Schools in 1781, at the age of twelve, where under the tutelage of Francis Robert West he won virtually all the medals and prizes for which he was entered, notably the medal for landscape (1782) and portraiture (1783). At the age of 16 or 17, he set up his own studio at 32 Dame Street, Dublin, and, by 1786, was ‘as busy as anyone with one head and two hands can possibly be….. I have pictures in hand to the amount of more than 50 guineas…..I am also to receive a silver palette from the Dublin Society in token of the approbation of my pictures’. The present painting dates from these years of early success in Dublin and is a very rare example of Shee’s short period working in his native land.Encouraged by Gilbert Stuart, the American painter then working in Ireland, in June 1788 he moved to England, working initially as a copyist for the engravers Macklin and Boydell. He was subsequently introduced to Sir Joshua Reynolds, who advised him to join the Royal Academy Schools, to which he was admitted in November 1790, just before his 21st birthday, and by the following year he was showing the first of his very many exhibits at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. He was admitted an Associate of the Academy in 1798 and henceforth his career was that of the hugely successful portrait painter, especially when, after the death of Sir Thomas Lawrence in 1830, he was elected by a large majority as President of the Royal Academy; in the same year he was knighted. Shee was a member of the Society of Dilettanti, the Royal Society and several overseas cultural institutes and academies. Painting apart, he was a poet, critic, and playwright.  He died at Brighton on 19th August 1850.George O'Connor was the son of the Rev. John O'Connor of Tipperary (1738-1803), who became vicar of Arboe in 1773, and Rector of Castlenock, County Dublin, in 1794. Like his father before him, George was educated at Trinity College Dublin, where he matriculated on 6 October 1794 at the age of 15, proceeding Bachelor of Arts in the Winter Term of 1799. He was received, like his father, into the ministry, and for more than thirty years was a prebendary of St. Patrick's Cathedral, also serving in succession to his father as rector of the united parishes of Castleknock and Clonsilla in the Dublin Diocese, and of Donaghpatrick in the Diocese of Meath. George died on 14th November 1842 aged sixty-four, and a memorial and bust were erected to his memory at the church in Castleknock.According to the inscription he was ‘a fond and affectionate husband, a wise and tender parent, a tried and valued friend, excelled by none’.

James Sharples (1751-1811) Pastel drawingHead and shoulders portrait of George Washington (1796-1801), in profile, 23cm x 18cm Provenance: this picture was formerly at Bowden Hall in Upton St Leonards, near Gloucester, and has remained in the family collection.  It is believed that the portrait was once owned by 19th century British collector Jeffery Whitehead and was exhibited in London twice while in his possession - in 1889 in 'A Century of British Art (2nd series) from 1737 to 1837', London, Grosvenor Gallery, incorrectly attributed to John Russell.  A fragment of this catalogue is attached verso.  Then in 1891 it was exhibited in 'The Royal House of Guelph, London, the New Gallery', correctly attributed to James Sharples (known at the time as 'Sharpless'), there is a handwritten note on the reverse of the pastel dated 1889 confirming the correct attribution in this second exhibition - 'Portrait of George Washington. Sharpless was a crayon draughtsman who came to this country (America) in 1794 and made profile portraits in pastel of many provincial men.  In 1796, being in Philadelphia, Washington sat to him, and Sharpless's portrait of Washington is the best known profile likeness of the subject.  The artist made many copies of the original and sold them for $15 apiece.  Century Magazine April 1889'.  It is thought that the picture then sold in the Christie's auction of Jeffrey Whitehead's collection in London, 1915 (lot 57 for 15 guineas) and was bought by Schroeder, most likely a picture dealer.  It then found its way to the family collection in the Cotswolds.  From this same collection, and also with an American theme, earlier this year The Cotswold Auction Company sold the first African-American published book of poetry by a slave girl, Phyllis Wheatley, 1773, for £16,500. (see Books and Works on Paper Antiques Trade Gazette No.2504). Please see Neil Jeffares 'Dictionary of Pastellists' entry J.675.697.PLEASE NOTE - if you would like to bid online on this lot please contact the auctioneers beforehand for AML compliance in order to do so. Condition ReportGenerally in good condition, requiring very little or no conservation treatment. ● The pastel was in direct contact with the glass; some off-setting of pigment onto glass, however this slight tansfer has not detracted from the clarity of the drawing.● The pastel drawing was backed with cotton wool, which was stained and dirty.