HENRY MOULE'S PATENT MECHANICAL DRY EARTH CLOSET In 1859, the Reverend Henry Moule of Fordington invented the first composting toilet after deciding that his family's cesspit had become intolerable. Moule discovered that dry earth, mixed with human waste, produced clean compost in just a few weeks. A religious man, Moule disapproved of the Water Closet. He felt it polluted God's rivers and seas and was a waste of God's nutrients contained in excrement, which should be returned to the soil. In 1873 Moule took out a patent on his design for a mechanical earth closet, which allowed human manure to be saved for return to the soil, without the owner having to endure the stink of the average privy. Dry earth or peat is put into the hopper at the back of the seat and a removable bucket placed below. When the handle is pulled, a small quantity of earth is spread on top of the human waste to reduce the smell and help it to decay. When the bucket is full the contents are dug into the garden.Henry Moule (1801-1880) the sixth son of George Moule, solicitor and banker, was born at Melksham, Wiltshire, on 27 January 1801, and educated at Marlborough Grammar School. He was elected a foundation scholar of St John's College, Cambridge, and graduated B.A. 1821 and M.A. 1826. He was ordained to the curacy of Melksham in 1823, and took sole charge of Gillingham, Dorset, in 1825. He was made vicar of St George's at Fordington in the same county in 1829, and remained there for the remainder of his life. For some years he undertook the duty of chaplain to the troops in Dorchester barracks, for whose use, as well as for a detached district of his own parish, he built in 1846, partly from the proceeds of his published ‘Barrack Sermons,’ 1845 (2nd edit. 1847), a church known as Christ Church, West Fordington. In 1833 his protests brought to an end the evils connected with the race meetings at Dorchester. Moule also wrote an important work, entitled ‘Eight Letters to Prince Albert, as President of the Council of the Duchy of Cornwall,’ in 1855, prompted by the condition of Fordington parish, belonging to the Duchy. In two letters in the Times of 24 February and 2 April 1874 he advocated a plan for extracting gas from Kimmeridge shale. He died at Fordington vicarage on 3 February 1880.
HARDY, THOMAS., THE TRUMPET MAJOR, 'John Loveday a Soldier in the War with Buonaparte' And 'Robert His Brother First Mate in the Merchant Service', a Wessex Edition, from The Wessex Novels, prose Vol XI, published 1912, London, Macmillan and Co., Ltd., with a number of other Wessex Editions, and further Thomas Hardy Macmillan publications (a lot)Provenance: The Derek Mills Library, A Collection of Thomas Hardy and Dorset BooksDerek C Mills (7th November 1930 – 13th October 2019). Born in Poole in 1930, Derek’s interest in Thomas Hardy was evident in his later schoolwork, and formed a significant part of his higher education at Westminster College. His final dissertation was based on Hardy’s life and works, and contributed to Derek attaining the qualifications that saw him follow his father into the teaching profession. In 1963 Derek was appointed as an English teacher at the newly built Secondary Modern School in Cranborne, Dorset. He and his family settled in Cranborne, and it remained his home for the rest of his life. In 1971 he took the position of librarian at Queen Elizabeth School in Wimborne, Dorset. Derek served as Publications Manager for The Hardy Society for a number of years in the 1980’s. He provided Hardy enthusiasts throughout the world with publications, information and advice. Upon retirement from teaching he entered local politics, serving as Parish Councillor, District Councillor, and as Chairman of East Dorset District Council in the 1990’s. Derek’s other passion was for the county of Dorset. He was a life member of The Society of Dorset Men, a member of the Dorset Natural History & Archaeological Society, and a founding member of the Cranborne History Society. He collected a large library of books on all aspects of Dorset. His family are delighted and grateful that Dukes Auctioneers are providing the opportunity for others to own and enjoy their father’s cherished books.
