ENGLISH TEACHER IN CANTON DOCUMENT ARCHIVEGood group of English and Chinese letters and documents, most with English translations in manuscript, all related to the service of John A. Summers, an English teacher posted in Canton from 1892 to 1903. These include: an autograph letter, 2pp. 4to., a letter of recommendation to the Tsung-li Yamen (Chinese Department of Foreign Affairs) stating that Summers, successor to a Mr. Budd, has completed his year's probation, and should receive a permanent post, having studied medicine and been found to be of upright character and diligence; an A.L.S. from E.B. Drew, Commissioner of Customs, 1p. 4to., Canton, Sep. 25, 1893, to Summers, confirming that the latter has been accepted as a Teacher of English at the T'ung Wen Kwan, the Chinese government's school for Western languages, at Canton, accompanied by Summers' retained A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Canton, Sep. 25, 1893, accepting the position, as well as a fragment of red envelope with Chinese characters; an A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Canton, July 6, 1901, Summers' retained copy of a request sent to the staff of his superior, the Manchu general Shou Yin (here referred to as "the Tartar General"), informing him that Summers will be visiting Japan during the summer holidays, and requesting an extra ten days leave for travelling, accompanied by the official's response in Chinese, 1p. 8vo. on red paper, with the sender's name on a second sheet, with an English translation of the same, 1p. 8vo., Canton, July 10, 1901, granting Summers' request, as well as a fragment of red envelope with Chinese characters; an autograph letter in Chinese, 1p. long 8vo. on red paper, with the sender's name on a second sheet, accompanied by an English translation, 2pp. long 4to., Canton, Dec. 29, 1901, informing Summers that he is to receive a pay increase in recognition of his efforts at the school, accompanied by the original transmittal envelope with Chinese characters, and a transmittal envelope addressed to Summers and bearing the stamp of the Canton customs house; a printed document in Chinese, 3pp. 4to., accompanied by a manuscript English translation, 2pp. 4to., Canton, June 14, 1902, a memorial sent by the Tartar general, his viceroy, two lieutenants, and his "hoppo" (collector of customs) to the emperor, requesting that Summers be awarded the Order of the Third Division, Third Class, in part: "... As first subsequent to the establishment of the T'ung Wen Kwan in Canton ... there was only one department and one foreign teacher viz. to teach English ... Now, however, since more departments viz. Russian, Japanese, and French have been opened ... our duty is to select the most deserving teacher for the conferment of distinction. It appears that J. Summers the English teacher entered the school in the 16th year of Kwang Hsu; thus having up to the present time served for ten years; he ranks first in seniority and further he has been most assiduous in the performance of his duties. It does not, therefore, seem fitting that his services should be left unnoticed..." The imperial edict granting the order is also present, in full: "The request is hereby granted. Let it be as requested. Let the Wai Wu Pu [the foreign office, which superseded the Tsung-li Yamen] give it their assention. Respect this", as well as a transmittal envelope from the Canton Customs House, stamped "On His Majesty's Service"; and a printed document in Chinese, 1p. 21 1/2" x 10, with a pencil notation by Summers in the upper right corner, giving the date as July 1903, and identifying the document as a dispatch from the Tartar general to the foreign office, asking them to renew Summers' appointment. These documents, originating from the period of xenophobia and anti-Western sentiment best exemplified by the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1901, nevertheless exemplify the good working relationship and mutual respect that existed between Chinese officials and the many Western residents of cities such as Canton who performed such vital services as teaching. Housed in a custom box of red paperboard, very good overall.

LOG OF THE SHIPS "EARL OF BALCARRAS" AND "HELEN" DURING THE FIRST OPIUM WARBound volume, approx. 128 pp. 8vo., an original handwritten log book documenting the 1840 voyage of the ship EARL OF BALCARRAS from London to Bombay (modern Mumbai) and China, kept by her chief officer, Alexander Bayne. The volume is bound in its original hard boards covered with marbled paper, and bears torn and aged paper labels on each cover. Each day, the keeper of the log records the ship's position, the prevailing conditions and direction of the wind, and records any notable weather phenomena, as well as encounters with other vessels, major maintenance of the ship, and any other interesting events. The ship puts to sea on September 25, and arrives at Bombay on May 25, 1841. Continuing on to China, the ship calls at Singapore, Hong Kong, and Manila. While at Hong Kong in July, Bayne records a devastating typhoon and its aftermath, in part: "... one of the severest typhoons ever felt in China, the whole fleet of ships driving about in all directions, some without masts which had been cut away & others flying to the shore as if they were tired of the tempest & there lodging ... on the rocks ... next morning the sight was horrible dead bodies floating about in all directions & several noble ships on shore ... had the typhoon lasted 20 minutes more we would have all been on shore..." Continuing to Whampoa, near Canton, Baynes writes: "...moored ship at the new anchorage close by the 1st bar large ships not being able to pass over on account of the Chinese having sunk Junks with stones in them in order to block the passage up so as to make themselves secure from the infuriated Barbarians as they are graciously pleased to call us ... during our stay here we remain in constant dread of the Chinese fearing that they might break their good faith with us but no such thing ... however they had plenty of troops stationed round us to see that we did the same..." These lines hint at the considerable tensions percolating between the English and the Chinese during the First Opium War, which was at its height during the Earl's visit. Upon returning to Macao, Baynes receives a promotion, and is given command of the ship HELEN in July of 1842. He continues to record his voyages between China, Singapore and Bombay, stopping abruptly in January of 1843. The volume bears the expected toning and slight foxing on the endpapers, with some wear and bumping to the covers and spine, but is in very good condition overall. Altogether an excellent record of a particular moment in history, containing more personal observations that most logs of this sort.

