The watch was originally developed to accompany speleologists on their cave exploration expeditions and as such was designed with extreme durability in mind. It features a bright orange luminous 24-hour triangle tipped hand providing optimum legibility even in bad lighting situations. Due to its limited commercial success and short production period, the reference 1655 is today one of the more sought after Vintage Rolex models. The current example features the highly desirably MK1 dial and early straight seconds hand. Two of the components that epitomise a perfect early Explorer II.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Rolex. A fine and rare stainless steel automatic wristwatch with gilt 4 line dial and big crownModel: Submariner '4 Line'Reference: 6538Date: Circa 1956Movement: 25-jewel Cal.1030 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions and temperatures, No.N69****Dial: Black gilt, 4 line, luminous dot hour markers, baton quarters, gilt outer minute divisions, gilt Mercedes hands with luminous inserts, centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back, inside back date coded III.56, screw down big crown, No.158***Strap/Bracelet: Brown crocodile Buckle/Clasp: Associated steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 37mmFootnotes:The Rolex Submariner 6538 was supplied for just four years but it has become one of the best known and sought after of the Submariner models. Its general defining features are the over size (8mm) crown, lack of protective crown guards and gilt dial. The gilt dial comes with gilt hands which are unusual for a stainless steel case but typical for this date. These features mean that it is instantly recognisable and since it became the adopted watch of the James Bond film character played by Sean Connery, rather famous too.One defining feature of this particular watch is that is has a chronometer rating, indicated by the four line description above 6. Printed are meters first depth indication, Submariner in a different tone to the other writing and Official Certified Chronometer split over two lines. The calibre 1030 movement was available in both normal and Chronometer versions for this reference and this is the rarer of the two. The watch therefore would have had extra scrutiny and adjustment to get it through the rigorous test to gain a chronometer certificate. It is a rare sub-category of the reference 6538. The present owners father bought this watch second hand in 1970 for £20 as he could not afford a new watch for diving. Little did he realise he was buying into the Submariner legacy and has become one of the touch points for collectors the world over. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The so-called 'inverted 6' dials were only in production for a very limited amount of time, where the Arabic marker at 6 on the 12 hour recording subsidiary dial appears to be upside down, adding to the interest of the watch. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Unveiled in 2012 to huge acclaim, the 5204P-001 was the first split-second chronograph with perpetual calendar offered by the celebrated manufacture. Originally available only in platinum, the 5204 is a real show stopper and presents a fresher, pared down look from its predecessor the 5004. Housed in a bigger 40mm case, the 5204 sees a shift in the formatting of the dial by moving the Day/Night and leap year indications from the subsidiary dials to small apertures at 4 and 7. This readdressing of the dial provides a much more legible and simpler dial visually while still communicating a lot of information. The exterior was not the only change Patek made but also what forms the beating heart of any the watch - the movement. Fitted inside the 5204 features a new and entirely in-house manually wound caliber CHR 29-535 PS. This development of a purely Patek Philippe split second perpetual calendar chronograph makes the 5204 an incredibly exciting model to have in any collection. The 5204 represents Pateks' continuing drive to seek perfection and innovation. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Limited to 100 pieces, this magnificent enamelled and engraved watch honours the second oldest watch in the manufacturer's collection. When the Ellipse was first launched in 1968, its design was hailed as a striking combination of audacity and harmony. The balanced proportions were inspired by the 'Golden Section,' the divine proportions discovered by ancient Greek mathematicians. This tribute watch's dial has a spectacular volute pattern that has been painstakingly engraved by hand on the 18K white gold plate and subsequently enamelled to produce a striking design.Having only been launched less than 2 years ago and with such a limited production run, the Golden Ellipse 50th Anniversary is something that is usually unattainable and the current lot offers an opportunity to obtain a truly beautiful watch that rarely comes to auction. