* ISHBEL MCWHIRTER RCA (BRITISH b 1927 -), AWAY IN A DREAM watercolour on paper, signed and dated 81cm x 55cm Mounted, framed and under glass Note: Born London in 1927 to a Scottish father and a Welsh mother, and a descendant of the Bard Hedd Wyn, Ishbel McWhirter was brought up in north Wales. She boarded and studied at A.S.Neill’s Summerhill School, resulting in her first solo show in London's Bond Street aged 18. Invited by the great Austrian artist Oskar Kokoschka to become his pupil, which continued for 7 years. Kokoshka wrote in 1945, " I see my pupil Ishbel McWhirter moved by curiosity...she pictures her heroines with a serene remoteness, lovely restraint, and the strangeness of the designers of the white funeral vases of ancient Greece ." Kokoshka encouraged her ‘lively un-English palette’ which has resulted in her vibrant watercolours and oils, often of the Menai Strait. Of her portraits, Kokoshka stated it appeared the colour came through the skin rather than being applied by a brush. She is best known for her portraits which include: Melvyn Bragg, Sir Kyffin Williams, Barbara Hepworth, Tilda Swinton, Nelson Mandela and Lord Scarman. In 1990 in honour of her time with Kokoschka she was invited to hold an exhibition at his birthplace near Vienna. Collections include: National Portrait Gallery, London; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh; National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth and Oriel Mon, Llangefni.

A collection of prints of the Napoleonic period including: Baines, Edward (publisher) c.20 engraved maps, scenes and portraits from his History of the Wars of the French Revolution published between 1814-1817, some framed, various sizes. Baines (1774-1848) was proprietor of the Leeds Mercury and a determined political commentator, whom William Cobbett called 'the Great Liar of the North'. His History was initially offered in parts, starting in 1814. It would be unlikely many would have anticipated the dramatic return of l'Empereur, making this work one of the first contemporary histories of the war - having not actually finished yet. This discrepancy of dates (some plates before the return, some during the final year, and some from the immediate period after) makes the subjects especially interesting. One of the 1814 plates is a map of the French Empire, showing the heights reached, where one of the latest (1817) is Napoleon's final surrender on Bellerophon. Boussod, Valadon & Cie. (publishers) 5 coloured lithographs, framed, various sizes, late 19thc (post 1884 when Groupil & Cie became Boussod, Valadon & Cie). The publishers were major art dealers in late-19th century Paris. Their core business was the creation and sale of reproductions such as these, but they also sold original works by artists such as Bouguereau, Monet and Corot. The firm played a part in the story of Van Gogh as his uncle Vincent was a partner from 1861 till retirement in 1872, and his cousin Theo joined the firm in 1873. Van Gogh himself worked for them for 6 years in their offices in The Hague, London and Paris until they dismissed him after an unauthorised Christmass absence. With 2 other framed, coloured Napoleonic prints and some others. [Qty]

Collection: Livingston Ludlow Biddle [USA, 1877 - 1959]. The glamorous steam and sailing yacht Alcedo was built in Glasgow Scotland in 1895. She was 300 foot long and required 100 crew to operate. A pottery lekythos made in the Apulian, South Italian region. It is decorated with a white geometric net pattern. The body is decorated with a net-pattern of white crosshatching on a reserved ground. There is a wave-pattern around the shoulder. There are rays on the upper neck. The decoration is clearly inspired by vases of the Attic Bulas group of the end of the fifth and the first half of the fourth centuries. Bodies decorated with black net-patterns highlighted with white dots are extremely common, and even an occasional wave-pattern turns up which this example has. The lekythos was used for storing oils, such as olive oil. A small example like this could have stored perfumed oil or was left as a grave good. Complete and intact. Some surface loss on side. Ex. Private collection, Michael Green, Devon. 140mm.

Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II Temple Foundation Brick, 605-562 BC A baked clay rectangular brick with thirteen columns of cuneiform text mentioning the foundation of a temple by Nebuchadnezzar II. 19cm. Nebuchadnezzar II (from the Akkadian meaning "O god Nabu, preserve/defend my firstborn son") was king of Babylon from 605 BC to 562 BC, the longest and most powerful reign of any monarch in the Neo-Babylonian empire. Nebuchadnezzar was the eldest son and successor of Nabopolassar, an Assyrian official who rebelled and established himself as king of Babylon in 620 BC; the dynasty he established ruled until 539 BC, when the Neo-Babylonian Empire was conquered by Cyrus the Great. Nebuchadnezzar is first mentioned in 607 BC, during the destruction of Babylon's arch-enemy Assyria, at which point he was already crown prince. In 605 BC he and his ally Cyaxares, ruler of the Medes and Persians, led an army against the Assyrians and Egyptians, who were then occupying Syria, and in the ensuing Battle of Carchemish Necho II was defeated and Syria and Phoenicia were brought under the control of Babylon.
