A remarkable, emotive, and rare WW1 nurses’ album, compiled by Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse, Maude Alice Lineham (1883-1967). The album was carried by Maude during her time serving as a nurse at Spondon House Hospital, Derby, Derby Royal Infirmary, and the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Published records confirm that she served as a Red Cross Volunteer from November 1st 1914, through to October 1st 1917. During her time on the hospital wards, caring for wounded servicemen, it’s assumed that Maude would have passed around her book, allowing the injured men to write poems, give accounts of their service, and also profusely illustrate on the pages. Many regiments from the British Army are represented, with one Scottish solider, John J. Ferguson from the Seaforth Highlanders giving a written first hand eight page account of the famous Christmas truce, writing on Christmas Eve that ‘We started singing carols, they applauded us, they sang and we replied’. He later added that ‘We gave them three cheers (British ones) when they sang ‘God save the King’ in English. John Ferguson goes one to talk about the general mood, and famous football match played on Christmas Day, adding ‘It was like living in a different world - here we were Christmas Day in the trenches, and able to walk about with our ‘heads up, some of our men even left the trench to play football - a party from B company went over and were photographed with the Germans’. Another page, written by Sgt Richard Jones of the 1/5th Kings Liverpool Regiment has a small piece of coarse white fabric stitched to the page, and states that it is ‘A piece of a German white flag. The flag was taken from a prisoner who surrendered with 120 more, at Festubert on May 17’ 15 to the British (this would have been from the Battle of Festubert, fought between May 15th and May 25th, in the Artois region of France). Some of poems within the album clearly are odes to Maude, praising her ability as a nurse as the men were rehabilitated. The illustrations are in pencil, pen and ink, and watercolours, with the subject matter ranging from caricatures to landscapes and still life. Some of the illustrations are of high quality, clearly made by some talented artists. One charcoal head and shoulders portrait of a young lady is believed to be Maude, sketched by one of the soldiers under her care, and signed to the bottom left. A number of the illustrations and entries date to the pre-WW1 era, with these likely having been made during Maude’s teaching career. Notes: Maude Alice Lineham was born in Derby in 1883, the daughter of John Wood Lineham and Hannah Hobson. The first page of the book is written in Maude own hand, stating her name as Maude Alison Lineham, with a date of Jan 1903, and the address if Mount Pleasant, 260 Burton Road, Derby. The 1911 census clearly records her middle name as ‘Alice’ and it’s unknown as to why she records it as Alison. By the time of the 1911 census, Maude was 28 years old and still living with her parents and two siblings at the Mount Pleasant address. Her occupation in 1911 was recorded as ‘School Teacher, Private’. By November 1914 she’d volunteered as a nurse within the Voluntary Aid Detachment, under the umbrella of the Red Cross. It’s believed that Maude never married, and she passed away in Bromley, London in 1967.

