A quantity of ancient pottery vessels, first Millennium BC, some with tickets attached These items are from the collection of Lionel Walrond.  Lionel was born in 1927, his parents were tenant farmers on a small dairy farm in Somerset. Sadly, both parents died before Lionel's 4th birthday and he was brought up by aunties and an uncle in Pitney, Somerset.  On leaving school he was not drawn to a life in farming but became interested in history and archaeology.  This interest lead to the discovery of three Roman mosaics in South Somerset before his 18th birthday!  The most famous is the Low Ham Villa (the mosaic has pride of place in the Museum of Somerset).  Lionel fervently collected local historical artefacts and set up his own museum on the farm in a converted WWII American Army Nissan hut.  Local finds of Roman and neolithic origin were displayed alongside agricultural bygones.  Lionel moved to Stroud in 1955 to take up the post of curator at the LansdownMuseum, a post which he held for the following 37 years.  He was a member of a number of local and national historical societies and was an elected fellow of the Museum Association.

Walter Battiss (South African 1906 - 1982) EARTHLY DELIGHTsigned and dated 14.12.81white ink on paper70 by 99cmResonant of the artist's 'Orgy Works', Walter Battiss's Earthly Delights depicts a whirl of humanity in white ink on black paper. From afar, the work gives the impression of a map of space, or a photograph of the Milky Way. However, as the viewer moves in closer, the details of the self-contained, intertwined figures and marks are revealed. These figures represent Battiss's concepts of ideal existence, engaged in age old pursuits of dancing, drinking and eating. These figures are represented with a splendid calm, yet a vivid sense of excitement, where human existence and nature meet. There is a subtle sense of implicit voyeurism in Battiss's work, as the artist presents something that interests the viewer at first glance, but also forces the viewer to look at the finer details and step into the work; to be immediately immersed by nude figures, at their most vulnerable state. However, rather than presenting as erotica, the figures are to a large extent naïve.Even the unformed abstract 'squiggles' have been humanised, and characteristic of the artist's works, there is animism in every stroke applied. The artist's line language is entirely his own and is a recognised element picked up from his life-long fascination with African rock paintings and their rhythmic storytelling qualities. Battiss's emphasis on genitalia and human anatomy was not only a playful fascination with a generation of free-love, without cynicism, but was also a political gesture. At the height of nationalist campaigns to censor art in the sixties, seventies and eighties, Battiss included erotic symbols and motifs in many of his pieces in an attempt to oppose the damaging effects that censorship had on creativity and free thinking. - ACScully, L. Walter Battiss (Pretoria: University of Pretoria, 1963) pp. 4-20.Siebrits, W. 'The Five Lives of Walter Battiss: My art celebrates Life, Love, Freedom' in 'Walter Battiss: I Invented Myself?' (Johannesburg: Ampersand Foundation) pp. 80-81.

Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef (South African 1886 - 1957) MALUTISsignedoil on board29,5 by 39cmPROVENANCEStephan Welz & Co. in association with Sotheby's, Johannesburg August 1994, lot 323 Unusual, but simultaneously unmistakeable, Malutis (Lot 439) serves as a wonderful example of one of South Africa's most well-known artist?s visions of the country. With each and every Pierneef, the artist's pure enamorment with the South African landscape is translated through his palette and composition. This particular work is monumental in its approach, with the artist's clear understanding of linearity and space resulting in a piece with a deceptive sense of scale which seems to transcend the 30 by 40cm board, while maintaining its sense of harmony and tranquility.Pierneef's deep knowledge and understanding of indigenous landscapes allowed him to capture natural forms through is use of colour, form and paint application. While Malutis is simplified and visualised through a geometric rendering of space, the use of terracottas and mauve-greys translates light and shadow and indicates a sense of space and depth. As is often seen in his work, an object or obstacle is placed in the immediate foreground of the piece, clearly dividing the plains into foreground and background. We know that Pierneef often returned to areas of the country from which he drew the most inspiration, which is the case with the Maluti (or Maloti) mountain range, which extends from the Free State into Lesotho. The artist first visited Lesotho, then Basutoland, in 1922, revisiting the area on many occasions throughout his career. Perhaps the most notable visit was for the completion of Malutis, Basutoland, one of the 28 commissioned Johannesburg Station Panels in 1929, which were presented in 1932. Pierneef travelled to Lesotho again in 1936 and wrote in a letter to friend A.C.Bouman that he had 'found wonderful designs for stylised work in Basutoland', which we believe is reflected in this work. -ACNel, P.G. (ed.), J.H. Pierneef: His life and his works, (Cape Town and Johannesburg, 1990), pp. 50-85.

Keith Alexander (South African 1946 - 1998) THE SANCTUARYinscribed with the artist's name and title on the reverseoil on canvas114 by 83cmKeith Alexander is regarded as one of South Africa's foremost realist and surrealist painters. The first term allowed him to depict vast landscapes that at first appear to exist within a realm that we inhabit on a daily basis. On further inspection, the strange combinations of structures within the landscape contain an uncanny exoticism that can only occur in dreams and the imagination. In The Sanctuary, the viewer's perception of space is all important, a doorway marks a potential entrance into another world. The checkered tiles where the viewer appears to be positioned, before the threshold, extends into this other world and seemingly turns to a body of water. An island houses an obelisk. On the other side, a house stares down the viewer, possibly the sanctuary that the title suggests, while vast sand dunes extend, high as mountains behind it.Creating a sense of atmosphere was more important to Alexander than the subject matter itself. Initially inspired by the ghost towns of the southern Namib encountered on his honeymoon, deserts and desolation are themes found throughout his oeuvre and these wide open spaces evoke a barrenness, loneliness and a sense of dread as they are mostly devoid of any human activity.Rarely for Alexander, in 'The Sanctuary', there is a glimmer of hope, just across the water, perhaps it is inhabited by people, perhaps it is a place of safety in this unknown world.