Good content T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Ipoh, Malaya, Sep. 23, 1940, to Hebert Welch, an American bishop, in part: "... What a terrible world we are living in! The forces of wickedness seem unending, but surely, if any right or justice exists or is expected to exist, these evil forces of nazidom must be crushed sooner or later. We have experienced all the worst effects of barbaric aggression (done with scientific precision) for over three years in China alone and unaided, and now we are forced to witness in Europe the same cruelties and widespread sufferings of innocent people. Nevertheless, I am sure you feel as I do that the evil forces will be crushed in Europe as in China, and the generation after us will be allowed to witness a happier and more charitable world. I am also glad that America so fully sympathizes with the efforts of Great Britain that it is sending plenty of airplanes, ammunition, and destroyers over to Europe to help the British cause. I wish our China had received similar help, for then we could have hit back against the enemy with greater effect..." Signed in blue ink at the conclusion, adding a post script and several ink emendations to the text. An ink inscription identifying the writer has been added in another hand at the top of the page. LOG OF THE EAST INDIA COMPANY SHIP "ROYAL CHARLOTTE" BOUND FOR CANTONBound volume, approx. 176pp. legal folio, an original handwritten log book documenting the 1802 voyage of the British East India Company ship ROYAL CHARLOTTE, carrying a shipment of lead and other materials from London to Canton (modern Guangzhou) in China. The volume is bound in brown leather boards with an embossed floral design, with the initials of the ship "R C" and the phrase "To China" burned into the front cover. The first six pages of the log, completed in the style of a standard journal, detail the outfitting of the ship at Northfleet on the Thames, from January to March of 1802. After putting to sea on March 30 in company with the East India Company ships BRUNSWICK and GLATTON, the format of the entries changes to a tabular accounting of the hourly course of the Royal Charlotte and the condition of the winds, with a space for other comments and observations. The passage to China is relatively uneventful, save for several instances in which the ship's seamen are flogged or put in irons for drunkenness, theft, and assaulting superior officers, and the loss of the topmasts in a gale, which requires her to put into the Bay of All Saints in Brazil for repairs. She arrives in Canton on September 5, where she discharges her cargo and makes necessary repairs. On October 25, the ship's fourth officer dies in the city, and is interred at French Island. She takes on a shipment of tea for the return voyage to England, and puts to sea again on November 6, with the notation: "Adieu to China for some time". During the voyage home, a passenger, the captain's steward, and the cooper's mate all die of unstated causes and are buried at sea. Again, several seamen have to be confined or flogged, including Charles Connor, who repeatedly attempts to incite mutiny amongst his fellow sailors. He is flogged several times for his behavior, but eventually proves to be such a problem that he is confined aboard the warship HMS ROMNEY when the Royal Charlotte calls at St. Helena. The ship eventually arrives at Plymouth on April 13, 1803. The British East India Company was founded in 1600, and over the next two and a half centuries came to account for over half of the world's trade. They were an important force for European colonization in Asia, and held autonomous control over much of India through private military forces. The volume bears several old accession numbers, as well as the foxing and toning one would expect from a document of this age, else very good.

Also present are the signatures of: SAMUEL WELLS WILLIAMS (1812-1884), American charge d'affaires in Beijing and a translator on Commodore Perry's voyage to Japan; JOHN E. PILLSBURY (1846-1919), sailing master aboard the squadron's flagship, USS COLORADO; EDWARD T. NICHOLS (1823-1886), chief of staff for the Asiatic Squadron; WILLIAM K. Teh, all of Peking; Two further Chinese inscriptions, identified only as "Shen" and "Tung"; and six further unidentified Chinese inscriptions. Also present is the pencil signature of Olive Risley, who may have been the owner of the autograph book from which these signatures were taken. The U.S. Korean expedition was launched ostensibly to ascertain the fate of a merchant ship, the General Sherman, but which carried a diplomatic delegation which intended to establish a treaty for the protection of shipwrecked sailors and to open the country to American trade. Korean forts fired on the American ships as they sailed up the Han River, and the American forces retaliated by capturing five forts and killing 243 Korean soldiers, including the commanding general, EO JAE-YON (1823-1871). The Americans, in turn, lost only three men. Korea would remain closed to Western trade until 1876. The pages are chipped at the left edge, where they have been removed from the autograph book, and bear slight toning at the edges, else very good.