The distillery was closed between 1982 and 1984, but when it reopened, it launched its first official 12-year-old single malt. Bunnahabhain's distillate is smooth, malty, and has a maritime influence due to its proximity to the coast. HIGHLAND PARK 25 YEARS OLD | Stated age: 25 years old | ABV: 48,1% | Region: Islands - Orkney | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Distillery description | Highland Park Distillery is an iconic Scottish distillery located in Kirkwall, on the Orkney Islands. Its origins date back to 1798, although the story of its founding is steeped in myth. The distillery is attributed to either Magnus Eunson, a well-known smuggler and priest, or David Robertson, a local farmer. While the exact details are debated, the distillery's official gate proudly displays 1798 as its founding year. Highland Park experienced significant growth and stability in the second half of the 19th century. Under the ownership of William Stuart, the proprietor of Miltonduff, and later James Grant, a former manager of the Glenlivet distillery, the distillery expanded and established itself as a key player in the Scotch whisky industry. In 1937, Highland Park joined Highland Distillers, which is now part of the Edrington Group, alongside brands like The Macallan. The distillery first launched its whisky as a single malt in the 1970s with an 8-year-old version. In the 1980s, it underwent a packaging redesign, introducing 12-year and 18-year expressions. Highland Park quickly gained a dedicated following, almost cult-like in nature, and its range of products continues to grow. Beyond its core line of aged whiskies, the distillery regularly releases limited editions inspired by Orkney's rich history and Norse mythology. | Bottle description | Highland Park Aged 25 Years is a single malt whisky bottled by the Highland Park distillery after a minimum of 25 years of aging in selected sherry casks made from European oak from Spain. GLENESK 1984 CONNOISSEURS CHOICE | Distilled: 1984 | Bottled: 2008 | ABV: 43% | Region: Highland | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Distillery description | Glenesk is a former Scottish distillery that was located in the Highlands region, specifically in the eastern part of Scotland, in the Angus area near the town of Montrose. It was founded in 1897 on the site of a former flax spinning mill under the name Highland Esk. Like many other distilleries, it was closed during the First World War and subsequently damaged by fire. When it reopened in 1919, it served exclusively as a malt house. Whisky production resumed only in 1938 when it became part of the Associated Scottish Distilleries group under the leadership of businessman Joseph Hobbs (see Glenury Royal, Lochside, Ben Nevis). Almost immediately, it was converted to a grain distillery, and as usual, the distillery underwent a name change, this time to Montrose. With the expansion of other grain distilleries and the increasing need for malt whisky in the 1960s, the distillery was converted back to a malt distillery in 1964, leading to yet another name change, this time to Hillside. Four years later, a large malt house was built next door, which was further expanded in 1973. For unclear reasons, the distillery was renamed again in 1980, this time to Glenesk, and operated until its closure in 1985. It was later demolished to make room for housing development. | Bottle description | Glenesk 1984 is a single malt whisky, bottled by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail as part of the Connoisseurs Choice series. It was among the first distilleries to obtain a legal license following the Excise Act of 1823, enabling it to produce whisky legally. This move faced resistance from local illegal producers, but Glenlivet quickly established itself as a model for other distilleries. Known for its exceptional spirit, Glenlivet features delightful notes of apples and malt. Its quality soon made it one of the most popular whiskies, not only in Scotland but also internationally. By the 1830s, it had gained popularity in London, particularly among the upper classes. In 1978, Glenlivet became part of the Seagram Company. When Pernod Ricard acquired Seagram's whisky portfolio in 2001, Glenlivet emerged as a key brand within the global group. JACK DANIEL'S 1954 GOLD MEDAL SERIES | ABV: 43% | Region: Tennessee | Country: USA | Type: Tennessee whiskey | Distillery description | Jack Daniel's is one of the most renowned whiskey brands globally and is synonymous with Tennessee whiskey. The distillery's history dates back to the mid-1800s when founder Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel took over the distillery at the age of 13 from Reverend Dan Call, with whom he initially learned the craft. Jack Daniel's Distillery was officially established in 1866 in Lynchburg, Tennessee, making it the first registered distillery in the United States. What sets Jack Daniel's whiskey apart from bourbon is the special filtering process known as the Lincoln County Process, which involves filtering the spirit through a thick layer of maple wood charcoal. This unique step imparts a characteristic smoothness and classifies the whiskey as Tennessee whiskey. Afterward, the whiskey matures in handcrafted oak barrels, where it develops a rich flavor profile with notes of caramel, vanilla, and wood. Today, Jack Daniel's Distillery is part of the Brown-Forman Corporation, one of the world's largest beverage companies. Paradoxically, it continues to be produced in Lynchburg, a so-called dry city where the sale of alcohol is officially prohibited. The Jack Daniel's brand has achieved cult status in popular culture, especially due to its close ties to musical genres such as rock and country. Today, it ranks among the best-selling whiskeys in the world. | Bottle description | Jack Daniel's 1954 Gold Medal Series is a special collector's edition released by the Jack Daniel's distillery to celebrate the gold medals the brand has won at international competitions.
