In 1972, the Cartier Paris brand was acquired by a group of investors brought together by Joseph Kanoui and chaired by Robert Hocq. OTTO PETRI (Berlin 1860 - 1942), for Friederich Goldscheider."Young lady".Bust, Art Nouveau, Austria, 1904 .Patinated terracotta. Terracotta bust designed by Otto Petri for Goldscheider, of a young woman of fine beauty, with elegant features that denote a certain classical idealisation, although her restrained and emotive expressiveness is typical of the fin-de-siècle period. She has long hair, which she covers with a cape. It has a bronze patina, except for the face, which is of a whitish hue. On wooden corduroy lined with ochre-coloured cloth.Signed Petri, dated 904, with stamps and numbering on the reverse.Provenance: Spanish private collection, formed between 1970 and 2010.Good condition Normal wear and tear due to use and the passage of time.Measurements: 39 x 33 x 15 cm (bust); 2 x 36 x 18 cm (base). In 1885, the sculptor Friedrich Goldscheider left his native Pilsen and settled in Vienna, where he founded his own manufacture of terracotta pieces. He soon became one of the most influential artists in the fields of ceramics and bronze, with shops in Austria, Paris, Leipzig, Berlin and Florence. For more than half a century the Goldscheider firm, considered the finest modernist terracotta factory, created masterpieces of historicism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The founder was able to attract both acclaimed artists and young innovators to his factory, so that great ceramists of the time, such as W. Bosse, B. Geiger, J. Lorenzl, I. Meisinger and M. Powolny, among others, worked there. After Goldscheider's death, the factory was taken over by his widow Regina, who continued to produce her husband's models, together with new ones created by the artists who worked for the firm, such as D. Chiparus during the Art Deco period. Until its closure with the rise of National Socialism, the factory produced more than four thousand different models, both by Goldscheider himself and by other authors. From the very beginning, the factory won numerous awards, first prizes and gold medals at countless world fairs, exhibitions and trade fairs. Today its pieces are in great demand by collectors all over the world. They can now be admired in museums around the world, such as the Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. In 2007, Goldscheider's works were shown at the Vienna Museum and the following year at the LBI in New York.
GEORGES DE FEURE (Paris, 1868 - 1943).Set of two Art Nouveau armchairs and three chairs, ca. 1900.Carved and gilded wood.Measurements: 110 x 67 x 54 cm (armchairs); 92 x 44 x 46 cm (chairs).Set made up of two armchairs and three chairs, designed to match with a structure in carved and gilded wood, with sinuous and stylised lines that are a nod to rococo. In fact, this language bears numerous similarities to Art Nouveau, given that, like Art Nouveau, it is an anti-classical style that seeks naturalism, movement and formal delicacy. Thus, we see seats with a light structure and flowing lines, although clearly Art Nouveau in their sinuosity and forms. Both the chairs and the armchairs stand on eminently straight legs, softened by curved lines that start from carved mouldings and unify the shape of the leg with that of the waist, seeking a unitary appearance, almost organic in character. The backrests are open, with a central paddle in the lower part, and have upholstered upholstery at the top. The top of the backrest is in the shape of a lowered "u", with a smooth, moulded profile, matching the rest of the structure. The lower panel is openwork, with flamboyant shapes that evoke the organic, the living, without being specific, which is typical of Art Nouveau. The armchairs have closed sides, with upholstered upholstery like the backrest and seat. The arm cross is slightly recessed from the waist, in the rococo manner, and is intricately carved with soft, flowing lines.Georges Joseph van Sluÿters, better known by his artistic name Georges de Feure, was the son of an influential Dutch architect living in Paris. He began his training in the book trade in The Hague, where he came into contact with Symbolism. In 1886, de Feure was one of eleven students admitted to the Rijkscademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, although he soon dropped out after deciding that traditional academic training had nothing to offer him. Back in Paris in the late 1880s, he settled in Montmartre, where he frequented the Parisian bohemian life. In 1890 he became a pupil of Jules Cheret, and began to design posters for the Salon Des Cent, Loie Fuller and Thermes Liegois. During the early years of his career