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Rolex. A stainless steel automatic antimagnetic bracelet watchModel: MilgaussReference: 1019Date: Circa 1979Movement: 26-jewel Cal.1580 automatic, adjusted to 5 positions & temperatures, No.M88****Dial: Black, red Milgauss, polished baton hour markers, outer 1/2 minute markers, polished hands with luminous inserts, red arrow tipped centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and crown, soft iron antimagnetic inner cap, inside back stamped II.70, No.616****Strap/Bracelet: Brushed 78360 Oyster linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding clasp, stamped OP9Signed: Case, dial & movement Size: 37mm Accompaniments: Rolex box, outer card, International Service Guarantee, swing tag, brochureFootnotes:The Milgauss model was designed for use in areas of high electro-magnetic fields found in laboratories and electro-engineering. In particular it was Rolexs' partnership with the world renowned Nuclear research centre CERN (Centre Européen de Recherche Nucléaire) that resulted in such a technically advanced watch. Its name is derived from the Greek 'Mil' for thousand and 'Gauss', the unit to measure magnetism. A normal watch movement can withstand to 70-90 Gauss whereas the Milgauss keeps its incredibly precision in a magnetic field up to 1000 Gauss. In production from 1966 to 1990, the model was only available in stainless steel with a choice of silvered or black dial. At first glance the Milgauss 1019 can appear rather unassuming when put in comparison with its cousins in the Rolex line up. In fact, during its original production period the enthusiasm for the model was only ever lukewarm. This lower level of success translated into lower production numbers making the model rarer. For the 21st century collector, the 1019 now shines as an example of how Rolex sometimes were ahead in combining design with function. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Produced in all four metals, the reference 3970 was also the first time a perpetual calendar chronograph was cased in white gold by Patek Philippe. The 3970 can be categorised into 4 separate series, each bearing slightly different characteristics. The current lot hails from the Fourth series which ran from 1996 to 2004 when the model was discontinued. Patek Philippe. A fine 18K rose gold perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch with moon phaseReference: 5970RDate: Circa 2007Movement: 24-jewel Cal.CH27-70/155 manual wind, adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism and 8 positions, freesprung Gyromax balance, Seal of Geneva, No.3048053Dial: Silvered, applied polished baton hour markers, black outer minute track with Arabic five minute markers, further black outer tachymetre scale, subsidiary dials at 3, 6 and 9 for date, constant seconds, 30-minute recording, second time zone, leap year indication, aperture for moon phase, day/month aperture at 12, polished leaf hands with centre chronograph handCase: Brushed and polished round, screw down exhibition back, quick set buttons in the band at 6, 10 and 12, diamond set at 6, crown flanked by twin buttonsStrap/Bracelet: Fitted black Patek Philippe crocodile leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed 18K rose gold folding claspSigned: Case, dial & movementSize: 40mm Accompaniments: Patek Philippe box, outer card, spare case back, setting tool, original purchase receipt, brochuresFootnotes:The 5970 is popularly considered to be one of the most successful models in Pateks perpetual calendar chronograph journey. Fitted with the last lemania based movement before switching to in-house, the 5970 represents that balance between heritage and modernity making it very wearable for such a complicated timepiece. Hailing from one of the most illustrious lineages in modern watchmaking, the 5970 claims the 1518, 2499, 3970, 5004 and 5020 as its forebears. Compared with its predecessors, the 5970 provides the opportunity to appreciate the model for what it is with no major design amendments during its short 7 year production period. The dial and case, with limited special exceptions, came in just one configuration, something that collectors looking in search of their holy grail can find refreshing. The 5970 was also Thierry Sterns opportunity to prove himself a real creator with this his first contribution to the perpetual calendar chronograph dynasty. Without doubt he succeeded in creating a masterpiece and the influence of earlier examples can be recognised in the models success – be it the rectangular pushers of the 1518, the lessons learned with the 3970 tachymetre or the stylish lug inspiration from the Patek Philippe back catalogue. The popularity of this model warranted a much longer production period if the stars had not aligned leading to the cut-off by the Swatch group over access to their ebauches. This limitation was the catalyst for Patek to finally go full measure with their in-house calibre CH 29‑535 PS Q thus leaving behind any reliance on other manufacturers for any of their movements. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Patek Philippe. A fine and extremely rare stainless steel manual wind split second single button chronographReference: 5950ADate: Purchased 16th November 2011Movement: 27-jewel Cal.27-525 PS manual wind, adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism & 5 positions, No.525117Dial: Silvered, applied black coated white gold Breguet numerals, black outer 1/5th second and minute track, black flourishes to each corner, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for seconds and 60 minute recording, black leaf hands, black centre split second handsCase: Polished cushion form, snap on exhibition back, start/stop/reset set within crown, split second button at 2, No.4541753Strap/Bracelet: Dark brown Patek Philippe alligator leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 