BLACK, in nine carat gold, in original caseNote: 'Andrew Black (23 September 1917 – 16 February 1989) was a Scottish footballer, who played as an inside forward. He was born in Stirling.Black was a prolific scorer with Heart of Midlothian before World War II, scoring 29 goals in 34 games in the 1936–37 season, before finishing as top scorer in the Scottish League with 40 goals in 38 appearances in the following season. He was widely credited the following season as being the first player to score a hat-trick against Rangers at Ibrox; however this had been first achieved by Willie Wilson, also of Hearts, in October 1915.Black played as a guest for Chester during the latter stages of the war but the club were unsuccessful in their attempts to sign him permanently.Black transferred to Manchester City in 1946 and between then and 1950 appeared 139 times and scored 47 goals. In a match during the late 1940s at Maine Road, the Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Sam Bartram sliced a clearance from the edge of his penalty area. Black, stood just inside his own half, headed the ball back over Bartram. City's pitch was 115 yards long so the ball must have travelled nearly sixty yards. He finished his career with Stockport County in 1953.Black won three caps for the Scotland national football team and six wartime caps, including one game where he had to be carried off of the pitch by Frank Swift after becoming injured. He died on 16 February 1989 in Bannockburn Hospital.' WENLOCK OLYMPIAN GAMES INTEREST - LARGE PRESENTATION PADLOCK a large presentation wrought iron padlock and key, possibly a winning entry for the industrial element of the Games later presented to founder William Penny Brookes, inscribed 'Presented to W. P. Brookes Esqr. by a Member of the Wenlock Olympian Class May 18th 1869', the slide catch enclosing keyhole also engraved 'WEN', the padlock 15.5cm high, 11cm wideFootnote: The Wenlock Games were a forerunner to the modern Olympics founded in 1850 by Dr. William Penny Brookes 'for the promotion of the moral, physical and intellectual improvement of the inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood of Wenlock and especially of the working classes, by the encouragement of outdoor recreation, and by the award of prizes annually at public meetings for skill in athletic exercise and proficiency in intellectual and industrial attainments' (source: Wikipedia). Baron Pierre de Coubertin visited the Wenlock Games in 1890 and founded the International Olympic Committee four years later with his obvservations of the Wenlock Games fundamental in his vision for a modern Olympics, later writing 'If the Olympic Games that Modern Greece has not yet been able to revive still survives there today, it is due, not to a Greek, but to Dr W P Brookes' (source: Wikipedia); sadly Dr. Brookes died just four months before the first modern Summer Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896 but his influence lived on, not least in the naming of Wenlock, one of the mascots of the 2012 London Games.Condition is generally good to fair. It is subject to typical age related wear as evident in images, including some minor pitting and gouges to inscribed side (noticeable around the date). RARE & POSSIBLY UNIQUE - WILLIE BROWN OF GLASGOW SELECT XI, HIS MATCH WORN SHIRT & CAP VS. IRISH SELECT XI, 1917 the crest inscribed GvI 1917 bordering the central town crest, the cap with white metal bullion tassle and same inscriptionNote: The following lots, 1561-1573, have come to the current vendor by descent, and were proudly displayed at the Hampden Scottish Football Museum up until recently. The above is a stand out rarity. It was worn during a Glasgow Select XI game against Ireland arranged during WWI in 1917. Records are scant and it is unknown whether another exists. It is a standout early piece of Scottish footballing heritage.Willie Brown, as per the Celtic Wiki:'Local lad Willie Brown signed for Celtic from Parkhead Juniors in 1916 as a “crack inside-forward“.He made just two starts for the Bhoys but had a good debut having scored Celtic’s goal in a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock in October 1918. David Syme & James Price also debuted that day, but not one of the three went on to have a long-term career at Celtic. He followed that debut appearance a week later but Celtic crashed 3-0 to Rangers at Parkhead, in what was to be his last and only other appearance for Celtic’s first team. Celtic were now 3pts behind Rangers (2pts for a win in those days), and so didn’t have the same leeway as before. In fairness, Celtic had actually lost to Rangers 2-0 the week before his debut too, so can’t put the 3-0 defeat to Rangers in the league as being due to the inclusion of Willie Brown & David Syme (who also played).Celtic however recovered and went on to regain the league title, so Willie Brown can be proud to have played a part in this. His goal on his debut in that draw with Kilmarnock won another point that helped to make a difference, as Celtic went on to win the league title by just the 1pt in season 1918/19.After failing to win a regular starting spot he departed Celtic Park for Dundee at the end of the season. He played for Lochgelly Utd (the ‘Happylanders‘) against Celtic in the Scottish Cup in Fife on 13 Jan 1923, but Celtic still triumphed 3-2 and went on to win the Scottish Cup that season, Celtic’s first Scottish Cup title in 9 years. The match v Lochgelly Utd is reputedly one of the first ever matches filmed. However, Celtic was his love and he was even writing to the Celtic View in 1967.Sadly he passed away in 1972 from alzheimer’s disease. He is buried in Janefield Cemetry. His career memorabilia was donated to and is held in the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park, including on display is his Glasgow select jersey and cap v Ireland in 1917.'