he acquired renown as a Symbolist painter, and Puvis de Chavannes considered him one of the most important painters of that movement. In the following decade he was also recognised as a talented poster painter and illustrated books such as Marcel Schwob's "La Porte des Réves" (1899). De Feure exhibited his paintings at the Societé Nationale in 1894, at the Salon de la Rose Croix in 1893 and 1894, and at the Munich Secession in 1896. He was also interested in design, in everything that made up the decoration of a house; he created designs for printed fabrics, porcelain, stained glass... In the 1890s he was appointed professor of decorative arts at the École des Beaux-Arts. His first commissions were illustrations and set designs, until he was finally discovered by one of the greatest art dealers in Paris at the time, Siegfried Bing. Bing became interested in him after seeing many of his paintings at the Paris Salons, as well as his illustrations in Paris newspapers and his posters. Thus in the 1890s de Feure began to abandon painting and printmaking in favour of design and the decorative arts, and as early as the 1894 Salon National des Beaux-Arts he exhibited designs for furniture and ceramics. In fact, it was around this time that he began to be known as a creator of refined and exquisite furniture for the wealthier classes. De Feure soon became one of Bing's most important designers, and Bing encouraged him to extend his talents to all areas of art and design. Although they never signed an exclusive contract, de Feure would work primarily for the art dealer, and
Turkish kilim, first half of the 19th century.Hand-knotted wool.Measurements: 148 x 397 cm.This carpet comes from the Barcelona residence of the Sultan of Morocco, S.A.I. Muley Hafid, a tower-palace that he had built in calle LLeó XIII nº 15, between 1915 and 1920, which is still preserved today. There is an article published in the Vanguardia de Barcelona by Lluis Permanyer, chronicler and historian of Barcelona, entitled "The Moorish friend Muley Hafid", which tells the story of this character in relation to the years he lived in the city of Barcelona, where he was much loved and idolised by adults and children alike, above all for his great generosity towards the city and its inhabitants.Kilim is a word of Turkish origin, these rugs have been woven throughout the ages in the geographical area that includes parts of the region of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China. Kilims are flat-woven, knotless rugs woven by passing the weft threads through the warp threads, a particularity that determines their design. Geometric motifs are the most common, mainly diagonal slanted lines that form inverted rhombuses and triangles that are distributed throughout the piece, either creating a border or following a more or less symmetrical pattern that covers the entire background of the carpet. But like the motifs, it is the colours that give life to this kilim, most frequently reds, blues, tans and tans......This carpet comes from the Barcelona residence of the Sultan of Morocco, S.A.I. Glazed ceramic dish, Du Paquier, ca. 1735.Glazed ceramic.Measurements: 37 cm in diameter.Glazed ceramic dish decorated with polychrome flowers on a white background and vegetal and geometric ornamentation around the perimeter of the dish. Original piece by Du Paquier, from the first half of the 18th century. Du Paquier was the first porcelain manufactory in Vienna, founded in 1718 by Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier. In 1744 it came into the possession of the imperial family and many of its pieces are on display in the Porzellanmuseum im Augarten in Vienna.
Clock; Genoese work, first quarter of the 18th century.Ebonised wood and bronze applications. It has French Jean Vaillaus machinery.Precise set up.Measurements: 70 x 46 x 17 cm.Table clock made of ebonised wood with a design based on an architectural structure. The piece is supported on eight gilded bronze chamfered ball legs, which give way to a moulded base with incoming and outgoing edges. This area is notable for the gilt-bronze appliqués that represent small cartouches, with the one in the centre standing out. The rectangular body is located in the upper area, flanked by two warped finials topped by pinnacles. The central area has a hinged door with glass, which allows a view of the inside of the piece where the clock face is located. Ornamented with reserved areas in the corners where a vegetal pattern can be seen, the centre is dominated by a dial in which black contrasts with gold, on which the Roman numerals are arranged. Finally, the piece ends with an upper cornice and a tympanum in the form of a split arch with a large crest.