36mm Accompaniments: Patek Philippe box, outer card, Extract from the Archive Footnotes:When it was launched at Baselworld in 2010, the 5950A turned heads. The single-button, split second chronograph is powered by the revolutionary Calibre CHR 27-525PS. The movement, which was first used in the 5959P is, to this day, still the thinnest column-wheel chronograph calibre ever made. At just 5.35mm it is an exquisite feat of the finest watchmaking. Movements like this are the reason Patek Philippe are so revered.Despite its relatively young age, this piece is already a tried and true collector's item. The 5950A is an Application piece, meaning it was only ever made for and sold to Patek's best clients. Its limited production making it exceptionally difficult to find. The watch's distinctive design only further improves its desirability. While most complicated Pateks are fashioned from precious metals, this reference is crafted in stainless steel, a surprising, but welcome deviation from the norm. The classic raised Breguet numerals and belle epoque flourishes seamlessly compliment the modern aesthetic of the case making the watch timeless and modern. With such consistently strong numbers at auction, this model is the ultimate collector's piece. It is already cemented as one of the most impressive pieces from, arguably, the most important manufacturer. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The 44mm platinum case houses the Cal.2755 movement which features an astonishing 602 parts. At the time of production, this was the most complicated watch that Vacheron Constantin produced. The attention to detail is perfectly exemplified in the minute repeating function which includes a centripetal speed regulator that eliminates the noise interference normally experienced with a pallet system. With the 5036 Patek added a moon phase above 6, a power reserve below 12 and shifted their signature lower on the dial. Despite so much extra information being communicated on the dial it retains a well-balanced and pleasing aesthetic. The other significant change was that the model was designed with a bracelet rather than a leather strap. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Rolex. The nickname refers to the two red printed lines on the dial. The 'Sea-Dweller 2000' was one of the first production watches to employ a gas-escape valve on the band of the case, which allows the interior of a watch to decompress and avoids damage. The one way valve automatically releases built up gas from inside the case when the diver rises from the deep sea environment without which the watch would be in danger of popping the seals. Interestingly, the plexi glass covering the dial did not feature the usual cyclops magnifying the date window as it adds a pressure point which would cause a weakness. The dial variations for the Double-Red Sea-Dweller are named Mark I to Mark IV among collectors and are distinguished by small variations in the style of the red writing. The present watch has a Mark II dial. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Thirty three and a half hours later, Lindbergh landed at Le Bourget after completing the first ever non-stop solo transatlantic flight. Lindberghs aspirations for aviation were vast and in 1930 he reached out to John Heinmüller, President of the International Aviation Federation and director of Longines-Wittnauer. This relationship cemented Longines part in Aviation history and within 5 months the first prototype of 'The Longines Hour Angle' was tested and ultimately put into production. Designed by Lindbergh himself in partnership with Longines, the watch allowed for accurate determination of longitude during long-distance flights. As a result, pilots and navigators were able to find their geographic location quickly, efficiently and with great accuracy. The current lot is in great condition and bears the features that define this model. A large case, oversized knurled crown and adjustable central disc. Longines have confirmed that within their handwritten registers this watch is recorded as a 'Lindbergh type' wristwatch in stainless steel bearing the reference 3210. The model is recognizable by its lack of date feature, allowing the dial to have a well-balanced design. Early examples of the 5513 featured a glossy black dial with gilt text, and in the mid-1960's, Rolex started producing the reference with a matte dial and white printing. These dials featured the depth rating with meters indicated first '200m=660ft', and towards the end of the 1960's, Rolex began producing dials with the depth rating that indicated feet first. The matte dial reference 5513 appeals to vintage Rolex enthusiasts for its dial symmetry, durability, and place in Rolex history as inspiration for future Submariner models. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

By sinking the subsidiary dials and outer scale within the opaque black dial background, the dial achieves an unusual three-dimensionality and an instantly recognisable look. Arguably no other watch has ever captured the imagination of the collector's world in the same way that the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona has. In recent years this model in all its different incarnations has built up an almost mythical reputation. With its iconic design and the photos on Paul Newman's wrist the exotic Daytona dial truly represents the dream of watch collecting.
