David Leverett, British 1938-2020 - Wild Times; oil on canvas, signed and titled to the reverse 'David Leverett Wild Times', 137.5 x 107.5 cm (unframed) (ARR) Provenance: with Jill George Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse) Note: Leverett's work encapsulates the energy and innovation of the British art scene in the 1960s, alongside his contemporaries John Hoyland, Jeremy Moon and Bridget Riley. Leverett was known for his large-scale and often irregularly-shaped abstract works executed in bright acrylics, which burst with vibrancy and dynamism. The pieces on offer exhibit these qualities clearly and powerfully, and are therefore wonderful examples of Leverett’s signature style. Leverett studied at the Nottingham College of Art in 1957-61, followed by the Royal Academy Schools in 1961-64. In 1966 he had the first of many shows at the Redfern Gallery in London. He was a Visiting Artist at the Royal Academy Schools, the Royal College of Art and Hornsey College of Art, London. He also taught at many different schools, including printmaking at the Slade School of Fine Art. His work is held in public collections including the Arts Council, the Tate Galleries and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Maya Angelou was a big supporter of his work, even writing the introductory essay for one of his catalogues.

Vivienne Westwood & Malcolm McLaren: An 'Anarchist Punk Gang' Seditionaries Muslin Shirtc.1979/80,in white muslin, front with black, green and red printed design, Malcolm McLaren Vivienne Westwood Seditionaries Personal Collection label stitched within the fabric lower right (now moved due to stitching coming away), with D-ring to each shoulder, and D-ring and dog-clip to each long sleeve, accompanied by a letter of provenanceFootnotes:ProvenanceOffered by the vendor who purchased it at the time of creation.'Anarchist Punk Gang', or as it is also known 'The One Per Centers', is one of the final, and darkest, designs by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood to be introduced at Seditionaries. In 1979 McLaren regularly spent time away from London in Paris and later said that while he approved the design, Westwood was principally responsible for the genesis and realisation. The bleakness of the artwork not only reflects the beleaguered state of affairs experienced by the pair and their coterie but also acts as a memoriam for Sex Pistols bass-player Sid Vicious, who had died in February 1979 from a heroin overdose. The Pistols, around whom McLaren and Westwood's design work revolved from 1976, split up at the beginning of 1978 and in October that year, Vicious had been arrested in New York for the murder of his partner Nancy Spungen. His death four months later coincided with the commencement of an extremely acrimonious court case brought against Pistols manager McLaren by the surviving members of the group with the backing of Richard Branson's record company Virgin Records. Since Punk had gone overground, Seditionaries was by this time regularly closed as a result of it being vandalised and graffiti-ed by passing punks and football hooligans, while members of the staff pilfered stock to fund their drug habits. The appropriately death-cult design takes its text and imagery from Hell's Angels biker gangs, and features a skull at the centre surrounded by the phrase 'As You Were I Was As I Am You Will Be.' This derives from a graffiti scrawl attributed to Heinrich Himmler the gonzo writer Hunter S. Thompson included as a chapter heading in his 1966 book Hell's Angels. The skull is positioned between two banners, with all text in so-called 'blackmail' lettering as if cut out of newspaper headlines, just as in the Sex Pistols band logo, 3 and both feature the encircled capital 'A' anarchy sign which first appeared as a radical political symbol in the 1860s as a protest design of the International Workingmen's' Association of Spain. One flagpole is emblazoned '1%' above the statement 'Anarchist Punk Gang'; in contrast, the other carries a quote from a recording of Vicious in an interview circulated after his death: '99% is shit.' This appears above the slogan: 'Create hell and get away with it.' Underneath the red, green and black vector bearing the skull is the statement: 'The barrier between friend and foe is thin 'At certain times of day there are only us.' This is from a quote by a biker in Raymond C. Morgan's book Angels Do Not Forget, which was published in the summer of 1979. The final statement in the design announces: 'We're the 1% who don't fit and don't care.' As well as looping back to Vicious's original statement, this quotes from the chorus of the Pistols' anthem Pretty Vacant, which ends with Johnny Rotten declaring: 'And we don't care.' Note: the opposing texts '1%' and '99% is shit' are absent from this shirt due to the shoulder insets of the muslin design. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Previously, Phillips had heard nothing by Elvis that had caught his attention but on this occasion, in a break in recording with Scotty Moore on electric guitar and Bill Black on string bass, Elvis began singing an improvised, up-tempo version of Crudup's That's All Right, Mama with his acoustic guitar and Phillips thought he was hearing something special. Whether or not this can be regarded as the first rock 'n' roll record is arguable, but it is certainly the one that launched Elvis Presley's career, bringing him to a national, then global audience, and eventually earning him the title 'The King Of Rock 'n' Roll'.Provenance:Ex-lot 229, Bonhams Chelsea, High Art, Rock & Pop, 5th August 1998.Ex-lot 59, Whyte's, Irish Art & Collectibles, 24th March 2013.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A Dudgeon-Type sphygmograph by Hawksley, English, c.1890, the clockwork housing engraved F. P. Hawksley 357 Oxford St London', with clockwork mechanism to one side, wrist strap, in original black leather covered case, The sphygmograph is a device designed for measuring a person's pulse. It consists of a mechanism that is secured to the wrist via a strap, with a metal button positioned over the pulse location. This button is in contact with the pulse point, and a connected needle or pen component moves rhythmically in response to the pulse sensations transmitted through the button. This movement results in the creation of a visual graph that represents the pulse waveform. The sphygmograph was first invented in 1860. In 1881, Robert Ellis Dudgeon (1820-1904) introduced a more lightweight iteration of the sphygmograph. Notably, this version could be conveniently carried in one's pocket. This is a good example of this type of portable sphygmograph

Sir Isaac Lowthian Bell, 1st Baronet and LL.D., was an important player in the industrial landscape of 19th-century Britain. Born on February 15, 1816, in Newcastle-on-Tyne, Bell was the son of Thomas Bell, a partner in the firm of Messrs. Losh, Wilson, and Bell, and the grandson of Isaac Lowthian of Newbiggin, Cumberland. His remarkable journey in metallurgy and chemical engineering would shape the nation's industrial progress and scientific understanding. Bell's entrepreneurial spirit led him to take charge of the Walker Ironworks following his father's passing in 1845. This laid the foundation of a multifaceted career that would span several pioneering endeavors. In 1850, a significant breakthrough occurred when Bell, along with his brother-in-law Robert Benson Bowman and his father-in-law Hugh Lee Pattinson, established a chemical company in Washington, County Durham. Here, they developed a novel process for manufacturing lead oxychloride, a significant advancement for the chemical industry. This venture necessitated Bell's resignation from his position at Losh, Wilson, and Bell, showcasing the complexities of his multiple partnerships. Bell's appetite for innovation extended to engineering and in 1850, he partnered with Robert Stirling Newall to establish the world's first factory capable of manufacturing steel rope and submarine cable, demonstrating his commitment to pushing the boundaries of industrial possibilities. Two years later, his brothers, Thomas Bell and John Bell, joined him to build a major ironworks at Port Clarence, Middlesbrough, equipped with colossal blast furnaces that were the largest in Britain at the time. These blast furnaces produced iron for bridges and steel rails, contributing to the expansion of the British Empire's railways and industries. Bell's involvement extended to the North Eastern Railway Company, where he served as a director and later as deputy chairman. Bell's commitment to innovation wasn't confined to the production of steel and iron and in 1859, he opened Britain's first factory for the manufacture of aluminium, a metal previously considered as precious as gold due to the challenges of its extraction. The plant, located in Washington, utilized the innovative Deville sodium process, making Bell a pioneer in the field. He emphasized the importance of producing pure aluminium, recognizing that even the slightest impurities could affect its properties. Throughout his career, Bell continuously explored new processes and improvements, such as the recycling of heat from escaping flue gases. In 1863, he exhibited thallium, a recently discovered element, at the British Association meeting in Newcastle. This thallium was obtained from the flue deposits at Washington, emphasizing his engagement in scientific and industrial research. One of Bell's notable achievements was overcoming the challenge of using the Cleveland ironstone for steelmaking, a task considered daunting due to the mineral’s high phosphorus content. Through large-scale experiments, he developed a basic steel process that yielded steel rails with minimal phosphorus content, further contributing to the development of the steel industry. Bell also played a key role in comparing the state of iron manufacturing in Britain with foreign competitors, particularly in France, Belgium, and Germany, underlining