● The pastel paper displays some rough cut edges.● Very slightly worn corners, and a tiny edge tear in the middle of the right hand edge.● Two very small pin-prick holes – generally inperceptible.● Slight scuffing to pastel surface to the top right in the blue background.● Some fiberous fluff on the surface, detached from the cotton wool backing.● Small spot in the sitter’s hairline area – possibly flecks in the paper or slight oxidized lead white.● Other non-detracting small flecks, probably due to loose pigment transfer.● Loose fibres from the cotton wool backing are deposited on the verso. The cotton wool has formed a protective barrier, saving the portrait from becoming acidic due to direct contact with the wooden backing board.Remedial treatment carried out on 11 October: ● The portrait was carefully removed form the frame for assessment. ● Labels removed due to brittle & failing tape. ● Lables encapsulated in inert Mylar sleeves to protect them from physical damage. ● Archival double-sided tape has been added to the sleeves in order to attachment them to back of the frame as required. ● The old cotton wool backing was stained and dirty. It was removed & retained in a Mylar sleeve. ● Loose particles of dirt were removed from the surface of the portrait. ● The pastel portait was mounted onto backing card to provide a stable, protective barrier from the wooden backing board. Materials: 100% cotton acid-free museum mount board; Removeable archival mounting strips to hold the pastel to the backing, without adhesive on the verso of the drawing. N.B. these mounting strips are visible in the frame on 2 edge of the pastel. ● The inside of the frame was dusted to remove extensive loose dust. ● A thin fillet spacer mount was made to keep the drawing spaced away from the glass to avoid any further pigment transfer. Acid-free museum board was used. ● The inside of the glass has not been cleaned, so the minimal extent offset on the glass remains in evidence.

Together with a copy of 'With Scott Before the Mast'*Notes- A 'crossing the line' ceremony is naval tradition held whenever a ship passes the equator and first time voyagers are initiated in a court held by a crew member dressed as Neptune and other crew dressed as members of his court. In this instance Neptune ('Taff' Evans) and the 'Bears' (Oates, Dr Atkinson, Patsy Kehone and Joe Ford) undertook the ceremony aboard the Terra Nova. Though Davies had crossed the line during his time in the navy he was caught out by not having a certificate of proof and was ducked along with the other initiates. The letters cover the immediate post Expedition period and First World War. In a letter dated the 16th July 1913, to 'Dear Chippie' Atkinson asks Davies 'Have you been able to do anything to the plans of hut and ship yet as I want to send in the Report to the Admiralty'. Other topics include the loss of fellow team member Harry Pennell aboard HMS Queen Mary, correspondence with other expedition members Tom Crean (1877-1938) and Cherry Garrard (1886-1959). In a letter dated 19th June ,1916 Atkinson writes 'The Committee have offered me the command of the search party for Shackleton's Relief and I had asked for Captain Pennell for the ship. I wish to god it had come off and he had been out of the Queen Mary' Together with a copy of 'With Scott Before the Mast'*Notes-Atkinson was in command of the Expedition party at Cape Evans once the Southern party had left for the pole. He was considered a trusted member of the party as Harry Pennell noted 'an out and out gentleman with the quiet self-assurance that makes a man without making him offensive" (1) However, Pennell also privately observed that Atkinson could also 'take a dislike to someone on very short acquaintance on very insufficient grounds'.(2). On the voyage south from Cardiff, Atkinson and Oates were detailed to Davies to work as carpenters when not otherwise employed on deck (3) Davies again establishing a strong friendship with his fellow crew as post expedition correspondence states. Atkinson had led the search party for Scott and his team and discovered them on the 12th November 1912, eleven miles south of 1 Ton Depot. During WWII Atkinson was approached regarding the relief party for Shackelton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-1917 that had become stranded in the Weddell Sea.References:(1) Strathie, Anne (2015). Richard Gregory. Coole near Gort", the case 33.5 x 21.4 x 2.6cm with typewritten transcript to back of the case.