Andalusian school, probably from Cordoba. First half of the 18th century."Saint Raphael the ArchangelCarving in alabaster, with polychromy.Measurements: 39 x 9 x 7 cm (figure): 11 x 14,5 x 14,5 cm (base). This sculpture represents Saint Raphael, the healing archangel. Devoid of the attributes that usually characterise him (a fishing rod or a pilgrim's staff), he is nevertheless fully identifiable here by the legend engraved on the shield. The archangel holds the shield with his left hand, while his right hand is held to his chest. His winged figure is distinguished by the delicacy of his face, with its childlike features. His hair is done up strand by strand and the cloak that envelops him is draped in deep folds. Saint Raphael the Archangel is one of the seven archangels who stands before the throne of God. He is known as the healing archangel because of his divine intervention with the character Tobit, whom he healed of blindness. The idealisation of the features and the dynamic impression of the drapery are features that could indicate a late Baroque origin from a Cordovan workshop.
After MARCEL BREUER (Hungary, 1902 - United States, 1981).Pair of "Wassily" armchairs, 1960s-70s.Steel and black leather.Good general state of preservation.Measurements: 73 x 78 x 66 cm.Following models by Marcel Breuer. Large armchair with a light, sober and functional structure, based on chromed steel tubes that intertwine to support the upholstered elements (seat, backrest and armrests).Marcel Breuer was a Hungarian architect and designer, one of the main masters of the Modern Movement, who was very interested in modular construction and simple forms. He studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar at the time when it was directed by Walter Gropius, and later took charge of the furniture workshop there. There he designed the B3 chair, later known as the Wassily chair, made in 1925, the first tubular steel chair in history, which combined the flexible conditions of this material with its ease of large-scale industrial production. Breuer remained at the Bauhaus until 1928, when he settled in Berlin to devote himself to architecture. However, with the rise of Nazism he had to leave Germany, owing to his Jewish origin, and moved first to England in 1933 and later to the United States, where he lived for the rest of his life from 1937 onwards. Today his furniture designs form part of the most important collections in the world, including the MoMA in New York and the Victoria & Albert in London.
EUSEBI ARNAU MASCORT (Barcelona, 1864 - 1933).Modernist chimney breast.Polychrome stucco.Provenance: Josep Puig i Cadafalch's house, Carrer Provença in Barcelona.Measurements: 110 x 24 x 30 cm.May form a set with lot 35047519.Lateral finial made by Eusebi Arnau for the Barcelona house of the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch (1867-1956). It is a vertical relief with a flat base, entirely covered with figures worked in various levels of relief, some of them even approaching the round figure. It is a representation of a group of nymphs and fauns, embracing and playing, their bodies confused by Arnau's soft modernist forms. The sculptor Eusebi Arnau trained at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and was a disciple of José Gamot. From 1887 he continued his studies in Rome, thanks to a scholarship from the La Lonja School. He later furthered his training at the Académie Julian in Paris, exhibiting his works at the Salon in the French capital in 1895 and 1902. He later opened his own studio in Barcelona, where he had pupils such as Pablo Gargallo and Josep Dunyach. Arnau carried out numerous commissions, such as the altarpiece for the basilica church of Santa Engracia in Saragossa, where he worked with Josep Llimona. On the other hand, his sculptures applied to architecture made him stand out as a modernist sculptor. Some examples are those made for the Lleó Morera and Amatller houses, the Hotel España, the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Hospital de Sant Pau, all in Barcelona. He was also a regular collaborator of the architect Enric Sagnier Villavecchia, with whom he worked on the Customs building at the Port of Barcelona, the Casa Ruper Garriga, the Via Crucis of Montserrat, the Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart, the parish church of the Sacred Heart in Poblenou, the Caixa de Pensions agency in Reus and other projects. He also excelled as a medallist, producing, among others, the medal for the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exhibition, the Catalan Solidarity medal, the Columbus Centenary medal and the medal commemorating the demolition of Barcelona's city walls. Throughout his life, Arnau took part in numerous exhibitions both in Spain and in Chicago, Mexico City and Paris. He was awarded a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1888, an honorary diploma at the Fine Arts Exhibition in the same city in 1891, and a prize at the 1896 Exhibition; an honourable mention for sculpture at the National Exhibition in Madrid in 1899, a first-class medal for decorative arts at the National Exhibition in 1908, a gold medal from the Artistic Circle of Barcelona at the International Art Exhibition in 1911, and a third-class medal at the National Exhibition in 1912. Today we can find public monuments by Arnau in Barcelona, Madrid and Villafranca, and other works by him in Barcelona, Comillas and Zaragoza. He is also represented in the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