BRIAN LAUDRUP OF RANGERS F.C., SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP FINAL COMMEMORATIVE SHIRT 1996 signed by the player, embroidered crest, Adidas, 'The Coca-Cola Cup Final 1996' and printed sponsor to front, S.F.L. branding to sleeves, mounted with plaquette, framed and under glass, 94cm x 94cm overallNote: Brian Laudrup is a Danish former footballer who is often regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation. He played for a number of clubs including Bayern Munich and Fiorentina, before he was signed by Rangers in 1994.He would spend a total of four years in Scotland, winning numerous trophies and accolades including three League titles, one Scottish Cup and one League Cup. He would look back upon his time with Rangers as ‘the best four years of my career.’ Certainly, the fans were of the same mind, Laudrup later inducted into the Hall of Fame upon its inauguration in 2000.This shirt was won as part of a competition when it was billed as the player’s match worn shirt from the 1996 Scottish League Cup final. Following further research, we can confirm that this shirt is not a match worn or issued example and is rather a commemorative piece. The game was played against Hearts, a team looking sharp, having already seen off Celtic enroute to the final. For Rangers, this season held a particular importance. This League Cup was a chance to set the tone during a year that would see them lift their celebrated ninth-League title in a row.The match itself was fiercely contested. Two goals from McCoist in the first half proving insufficient when Hearts drew level at 59 minutes. After a bust up and a dram at half time, Gazza was there though. Two quickfire goals at 64’ and 66’ looking enough to secure the game. Or was it? A 90th minute goal from future Rangers man Davie Weir would draw Hearts to within touching distance. Ultimately it wasn’t enough though, as the quality of that legendary Rangers squad shone through. Another trophy in what was, a most dominant period.Provenance: This shirt was won in 1996 as part of a competition ran by the Daily Record and was sent by the 1873 Rangers Superstore. It is presented alongside the prize-winning letter.

RANSEN: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A DRUNKEN TANUKI HARA NO TSUZUMIBy Ransen, signed Ransen 蘭川Japan, Kyoto, first half of 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)The jovial badger sitting on an emptied sake bottle (tokkuri), one paw resting on its bushy tail, forming the cord attachment, and drumming on its bloated belly, raising its head, the mouth slightly opened with visible teeth, as if about to let out a drunken howl. The eyes are inlaid dark horn and the fur is finely incised. Signed underneath the sake bottle RANSEN – a pupil of the Hogen Rantei of Kyoto.HEIGHT 3.7 cmCondition: Very good condition with only very minor surface wear. The tanuki possesses magical powers and can change forms, sometimes into Buddhist monks; they are jovial, but also dangerous, as they have been known to suffocate hunters with their enormous scrotums. The act of drumming on the belly, according to legend, was used by tanuki to beguile travelers and hunters to lead them astray. However, it has also been said that tanuki would get together just for fun, drumming on their bellies under the moonlight, perhaps even with some sake involved.Literature comparison:Compare to a closely related wood netsuke of a belly drumming tanuki without the sake bottle, by Ransen, illustrated in Davey, Neil K. (1974) Netsuke: A comprehensive study based on the M.T. Hindson Collection, p. 90, no. 248. Auction comparison:Compare to an ivory netsuke of a belly drumming tanuki with the sake bottle, by Rantei, sold at Sotheby's, The Carlo Monzino Collection of Netsuke, Inro and Lacquer, 21 June 1995, London, lot 335 (sold for 3,220 GBP).