HENRY JOSEPH MOULE (1825-1904) 'Fordington St. George, Dorchester' river view with figures to the foreground and St Peter's Church looming over houses to the distance, watercolour, 14.5cm x 19cm (unframed but mounted); together with another similar view 'At Cokers Frome' looking towards Dorchester with the tower of St Peter's Church and the spire of All Saints Church visible through tree branches, watercolour, 15.5cm x 13.75cm (2)Henry Joseph Moule was an English watercolour artist, and friend of Thomas Hardy. He was born at Gillingham, Dorset on 25 September 1825, the eldest of eight sons of Henry Moule, and educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, gaining a B.A. in 1848 and M.A. in 1853. He then spent some years as a private tutor, secretary and librarian, to the family of Lord Wriothesley Russell (son of John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford) and then the Earl Fitzwilliam at Wentworth Woodhouse. He spent the years 1862-1877 in Scotland, and then (after a brief sojourn in Ireland) returned to Dorset (where he had grown up). In 1883 he was appointed the first curator of the Dorset County Museum, a post he held until his death on 13 March 1904; he left several thousand paintings to the museum. He was a close friend of Thomas Hardy for fifty years, their first meeting being shortly before 1854. He was 15 years older than Thomas Hardy, and it seems likely that they met when Henry returned from University to his Father's vicarage at Fordington and Hardy was still quite young. There can be no doubt they were close friends as he encouraged Hardy's development from an impressionable age, was a regular visitor to the Hardy household, and in later life taught Thomas how to paint. At this time the Moule family were also friendly with the Reverend William Barnes, the Dorset poet and philologist who also acted as a mentor to Thomas Hardy.

DORSET INTEREST: A HANDWRITTEN INDENTURE detailing the transfer of an estate between a Brune Dackombe of Corfe Castle and a John Voegt, ink on vellum, mounted on cardThe Dackombe family were prominent Corfe citizens acquiring considerable estates in the Isle of Purbeck and elsewhere by the marriage of Thomas, second son of John Dackombe of Stepleton and Sybil, and Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Richard Clavyle (Clavell) of Corfe Castle, in about 1500. Elizabeth was born in 1486 and died 1528, predeceasing her husband by thirteen years - Thomas dying in 1541. Elizabeth's maternal grandfather was Stephan Keines and was entitled an Earl - this explains the fifth quartering in the Dackombe of Corfe's Arms i.e. 5 Quarterly i & iv: Argent on a chevron sable three caps of maintenance. Caps of maintenance were only granted to earls. Robert, born in 1521, was heir to both his mother's and his father's estates. The Corfe Pedigree shows a reasonably uncomplicated descent until Edward Dackombe, son and heir of William and Mary, who married, first, Susan Turner by whom he had Robert and Mary. His second marriage to Anne, daughter of Henry Brune of Athelhampton, produced a son, Brune, born in 1617. Edward died in 1635 and bequeathed to Brune Dackombe his mansion house and farm in Corfe Castle for a term of 99 years, with the reversion to descend to his eldest son Robert. Robert settled all his estates on his sister Mary and her first husband, Thomas Morton. The residue of the term of years on the manor house and farm ultimately descended to Henry Dackombe, grandson of Brune, and was sold by him to John Morton - grandson of Mary and Thomas Morton. John Morton had by then become owner of the reversion as described. All of which is why the beautiful Elizabethan manor house which is now a hotel is called Morton House, but was, formerly, Dackombes. Athelhampton manor house, has stained glass heraldic arms incorporated in its windows; two of which carry the Dackombe insignia. Brune Dackombe, who descended from this House, fought for the Royalist cause, and a short piece is devoted to him in this history. Edward, son of William and Mary was mayor in 1623 and M.P. at some time. His younger brother, Henry, also held this post in 1614 and 1621. Edward, son of Brune, was mayor in 1679; his duties were not discharged honourably and he was called to Parliament to answer a charge of 'miscarriages in the returning of Members during elections.' His son, Henry who was mayor in 1699, was accused of 'partiality' when vowing his favourite candidate would win regardless of the election. Like father, like son.