LOUIS MAJORELLE (France, 1859 - 1926).Auxiliary display cabinet, circa 1900.Rosewood and various fruit woods.Signed "Majorelle, Nancy" on the top hinged lid.It has a plaque of the Barcelona house "G.Cuspinera".Measurements: 147 x 64 x 38 cm.Open-structured cabinet-vitrine, in rosewood combined with marquetry in fruit wood. Raised on an enclosed base with a geometric cut-out skirt, it consists of a closed cupboard with a marquetry door, together with vertical compartments in the lower register. This door concentrates the decoration of the cabinet, together with the upper hinged lid, with a natural landscape worked with classic marquetry. This technique consists of individually cutting and inlaying pieces of different woods to form a specific design, in this case a natural scene with a clear Japanese influence, very typical of French Art Nouveau. The central body, which opens like a niche, has finely turned balusters on the side. The upper part houses a closed display case with a slanted lid combining glass and wood decorated with floral marquetry.A cabinetmaker and designer who was a member of the Ecole de Nancy, of which he was even vice-president, Louis Majorelle was the son of a furniture designer and manufacturer based in the town of Toul, from where he moved to Nancy with his family. Majorelle received his first artistic training there and then went to Paris in 1877, where he studied for two years at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, where his teacher was Jean-François Millet. However, the death of his father forced him to return to Nancy to run the family earthenware and furniture factory, a task he would combine with his artistic practice for the rest of his life. In the 1980s and until the early 1990s, Majorelle produced Louis XV-style furniture in the family firm, which he took to the 1894 Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts in Nancy. There, however, he was able to see at first hand the works of Émile Gallé, whose influence would determine a radical change in Majorelle's production. From then on, his work was characterised by the use of naturalistic elements in his forms and marquetry. From the nineteen-nineties onwards, his furniture became fully Art Nouveau, with intertwined forms and a clear direct inspiration from nature, with motifs such as plants, water lilies, the typical Nancy thistle and the dragonfly, an icon of French modernism. In 1900, he went a step further and set up a forge workshop in his factory, in order to be able to make iron fittings in accordance with his designs. Over time, this became more important and he was responsible for the handrails on staircases and the exterior details of many buildings in Nancy. That same year, 1900, Majorelle was a great success at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, which encouraged him to start mass production, enabling him to rapidly expand his catalogue. He also collaborated frequently with one of Nancy's great art glass firms, that of the Daum brothers, and in 1901 he was one of the founding members of the Nancy School, led by Gallé. His success was dazzling, and by 1910 Majorelle had furniture shops in Paris, Lyon and Lille as well as Nancy. Today his works can be found in prominent collections such as the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the MoMA in New York, the Walters in Baltimore, the Texas College of Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and many others.
Map of the coasts of Spain and France, 18th century.Colour engraving.Engraver: Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (Paris, 1703-Versailles, 1772).It presents light humidity and dirt stains, wrinkles and folds.Size: 26 x 30 cm (map); 33 x 50.5 cm (passpartout).Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a French geographer and cartographer. In 1721, at the age of 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) of the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Deposit of maps and plans of the Navy (the French hydrographic office) and was appointed hydrographic officer to the King of France.
CLAUDIO DE LORENA (Lorraine, France, 1600 - Rome, Papal States, 1686)."Mercury and Argos", 18th century.Etching on paper. It has damp stains, folds, creases, dirt and some tears.Size: 16.5 x 22.5 cm; 31 x 39 cm (passe-partout).Claude Lorrain's style had many followers over the centuries. The present painting is a copy of one of his masterpieces in the Uffizi Gallery, "Port with Villa Medici", 1637. Lorrain was an important French landscape painter who worked in Italy. Born Claude Gellée, he took his artistic surname from his hometown of Lorraine in north-eastern France. His first apprenticeship in painting probably took place in Naples with the German landscape painter Godfrey Waals. In 1625, while in Rome, he came under the protection of Agostino Tassi (1578-1644), a landscape painter. After this period he travelled extensively in Italy, France and Germany, and returned to work in Lorraine. In 1627, he received the patronage of Cardinal Bentivoglio (1579-1644) and Pope Urban VIII (1568-1644). With these early works, Lorrain made a reputation as a talented landscape painter, who fully understood all the effects of light and the laws of nature.