the importance of Britain's vast coal reserves and the role of labour costs in the industry's success. In 1882, Bell's exploration extended to drilling for salt at Port Clarence, a venture that led to the discovery of an exploitable salt bed. This salt resource would be significant for the production of soda. Sir Isaac Lowthian Bell's contributions extended to various sectors, from metallurgy to chemicals, and his legacy is still apparent in the industrial landscape of Britain. His relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence left an indelible mark on the nation's industrial and scientific progress. For his many contributions, Bell received recognition and honors, including a baronetcy and the Legion of Honour in France. Sir Isaac Lowthian Bell passed away on December 21, 1904, at the age of eighty-nine Honors and Achievements - Founder of the Iron and Steel Institute, serving as its President from 1873 to 1875. - First recipient of the gold medal instituted by Sir Henry Bessemer in 1874. - Became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1874 for his distinction in chemistry and metallurgy, especially of iron. - Served as a juror at International Exhibitions in Philadelphia in 1876 and in Paris in 1878, earning honorary membership in the American Philosophical Institution and the Legion d'Honneur. - Founded the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain in 1877 and was nominated a fellow of the Chemical Society of London. - Served as President of the Society of Chemical Industry from 1889-90. - Elected President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1884 and was made a baronet in 1885. - Became the 10th President of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers in 1886. - Awarded the George Stephenson Medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1890, and the Telford Medal for papers he presented. - Received the Albert Medal of the Royal Society of Arts in 1895 for his metallurgical research and contributions to the iron and steel industries.

Tayloy, Tay, taggers, Tom Document - Obituary Dr T. H. C. Taylor, who died on April 14, 1972, 1 was a leading tropical entomologist and a pioneer of the biological control of insects leaving an enduring impact through his pioneering work on biological control of insects. After graduating with first-class honors in zoology from the University of London in 1924, Taylor's passion led him straight to Fiji, where he embarked on groundbreaking research. In his quest for effective insect control, he traveled extensively throughout Melanesia, Eastern Asia, and the West Indies, collecting suitable parasites and gaining invaluable insights into the diverse challenges of tropical entomology. Taylor's approach, which involved introducing natural predators and parasites to combat destructive pests, challenged conventional methods and established a promising alternative to the widespread use of harmful insecticides. His work laid the foundation for a new era of entomology, inspiring further exploration and advancements in the field. In Fiji, Dr. Taylor took on the coconut moth (Levuana iridescens) problem by introducing the Malaysian fly parasite (Bessa remota). This successful intervention prompted him to further establish the eulophid wasp (Pediobiu.v parvulus) to control the coconut leaf-miner and the coocinellid beetle (Cryptognatha nodiceps) to manage the coconut scale insect. These introductions effectively eliminated these serious pests, thanks to Taylor's hands-on field studies and skillful breeding techniques. Moreover, Dr. Taylor's early research in Trinidad on the thrips (Liothrips urichi) led to a successful control of the pasture weed (Clidemia hirta) in Fiji. By utilizing this natural predator, he demonstrated the potential of biological control as an alternative to harmful insecticides. This approach, which had already been pioneered in California and Hawaii, holds significant relevance today, given the growing global concern over the impact of insecticides on the environment. In his notable publication, "The Biological Control of an Insect in Fiji," Dr. Taylor made a significant contribution to the establishment of biological control as a credible and effective method. He provided valuable insights into the techniques of breeding and deploying predator and parasitic insects in controlled environments. This knowledge formed the foundation for future advancements in the field. In 1935, Dr. Taylor presented a paper in the Jubilee Proceedings of the Association of Applied Biologists, expressing his belief that biological control rarely succeeds in continental areas and is incompatible with chemical use. At the time, his assessment seemed accurate. However, subsequent developments and techniques have proven that biological control can be effective even in continental regions, challenging Dr. Taylor's initial viewpoint. Nonetheless, his early work remains crucial in driving our understanding and exploration of biological control methods.

