Bronze hilt with traces of gilding, sheath-guard wings, three loop-guards and a long cap, the pommel button engraved with a Cyrillic monogram 'SMG' below a lion and above another animal. Wooden grip covered with fish skin and metal wire binding. Iron scabbard with beautiful brass mounts, the cap decorated with foliage, the two bands with laurel stripes and the bases of the suspension rings made of iron covered with brass decorated with fret pattern. Bronze hilt with remains of gilding, oval langets, three loop-guards and a long, smooth cap. Wooden grip covered with leather and metal wire binding. Iron scabbard with two brass bands with suspension rings. On the top, inscriprions on both sides with the words 'Le corps militaire des Etudians Vaudois a Monsieur le Colonel Begos' and 'Temoignage d'estime et de reconnaissance'. See 'Souvenirs des campagne au service de France - Louis Bégos Lieutenant-colonel au deuxième régiment suisse', Infolio éditions, 2012. Book by Bégos reprinted in 1858 who was in the service of France from 1800 to 1813 and then in the service of Switzerland until 1835. dating: first quarter of the 19th Century provenance: France, Straight blade of lenticular section, with light-blue background at the forte and small engravings with racemes and trophies, with remains of gilding; completely gilt at the base. The gilding and browning at the back are partially disappeared. Hilt made of mercury-gilded bronze. Shell-guard wit ha fine sleeping lion on a shield and near a ram, an axe and a spear. The guard well-worked with floral and architectonical motifs in relief, with a lion's head at the center; linked to acanthus leaves at the pommel, featuring thunderbolts, stars and flowers and other decorations. Grip made of either ebony or lacquered wood, decorated with a checkered lozengue on both sides. Leather scabbard (small damages, signs of use and time) qith mounts featuring remains if gilding. The button of the cap shapes as a leaf. length 91,5 cm.

Beautiful iron hilt decorated with steel beads complete with chain. Scabbard (damages and missing parts) made of wood covered with reptile skin and with steel mounts. Two suspension rings ( one replaced). length 103.5 cm.

Guard with mask, pommel shaped as a face, grooved mother-of-pearl grip scales. length 96.5 cm.

dating: 1815 - 1820 circa provenance: Piedmont, Blade of triangular section with hollow faces, engraved and gilded on blue background with trophies and floral motifs at the first part. Gilded bronze beautiful scabbard (small abrasions), shell-guard with Medusa's heads in bas-relief between two winged lions and a snake in high relief under floral decorations. Quillon and loop-guard decorated with floral motifs in bas-relief, pommel shaped as a heroic helmet. Checkered horn grip grooved with staves on the corners, central trophy feauturing the Savoy's cross at the front. Wooden scabbard covered with reptile skin (small damage and missing parts) and with gilded bronze mounts engraved with rocaille. Two suspension rings. Probably the small sword belonged to a Piedmontese artillery general as shown by the Savoy's cross on the grip and the Medusa's head on the shell-guard. length 85 cm.

Elegant fire striker belonging to a member of the well-known line of armourers from Anghiaro (Italy), active from the 18th century to the first half of the 19th century. See 'Repertorio Storico degli Archibugiari Italiani', pp. 724 - 725. length plate 14,2 cm.

dating: 18th Century provenance: Central Italy, Flat lock plate with oblique borders, fine mask at the tang with bearded face in relief and decorated with dots. Baluster-shaped hammer with screw-cover shaped as a mask and jaws engraved with leaves. Racemes at the center of the plate. Another mask at the back of the batterie. Dents. The lower border featuring the signature 'UBALDO MATASSA ... A...' (unfortunately the rest is not legible). The style of this interesting lock is typical of Celalba. The signature of Ubaldo Matassi is well-known (first half of the XVIII century), The Matassi family of gunsmiths from Anghiari had a close relationship to Celalba, see 'Repertorio Storico degli Archibugiari Italiani', pg 358. See a very similar mask in 'Gli Armaioli Anghiaresi' by N. Di Carpegna, page 112.A piece which surely deserves a deeper study. length plate 14,5 cm.

dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: Papal States, Darkened-leather body with gilded metal fittings, gold-silver cockade, a decoration with a silvered lunette featuring the embossed letters 'GSP', complete with original plume-holder of white horsehair, the inside made of green-silk brocade and brown leather sweat-band. Rare sample of the first kind. A similar sample in Stibbert Museum in Florence, Italy, Boccia, 1975, nr. of cat. 776. height 35 cm.

dating: Late 16th Century provenance: Europe, Smoothbore, two-stage, 18.3 mm cal barrel, octagonal on the first segment and featuring three marks: a 'SK' surmounting an eagle, a heraldic shield and a deep circular stamp featuring a cross. The second segment of round section, with three rings at the girdle and foresight at the nozzle. The pan with turning pan cover and provided with spark arrester placed on the rear sight. Smooth tang. Lock with working mechanism. Rectangular and smooth plate featuring a stamp (TAS?), not clearly legible, the serpentine with curved base and of palmed shape, worked as a grotesque, complete with wing screw. Antique wooden stock with a crack restored in not recent time, the butt side is missing at the back and restored worm holes, the structure is still solid, decorated with double outlines. Two iron barrel brackets. Iron-tipped wooden ramrod, probably more recent. length 155,3 cm.