JOAN BROTAT VILANOVA (Barcelona, 1923 - 1990).Untitled.Set of three serigraphs on paper.Edition of 25 copies.Signed and justified.Slight damp stains.Measurements: 38 x 41 cm (total of the largest).Joan Brotat studied at the School of Arts and Crafts and at the Ateneo Obrero in Barcelona. He held his first exhibition on the initiative of Ángel Marsà, who invited him to take part in his Cycle of Experimental Art in 1950. That same year he made his individual debut at the El Jardín gallery in Barcelona. From then on his work could be seen frequently at the Salones de Mayo and Octubre in Barcelona, and finally he made the international leap, holding more than a hundred exhibitions all over the world. After an initial period characterised by a modernist-influenced language and conventional subject matter, his style evolved towards a primitivism that made him very famous. Brotat adopted the viewpoint of the old Catalan Romanesque painters to the narration of contemporary life, bringing an apparent naivety to his compositions that earned him notable success. During these years he also experimented with informalism, collage and gestural art within the Dau al Set group. In the 1960s, when he returned to figurative art, his style became consolidated, characterised by figures with large, melancholic faces, the application of colours in flat patches and the absence of perspective in his compositions. His awards include the Grand Prize of the Mediterranean Countries of Alexandria (1961), the Rafael Zabaleta gold medal and the City of Tarrasa Prize, among others. Brotat is represented at the CDAN of the Beulas Foundation in Huesca, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao, the Museums of Modern Art in Madrid and Alexandria and the Municipal Museum in Valls.
Gaudinian lamp, ca. 1910.Gilt bronze. With wear and tear typical of the period.Measurements: 95 x 70 cm (diameter).A lamp that follows the characteristics of Catalan modernism, specifically those established by the personality of Antonio Gaudí (Reus or Riudoms, Tarragona, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926), such as the soft, naturalistic forms that made the master from Reus the greatest exponent of Catalan and, therefore, Spanish modernism. As is usual in the purest modernism, the structure is not only hidden by the decoration, but is directly replaced by it: sculptures of dragons form the arms of the lamp and support the candlesticks. The piece culminates in the heraldic motif of the double-headed eagle and the coat of arms of Castile and León.The greatest representative of Catalan modernism, Gaudí is one of the most outstanding architects and decorators in European history. Even as a child he loved hiking and direct contact with nature. Having stood out as a child for his drawings, he studied architecture at the Llotja School and at the Barcelona School of Architecture, where he graduated in 1878. With his first major commission, the Casa Vicens, Gaudí began to make a name for himself and to attract increasingly important commissions. In 1878 he exhibited a showcase for the Comella glove shop at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. This piece, which was both modernist in design and functional, impressed the industrialist Eusebi Güell, a key figure in Gaudí's artistic biography from then on. In fact, Güell was not only Gaudí's great friend, but also his main patron, and commissioned some of his most outstanding works, such as the Parc Güell. In 1883 he accepted the commission to continue the work on the Sagrada Família; Gaudí completely modified the initial project, and this building became his masterpiece, on which he worked until the day he died. This project was followed by other important commissions, such as the episcopal palace of Astorga, the Batlló and Milá houses and the restoration of the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca. In 1910 the first exhibition dedicated to Gaudí was held at the Grand Palais in Paris. After his death, important retrospectives of the architect were held, including the one at the MOMA in New York, his first major international exhibition, which took place in 1957. Since the mid-20th century, Gaudí has been increasingly appreciated, culminating in the proclamation of several of his works as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1984 (Park Güell, Güell Palace and Casa Milá) and 2005 (crypt and apse of the Sagrada Familia, the Vicens and Batlló houses and the crypt of the Colonia Güell). Gaudí's designs for furniture and decorative arts can now be admired in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the MOMA in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, as well as in his House-Museum in Parc Güell.
