GLENN JOHN: (1921 - ) American Astronaut. An interesting T.L.S, John Glenn, one page, 4to, n.p, 5th July 1994, to Sally. Glenn writes in part 'To answer your question, Neil Armstrong being chosen as commander of Apollo 11 was a surprise to some. The man who made the choice, chief of astronauts Deke Slayton, cut his criteria down to one; In a life-and-death situation, who could best throw the weight of the world off his shoulders and fly the mission? He knew there were several qualified men but his gut pulled toward Armstrong...' before continuing 'Like Charles Lindbergh, Armstrong was born to fly. He first soloed in a plane at age 16; a few years later, he landed a severely disable fighter jet on an aircraft carrier during the Korean War, piloted a plane without a wing away from enemy lines, was the only future astronaut to fly the X-15 rocket planes at Edwards Air Force Base, and saved the Gemini 8 mission after he and Dave Scott spun uncontrollably in Earth orbit. He had been near death so many times that he was unflappable when the situation arose, as it very well could have on the moon...' and concluding 'Many think Armstrong had been hand-picked to be first to walk on the moon. that is not so. The choice boiled down to position with thin the lunar module; Aldrin could not manoeuvre around Armstrong to reach the hatch. The fit was too tight, and Armstrong, a commander, was stationed closer to the hatch. nothing more, nothing less.' EX