(not clearly legible) and with a short, faceted segment; the central short segment and the last order are round, with rings at the girdles. Sighted nozzle. Lock with flat plate featuring cusped borders, with remains of floral engravings. Pan complete with revolving pan cover. Curved serpentine, complete with wing screw. Working mechanism. Antique, wooden stock with a big butt side marked 'SBP' on one side. Some cracks and missing parts on the wood, restored segment at the muzzle yet with a solid structure. Missing ramrod. Iron trigger guard. length 159,5 cm.

Silver broad sight, gold decorations at the girdle and around the swallow-tailed foresight, remains of XXX, areas with pitting; engraved and gilded tang; very elegant Roman style lock carved with busts and silver signature 'Seb. Ces'; wooden half stock with wooden trigger guard sculpted with leaves at the edges. Silver mounts with very fine, partially pierced engravings, the lower butt-plate with a cross, an escutcheon under crown on the back. Horn-tipped, wooden ramrod and iron cartridge extractor. For Isidro Soler vedi 'Der Neue Stöckel', vol. II, pag. 1191. The signature of the lock probably belongs to an Italian gunsmith, as well as the stock. length 132 cm.

Bell-mouthed nozzle, with moulded muzzle. A snap bayonet with iron triangular blade assembled above the barrel. Sliding locking mechanism, assembled above the tang of the barrel. Lock provided with external secure lock, signature 'Richards' and 'J&W', and provided with sealed pan and big antifriction wheel. Smooth, wooden full stock. Brass mounts. Butt-plate with carved trophy, trigger guard with flower and acorn. Iron tipped, horn ramrod. For Joseph & William Richards see 'Der Neue Stoeckel', vol. 2 page 1040. With their address in Birmingham (49 New St.), where they worked together from 1799 to 1817. The page also features the same mark as the one on the gun. length 76 cm.

'Der Neue Stoeckel' states that Jones & Son (John) was a trader in London in 1825-1830, at 146 in Minories (Vol. 1 page 598). length closed 76,3 cm.

Bell-mouthed nozzle, with moulded muzzle and rings at the base. Engraved iron tang. Lock signed"GRIFFIN" decorated with frames and flowers. Well-working mechanism. Smooth wooden full stock with grip decorated with a net and small circles. Two small pieces of wood reattached. Brass mounts. Butt-plate and trigger guard with fine engravings, the latter worked as an acorn at the rear tang. Counter-plate with frames taking in the lock and with a floral engravings. Horn-tipper, light wooden ramrod with iron cartridge extractor. Stoeckel reports Jospeh Griffin from Londra between 1750 and 1787, in 1770/1 joins John Tow changing the signature: 'Griffin & Tow'. Vol. 1 page 461. length 77,3 cm.

At the end of the octagonal part a short faceted band. Bell-mouthed nozzle, with moulded muzzle and rings at the base. Engraved tang with pitting, remains of engravings and broad sight. Lock signed 'Newton', hammer provided with external secure lock. Working mechanism. Smooth wooden full stock with a shell-shaped carving around the tang of the barrel. Brass mounts. Butt-plate engraved with rocaille, the trigger guard worked as an acorn at the rear tang. Pierced counterplate. Iron ramrod. Newton is documented in Grantham, Lincolnshire, between 1781 e il 1815. dating: circa 1870 - 1880 provenance: Belgium, Smoothbore, two-stage, 8 mm cal. barrel, octagonal and with silver inlaid works at the first part, then round and with foresight; back loading system with openable central-fire gate. Finely engraved frame and mounts. The mechanism needs revision. Wooden butt checkered at the base and sculpted with floral motifs in bas-relief. Serial number 'T7xx'. length 109 cm.