Pair of vases from the MEISSEN MANUFACTURE. Germany, 19th century.Enamelled porcelain. With mark.Measurements: 76 x 30 cm.Pair of vases in rococo style, made in the Manufacture of Meissen in the 19th century following the models of the previous century, although approached from a more ornamental and fantastic point of view, already clearly nineteenth century. The basic rules of full rococo are respected: The structure is practically hidden by the decoration in relief, of great bulk; profiles of sinuous lines, general asymmetry and also in the details, absolute naturalism in the decoration and floral theme combined with the figures of children, very typical of European production from the 18th century onwards. Thus, the design is directly inspired by the natural world, with a predominance of flowers modelled by hand and applied separately, whose realism almost deceives the eye. We also see rockery crests, naturalistic scallops, far removed from the classical shell, all kinds of leaves and stems and, at the base, children playing, drinking and picking flowers. The Meissen Manufactory was the first European factory to produce genuine porcelain. The manufacture was started by the scientist Ehrenfried Walther von Tchirnhaus in 1708, and after his untimely death his work was continued by Joahnn Friedrich Bóttges, who remained virtually imprisoned on the factory premises in order to protect the secret of the porcelain formula. Meissen porcelain production began in 1710, a year after the factory was founded by Augustus the Strong, and soon achieved great fame throughout Europe. In order to prevent forgeries, he introduced his famous mark, two crossed swords, in 1720, making his one of the oldest pottery marks in existence (it still remains on the wares of Meissen's heir firm, the Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktúr Meissen GMBHB). Initially, Meissen's production imitated oriental production, especially Japanese kakiemon ("indianische Blumen"), although enamelled pieces with landscape, floral and gallant themes were also produced, the latter derived from the paintings of the French artist Antoine Watteau. However, in 1717 a former Meissen worker, Samuel Stáltzel, sold the secret of porcelain to a manufactory in Vienna, and by 1760 there were about thirty manufacturers of genuine porcelain in Europe. However, most of these manufactories produced soft-paste porcelain, due to the difficulty of accessing kaolin, the basic ingredient of authentic (hard-paste) porcelain. After an initial production of rococo style, which evolved towards neoclassical in the 1750s, in the 19th century we witnessed a new style known as "second rococo", inspired by the first productions of Meissen, which coexisted with other historicisms, among them the sculpture in rounded bulk, mainly in enamelled porcelain, following models of both rococo and neoclassical.
FRANCESC VIDAL JEVELLÍ (Barcelona, 1848 - 1914)."Fish".Bronze dish with cloisonné enamel. It shows losses and damage. Needs restoration.Measurements: 37 cm (total diameter).Francesc Vidal was one of the most outstanding decorative artists in the city of Barcelona at the end of the 19th century, for being one of the first professionals to promote craftsmanship in the heart of the nascent Catalan aestheticism and modernism. One of the key events in understanding his personality and his innovative character was his stay at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867, where he travelled to direct the exhibition of his father's bookbinding samples. In addition to witnessing the birth of Japonisme in the French capital, Vidal made contact with other young artists and stayed in the city to study at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs, where his teacher was Louvrier de Lajolais. From Paris he also made a series of trips around Europe that enabled him to become acquainted with the artistic practices that were being promoted in the great capitals of the continent. He finally returned to Barcelona with the desire to modernise and Europeanise a city that was still too tied to tradition, introducing novelties such as the Japanese influence in interior decoration and the decorative arts. In 1878 he established himself as an art dealer, and in 1883 he inaugurated a building designed by Vilaseca, an unusual polytechnic complex, where he would work intensively from then on in the production of quality furniture, as well as glassware, metalwork and foundry complements. Rigalt and Masriera collaborated in his studio in the foundry, and Joan González, Gaspar Homar and Santiago Marco worked as designers. Vidal's clientele included the gentry and official corporations, and he made the furniture designed by Gaudí for the Güell Palace. He was also responsible for other important projects such as the decoration of Mayor Rius i Taulet, several rooms in the Círculo del Liceo and also royal commissions such as the bedrooms in the Royal Palace in Madrid and the cradle for the future Alfonso XIII. In fact, his works were in demand not only on the Peninsula, but also in America, which led Vidal to expand his business by forming a partnership with Frederic Masriera Manovens, and later to open shops in Madrid and Paris. Works by Francesc Vidal are currently housed in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and the Museu Nacional d'Arts Deco.