A Rare & Early Powell & Lealand 1/50In Objective, English, c.1870, the can engraved '1/50In Powell & Lealand JL' and to the objective 'Powell & Lealand No.8' The 1/50th objective is engraved with the low serial number "No 8." The first example of this of this particular lens, now housed in the R.M.S. collection, and was made for Dr. Lionel Beale on October 15th, 1864. Footnote: Very few of these 1/50th objectives were made. The compact focal length and angular aperture, no better than the 1/16th objective, the impracticality in using the lens combined with little enhancement in resolution over lower-power objectives, and of course the huge price ( £31 10s) resulted in few sales. Still, it represents the very height of optical engineering of the mid-Victorian era.

Historically important Edition of Richard Becks Treatise on Achromatic Microscopes, The book, titled 'A Treatise on the Construction, Proper Use and Capabilities of Smith, Beck & Beck's Achromatic Microscopes' by Richard Beck' published 'LONDON, printed or Smith, Beck & Beck, 31, Cornhill: published by John Van Voorst, Paternoster row, MDCCCLXV (1865)' green cloth, gilt lettering to spine, the book comes with a note that reads 'This is the copy which was the personal possesion of Richard Beck. He was suing it to produce a new edition at the time of his early death', the book if filled with pencil corrections and additions to the text. there are also a large number of cut out and glued in engravings of equipment, from the first plate the outer margins are cut out and numbered to form a quick-access indexed notebook of all the plates. the book was owned by Brian Bracegirdle, and the note possibly written by Bracegirdle. The Dr. Brian Bracegirdel Connection. Dr. Brian Bracegirdel was asked to write an article for the Quekett Microscope Club on 12 of his favorite works on microscopy where he stated ‘It has been said to me, when pestering others to write up their own favourites, that it is very difficult to choose just twelve titles, and so it has certainly proved. In my case this may be more acute than for some others, for my personal library on microscopy has been collected over fifty years [I started young on this, when stuff could still be got reasonably], and it is now quite extensive.’ Number 4 on his list was this book, of it he wrote ’My fourth choice is Beck’s work on the achromatic microscope. Richard Beck died soon after this was published in 1865, but I know that he had already started to think of a new edition. I know this because my own copy once belonged to him, and has been extensively written over with alterations in his own hand, with the illustrations from another copy cut up and pasted into different locations. The work is important because it gives full directions for using the microscopes and accessories made by Smith, Beck, & Beck, and thus an insight into the use of instruments made by others. The text is a model of clarity, but it is the plates which excel. The ones in my copy have had their outer margins cut out and numbered just like an indexed notebook, and all 28 of them are of the highest quality in engraving and printing. A few show the results of observations, included to show what was achieved by use of particular techniques: plate 14 shows darkground illumination of Polycystina from Barbados, and is unsurpassed for its stunning quality. Most show details of instruments, and are key for identifying the parts found in cases of accessories from the time. This is a super book, a pleasure to read and re-read for its clarity and even its beauty. Fortunately it has been reprinted, for originals are scarce and expensive'.