dating: about 1880 provenance: Europe, Smoothbore, round, blackened, 27 mm cal. barrel; two-stage at the base, both round, the first turn-off, the second with a specular monogram under crown containing a fork with a base shaped as a truncated cone which can be turned both vertically and horizontally. The wooden butt provided with a large turn-off powder chamber with internal mechanism. Complete of two large (empty) cartridges for charging and two (empty) iron cases. Stand not included. Interesting and rare weapon, probably experimental, which seems difficult to load. In order to insert the cartridge, the butt (which has a very long threaded chamber) must be turned off. length 235 cm.

dating: first quarter of the 17th Century provenance: India Moghul, Flat, curved, single-edged blade in fantastic laddered Kirk Narduban wootz damask, made not in a traditional way but with oblique scales (much more rare), some areas with pitting. A golden cartouche in the center on the right side, with inscription in Arabic 'Shehanshah Jahangir Sunh' and date 1012. Base of the blade engraved in oblique way 'Bandah e Shah Wiltyat Esfahani', other two cartouches decorated with golden floral motifs and a third cartouche on the other side. Beautiful, iron hilt, finely decorated with floral inscriptions, inlaid in yellow gold (some parts missing). Signed under one quillon 'Sarkar Nawab Yunsen Muhammad Khan'. Important arm of a 17th-century emperor. The cartouche in the center of the blade bears the name of the famous Mughal emperor, the word Shehanshah means 'King of Kings' or 'Emperor'. The date is difficult to interpret, you can read 1261 or 1012, but only the second makes sense with everything else. The inscription at the forte refers to the city of Esfahan, famous for its blades in damask. Finally, the inscription on the hilt most likely indicates the name of the ordering party. Sarkar and Nawab are important noble titles.Beautiful arm of great historical importance. length 91.5 cm.

The first segment with brass-covered breech, the surface with remains of floral engraving and a mark, remains also of a signature (fake?), the second part with brass foresight. Tang provided with a brass-covered, slightly visible sight. Lock with thick lock plate with oblique borders and surface engraved with racemes, as well as the base of the cock. Working mechanisms. dating: first quarter of the 18th Century provenance: Spain, Straight, double-edged, undulated blade, with groove at the base featuring 'X' marks. Iron hilt with asymmetric cup finely engraved with three masks among floral motifs, carvings on the borders. Quillon worked as a snake, rectangular engraved center of crossguard, engraved and carved loop-guard. Big, hollow, oval pommel engraved and raised at the center. Spiral-shaped wooden grip with remains of leather covering and wire binding. Rare. length 103 cm.

Iron-hilted with cup consisting of six richly pierced petals (missing parts). Long, pointed center of crossguard with vertical grooves, quillons and loop-guard with curl at the end. Oval pommel with grooves. Grip with wire binding and original, wire moor's heads. length 113.5 cm.

Solid silver hilt, shell-guard with royal Spanish coat of arms among relieved floral motifs and on a granulated background. Quillon, guard and pommel decorated with floral motifs, grip with spirals. length 92 cm.

Lot 413

dating: 19th Century provenance: Europe, Straight, double-edged blade of lenticular section, with some pitting. One-piece quillon and grip. Finely silver worked in relief. Quillons shaped as the full-relieved tails of two mermaids clutched to the grip to form a sculptural group, their bodies are sinuous and worked with grace and plasticity. The central body of the grip is worked to represent the trunk of a vine, whose tendrils and grapes in high relief spread along the entire length of the stem. The pommel is formed by four lizards dormant whose tails are intertwined. The button on the back consists of a pearl; quillons ending with a blue stone cabochon similar to a turquoise. Wooden scabbard covered with black morocco (small cut on one side). Silver tip and cap both engraved with racemes, the first with a large setting of red faceted glass stone and three turquoise cabochons, the second with a loop and three red-coloured glass stones. length 20,8 cm.

dating: First half of the 19th Century provenance: Italy, Wide, straight, double-edged blade with central groove, ribbed tip, rectangular tang, the first two thirds etched with floral motifs. White metal hilt (silver?). Rectangular quillon block with short quillons, engraved at the ends with floral motifs. Big pommel shaped as lion's head. Horn, spiral grip with metallic wire binding. Leather scabbard with white metal mounts, hook engraved en suite. Scarce. length 77 cm.

dating: Second half of the 18th Century provenance: North Italy, Bronze, two-stage barrel, octagonal at the first part and finely engraved with floral motifs, moulded nozzle; tang decorated en suite. Iron lock with fine floral engravings, One screw of the lock-plate tends to slip out. Wooden full stock, slightly sculpted and with brass mounts featuring fine floral engravings on a dark background. Wooden fake ramrod. The barrel automatically opens pulling the trigger when the hammer is cocked, the match holder comes out and lightens (the match not present). Very scarce and of good quality. length 22.5 cm.