Jasper Ware ornamental ceiling lamp by ETRURIA; England, 19th century.Biscuit porcelain.Size: 43,5 x 38 x 7 cm.Two-coloured biscuit porcelain soffit, with the figure in high relief of the goddess Diana, seated on a lunar crescent and accompanied by an angel, in white on a blue-grey background, typical of Wedgwood's Jasper Ware. The Etruria pottery manufactory, better known as Wedgwood, was the great neo-classical factory in England, and one of the most important of this period in Europe. It was founded by Josiah Wedgwood in 1765, and came to compete with Sèvres, even influencing the production of the great French factory. It had three main productions: Queen's Ware (cream-coloured earthenware), Basalt (black stoneware) and Jasper Ware (stoneware or biscuit porcelain), to which this panel belongs. Jasper Ware began to be produced in 1774, and are pieces inspired by the classical world, made in porcelain or biscuit stoneware imitating ancient Roman and Hellenistic cameos. As time went on, Jasper Ware would adapt to new tastes and Wedgwood would produce Romantic and Art Nouveau pieces. The first Jasper Ware pieces, made between 1774 and 1780, were made by staining the white porcelain or stoneware mass and then, after drying but before firing, applying decorative motifs moulded in white porcelain or stoneware. Finally the piece was fired, with a single firing for the base and decoration. From 1780 onwards, a second, quicker and cheaper technique was used, consisting of making the piece in white with relief decoration, in a single mould, and after drying the paste, painting the desired surface in colour, leaving the rest in white, and finally firing the piece (again, a single firing). In both techniques the result is a biscuit piece, without glaze.
Art Nouveau mirror, possibly from the GOLDSCHEIDER factory. Vienna, circa 1900.Art Nouveau mirror.Polychrome terracotta.Illegible signature in the lower left corner. With marks on one sideMeasurements: 57 x 79 cm.Mirror belonging to the Viennese Jugendstil. The terracotta soffit is decorated with a nymph who looks at the moon of the mirror as if she wanted to contemplate herself as a rapt narcissus. Next to her bare feet, caressed by the grass, we see a pond with water lilies. The Austrian ceramics and porcelain firm Goldscheider was founded in 1885 by the Bohemian sculptor Friedrich Goldscheider. For more than half a century the company created masterpieces of historicism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
EMMANUEL FONTAINE (Commercy, France, 1856-1935)"Soldier".Bronze sculpture.Signed E. Fontaine.Size: 67 x 36 x 27 cm (with base).Emmanuel Fontaine, is a French sculptor.Active in the Montparnasse district, he was a pupil of François Jouffroy, Alexandre Falguière, Antonin Mercié and Louis Noël at the École des beaux-arts de Paris. He exhibited medallions and busts at the Paris Salon from 1877 to 1882. His sculptures received different mentions over the years, the most important being: an honourable mention in 1887, a third class medal in 1893, a second class medal in 1896, a silver medal in 1900, and a first class medal in 1904.He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1910 and was classified out of competition in 1922.The bronze statue of his Monument to Jacques Boucher de Perthes, erected in the Place du Pilori in Abbeville in 1907 and unveiled in June 1908, was demolished by the German occupiers during the Second World War.Prisca Hazebrouck preserves in the work The Reclining Lovers, a bronze burial located in the cemetery of the Abbeville Chapel ("the most astonishing monument in the cemetery") and representing "lovers holding hands", side by side, drawn by Emmanuel Fontaine with expressive and peaceful features: "A barely sketched smile hovers on the lips of the young woman who turns her head slightly towards her husband". If it is established that the concession was bought in 1866 by the Abbevillois Adolphe Masse, the total absence of any mention of the burial for this site, the absence of any inscription on the burial, make it a monument where beauty is allied with mystery.