Carved on the stem with the signature in partially worn ukibori characters Iwami no ju KANMAN […] with a kakihan.LENGTH 11.1 cmCondition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and traces of use.Provenance: Ex-collection Joe Kurstin. Ex-collection Robert S. Huthart, acquired from the above. Dr. M. Joseph 'Joe' Kurstin (1931-2021) was a prominent Miami ophthalmologist who arguably built one of the greatest netsuke collections of all time. He was known by netsuke and inro lovers worldwide and made many lifelong friends in this tight-knit community. He published several books and articles on the subject and generously lent his collection for exhibitions at the Yale University Gallery, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Epcot Center at Disney World, and The Tobacco and Salt Museum, Tokyo.Kanman (1793-1859) was a Japanese netsuke carver of the Iwami school, which was founded by Seiyodo Tomiharu. Most of his work was designed in the first three decades of the 19th century. According to Anne Hull Grundy, "His netsuke [...] are extremely rare." David Burditt has described him as one of the greatest of the Iwami carvers. A hallmark of Kanman's work is his understanding of the materials he uses. His woods demonstrate wonderful undercutting, deep incisions, copious ukibori, and detailed overall carving. By contrast, his horn netsuke show more restrained carving, but careful finishing and polishing so that their surfaces are smooth and glow with the sheen only such material can produce.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related dark wood netsuke of a toad on a lotus leaf by Kanman, illustrated in Gould, Irving (1987) The Gould Collection of Netsuke, p. 367. MIWA KATSUSUKE: A SUPERB WOOD NETSUKE OF GAMA SENNIN WITH HUGE TOADBy Miwa Katsusuke, signed Miwa Katsusuke 三輪勝助 with kakihanJapan, Edo (Tokyo), c. 1800, Edo period (1615-1868)Published: Meinertzhagen, Frederick / Lazarnick, George (1986) MCI, Part A, p. 572 (not illustrated).International Netsuke Society Journal (2001) Vol. 21, No. 3, p. 28. (advert by Sydney Moss Ltd.)Sydney L. Moss Ltd. (2004) Outside the Box, p. 42, no. 18.A remarkably powerful netsuke carved from plum or isu wood, of an attractive grain and color, depicting a seated Gama Sennin wearing a thick mugwort leaf skirt spreading about him and leaning against the gigantic toad behind him, the expressions of both forcefully dyspeptic and disagreeable. The flattened base with large asymmetrical himotoshi and the signature MIWA KATSUSUKE, the last character of which is written to resemble a kakihan.LENGTH 4 cmCondition: Very good condition, appealingly worn, few tiny nicks, few light surface scratches.Provenance: Ex-collection W.W. Winkworth. Sotheby's, 27 June 1979, London, lot 99. Ex-collection Raymond Bushell. Sydney L. Moss, London, 2004. French private collection, acquired from the above. The present netsuke was recorded by Frederick Meinertzhagen in his Card Index, wherein he noted, very interestingly, that it was shown to him on 27 June 1951 “by Winkworth who wrote this characteristic commentary:'… a small seated Gama looking rather like a determined Rationalist standing up for Individualism and the 'scientific approach' in controversy with a bigoted Catholic; I and my toad don't believe any nonsense about Transubstantiation! My toad says if you'd been a tadpole once you'd have more sense than to believe in Purgatory!' (too profound for my understanding, F.M.)”Katsusuke, or Shojo, can be translated as 'worthy follower', and those enthusiasts who study the early masters have concluded that in the few work's signed 'Miwa's worthy follower' we very probably see a hand which may be categorized as a direct pupil of the master. Indeed, Meinertzhagen's estimation of the carver seems to have been ratcheted up a notch between his June 1951 introductory card, explaining that only three works were known, which “show true artistic feeling, but lack originality of design, subtlety and fine craftsmanship”, and his handwritten note of May 1955, “Might this carver be Miwa 2nd, or even the first Miwa?”Literature comparison:Compare two related wood netsuke by Miwa Katsusuke, illustrated in Meinertzhagen, Frederick / Lazarnick, George (1986) MCI, Part A, p. 572.