CHINESE WORLD WAR II GAS ATTACK AND RELATED FIRST AID POSTERSIncredibly graphic set of five emergency first aid posters edited by the Zhixing Club and issued by the Xinya Book Store in Shanghai, undated but apparently ca. late 1930s. Three of the 21" x 31" color posters depict a wide variety of bandaging techniques, splints, stretchers, emergency medical kits, etc. The remaining two posters show the effects of poison gas on an unprepared populace. Images include people vomiting and clearly dying in the streets as biplanes which had dropped the gas circle overhead, skin lesions and burns caused by exposure, evacuation, a field hospital, and decontamination. These very rare posters show edge wear and soiling consistent with age, a few have minor old repairs on verso, but all remain overall very good. Shanghai was the scene of poison gas attacks by the Japanese in October, 1937 - one of only a very few such attacks occurring during the war. From a single collection obtained entirely in China pre-2000.

THE DEATH OF A MERCHANT CAPTAIN AT CANTONGood content A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., Dec. 5, 1783, from Francis Werry to John Bonus, on the subject of the death of John's relative, Captain William Bonus, who commanded the Austrian Imperial East India Company ship GRAF ZIZENDORF. In part: "... I find myself under the disagreeable necessity of conveying to you the necessary advice of Capt. Bonus's decease which event took place on the 8th November at 7 o'clock in the evening, he dying aboard the ship at Whampoa ... His illness was a dysentery, a disorder very common to this climate. He depend'd too much on the strength of his constitution, and kept it secret some time. He was ill near six weeks, but about ten days before his death, came from Canton (where he had been ever since our arrival) down to the ship at Whampoa, hoping the change of air would assist him. On board he had the advice of several surgeons, who from the first thought he could not recover. Our ship has been very sickly, have buried twelve & have a number now sick. Capt. Bonus's man Richard has by his own desire been discharged to get home in an English ship, but at present he is very ill & I fear without great care, he will not recover, he has the very same disorder as his poor master had..." Werry also discusses the dispersal of Bonus's effects, and states that his burial was "... made decent and agreeable to the rank he held..." The document bears folds, with several splits with old cello tape repairs, else very good. The Austrian East India Company was established in 1722, in direct competition with the companies established by the British, French, and Dutch governments. It was abolished in 1727 due to mounting political pressure on the emperor.

"SMASH THE WAR TREATY BETWEEN U.S. AND CHIANG KAI SHEK!"An especially fierce and graphic anti-American poster: "Smash the War Treaty Between U.S. and Chiang Kai Shek, Resolutely Liberate Taiwan!", 30 1/2" x 21", published by the North East Pictorial Publishing House and printed by the same establishment, January, 1955. Very rare first edition, first printing. The most striking image on the poster is a resolute Chinese soldier preparing to impale a an American military figure resembling Douglas MacArthur and Chiang Kai Shek just as they are about to sign a defense treaty. Eight other cartoons appear at right showing Lyndon Johnson in military uniform abusing his new ally, an American officer in lockstep with a Japanese soldier's ghost, Americans bombing China, and so on. The poster was at one time split along two folds and repaired with cello tape - it should be properly restored and is in otherwise very good condition. One of the most impressive posters we've seen. From a single collection obtained entirely in China pre-2000.

For the aficionados of the type, a great red with a Bordeaux imprint, here are many lots of extreme interest of the most prestigious wine of the entire Italian enological scene starting from the legendary ‘88 vintage to reach 2013, as many as 27 vintages of the famous wine of Castagneto Carducci. This great wine was introduced to the world in 1968, created by the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta who was the first to realize that cabernet, franc and sauvignon had found their ideal natural habitat in one small section of the Tyrrhenian coast. Among the most interesting vintages of these lots, in addition to the 1988, are the ‘90, the ‘96, the ‘97 and the ‘98, which concludes the fabulous Nineties of the 20th century. The new century begins with a good 2000, less intense than the great Sassicaias, but very elegant and aristocratic, to continue with a 2001 so powerful as to recall the great vintages of the previous years. Next is the 2004, which Daniele Cernilli describes for Gambero Rosso “the Bolgheri Sassicaia ’04 is a master stroke, one of the finest ever”. The subsequent years, until 2012, yielded very regular wines, all of great quality, with exceptional vintages in 2009 and 2011, among the best ever. (Tot. 9 bts) € 1300

Vin San Giusto 1983, San Giusto a Rentennano Chianti Etichette macchiate, colore abbastanza limpido. Stained labels, quite clear colour. Dalla collezione privata di un noto ristoratore toscano. From the private collection of famous restaurant owner from Tuscany. San Giusto a Rentennano, historic company of the Chianti Classico, was among the first to interpret the sangiovese with the highest levels of artisan standard. Every collector likes, for example, the Percarlo. Maybe not everybody knows that one of the best Italian dessert wines of Italy comes from this winery. They don’t call it Vin Santo because it has an alcohol content which is too low compared to the specification, as it’s so rich in sugars that at a certain point the fermentation stops. A unique wine with an extremely good flavour, offered in the 1983 vintage, which is considered one of the best ever in Tuscany. (6 bts 0,375 Lt.) € 100
