Lot 457

42.5inch barrel with three barrel bands and front fore-end band, iron mounted, bridled lock, iron fittings, sling ring behind rear side and on middle barrel band, the underside of the butt carved with initials CW. This was a private purchase pattern made for officer's only and seems to incorporate features of the M.1728 musket as well as later found on the M.1754, alterations that might have first originated on this privately made piece, these being the position of the swivel loops and the bridled lock. See Boudriot No.2, C.10 P5. for the M.1728 Musket and No.9, C9 P2. for the M.1754. From its discovery in Britain it is possible that this might be a rare survivor of one of the 1,500 ‘firelocks’ sent by the French Government along with Charles Stuart aboard the French ship Le du Teillay in July, 1745, to arm his Jacobite Highland supporters, or else a musket purchased in France by a Jacobite officer prior to his leaving for the expedition.