*Notes Thomas William Poppleton (1775-1827) was born in England and served with General Daumier's Regiment while stationed in Galway, Ireland. He transferred to the 53rd Regiment of Foot and served in the Peninsular Wars in Egypt and in Baird's Desert March to India. He then became orderly to the Governor of St. Helena, Sir Hudson Lowe and in turn to Napoleon himself when he was exiled to the island in 1815. Napoleon's captors were issued with strict supervisory orders so as not to repeat the same mistakes as Elba. In this role Poppleton became close to his prisoner out of respect for him being a fellow soldier. In 1817 Sir Hudson Lowe believed an escape attempt was imminent and ordered Poppleton to report all conversations with Napoleon or anything overheard during daily duties. Poppleton resigned his position as he did not wish to undertake the role of a spy and he transferred to the 12th Regiment of Foot. Upon his leaving St Helena, Napoleon gifted a silver snuffbox to Poppleton which was passed down through generations of the Martin family. Major Poppleton is buried in the Martin family vault at Killannin.Richard Gregory (1790-1847) built up the family estate at Coole Park, Galway and died there after caring for tenants suffering from an outbreak of the plague. The estate remained within the family until it was sold in 1927 to the Irish State by Margaret Gregory, daughter-in-law to Lady Augusta Gregory (1852-1932). The house was demolished in 1941 and the site is now a nature reserve. The Gregory Family papers (1770-1956) are held at the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library, Robert W. Woodruff Library, Emory University, Atlanta, GA. Margaret Gregory died in Exeter in 1979.The Legion Of Honour was established by Napoleon in 1802 as France's highest Order of Merit of which he was the Grand Master. The portrait 'The Emperor Napoleon in his study at the Tuileries' (1812) by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) depicts him wearing a Legion Of Honour similar to that included in the lot.Major Poppleton appears to have acquired numerous artefacts from Napoleon in addition to the silver snuff box that remained within the Martin Family in Ireland. A lock of Napoleon's hair was presented by him to Lady Georgina Bathurst (1792-1874) daughter of the 3rd Earl of Bathurst in November 1817, (Sotheby's July14th 2015, Lot 23 English Literature, History, Children's Books & Illustrations) and another to a Mrs Riely in 1821 (David Lay 5th May, 2011, lot 2447)*Provenance Acquired by the vendor's father, an antiques dealer, in the 1980s and retained within the family.

Together with a copy of 'With Scott Before the Mast'*Notes- Captain Scott notes in his diary on the 7th December, 1910, that 'First Ice' was spotted at dinner. This was to be the start of a frustrating period of twenty days for the expedition as the Terra Nova struggled to make passage through the pack ice. A summary in Scott's Diary notes that on two separate occasions, the ship stopped and fires were doused for a period of five days and four and half days. After leaving on the 26th February 1911, the Terra Nova continued her duties of surveying the region and carrying supplies back and forth.

Trained in the classical European styles, he went on to define Australian craft and design throughout the first quarter of the 20th century.Basing himself in Melbourne from 1888, Prenzel’s work was pivotal to the movement and epoch of 'Marvellous Melbourne'. In the early 1900s, he predominantly produced commissioned works for churches and public spaces in Continental, rococo and baroque styles, before opening his own furniture workshop on Toorak Road in central Melbourne in 1910. From there, Prenzel came to pioneer the secessionist movement of Australian woodcarving, known as Gum Nut Art Nouveau.Using predominantly native timbers, Prenzel produced everything from pictorial wall plaques to longcase clocks. Developing a unique artistic style, his works combined the vogue of European Art Nouveau with carved motifs of Australian flora and fauna, the majority of which were based on paintings, descriptive texts and photographs by his contemporaries. Through the use of this two-dimensional imagery, Prenzel often allowed for individual interpretations and imaginations of his subject matter, introducing minor changes and alterations to each three-dimensional rendering, giving each its unique characteristics.Prenzel’s work was phenomenally well received by his contemporaries, both in Australia and abroad. Throughout his career, he championed Australian flora and fauna, founding a botanical garden in South Melbourne and serving as an advisor on the subject to the Commonwealth government. However, his endeavours were cut short by the anti-German sentiments of the post-World War I era, eventually forcing him into retirement during the mid-1920s. In spite of this, he continued carving and working from his home in Black Rock until his death in 1941.Lot 15 shows Prenzel’s most recognised designs from the peak of his career. ‘Woman with a Pipe’ and ‘The Laughing Man’, after the original photograph by Henry King, were among his most frequent and celebrated subject matter, both as small embellishments and as standalone portrait carvings. Having been dismounted from their original backboards, these works are indicative of the intricacy and skill of Prenzel’s carvings.Condition report: Both would previously have been mounted on plaques. Both with mounting holes to the verso. The woman with a pipe possibly with a later signature. The pipe broken from the woman. Both with later hanging rings to the verso.
