On September 8 the Battalion took over the Sept. front trenches immediately to the left of the Staden Railway, where the line was held by a series of posts running across the Broembeek. ARAB-SASANIAN: Khusraw "lillâh" type, ca. 656-670?? AR drachm (4.00g), BYSh (Bishapur), YE37, A-A6, one "tooth" omitted in the mint name BYSh (typo!), Extremely Fine, RRR. The lillah type was likely produced with what could be easily read either as lillah in Arabic or the first two letters of APD in Pahlavi ("good"), so that they would be acceptable to everyone, especially in eastern Iran, Central Asia and along the Silk Road. Starting Price: $230 View image on stevealbum.com View 2nd image on stevealbum.com
ARAB-SASANIAN: Khusraw "lillâh" type, ca. 656-670?? AR drachm (4.10g), ART (Ardashir Khurra), YE37, A-A6, couple very light scratches on reverse, lovely strike, Very Fine to Extremely Fine, RR. The lillah type was likely produced with what could be easily read either as lillah in Arabic or the first two letters of APD in Pahlavi ("good"), so that they would be acceptable to everyone, especially in eastern Iran, Central Asia and along the Silk Road. "ARAB-ARMENIAN: Muhammad, ca. 700, AR zuzun (3.21g), "ShY", year "37", A-H97, with Muhammad in Arabic in ObQ2 & awsrwy (Khusro) in Pahlavi before the obverse bust, Extremely Fine, RRR. This type is believed to have been issued within the regions of Armenia or Azerbaijan. This mint name is of uncertain meaning, perhaps derived from a prototype from the Shiraz mint, and date, while convincing 37, is probably just a copy from the prototype. Also of considerable interest is the Greek letter F instead of a star withint the right crescent in the obverse margin. Other types have the Greek M or S in one of the crescents in either the obverse or reverse margin. These Greek characters are of undetermined meaning, but the use of Greek does support the assignment to the Caucasian lands, where Byzantine silver coins were circulating throughout the 7th centuries, first introduced by Heraclius circa 615 AD. This type is currently assigned to the very last years of the 7th and early 8th century. The weight of 3.20-3.25g corresponds quite accurately to half the weight of the Byzantine hexagram (about 6.5g)" Starting Price: $4000 View image on stevealbum.com View 2nd image on stevealbum.com

The obverse text is al-a`zam al-`adil / hulagu al-mu`azzam / zuyyida `azamatuhu duriba bi-madinat / mayyafariqin. The year AH654 is the first year of Hulagu`s reign, the earliest known date for coins bearing his name. Starting Price: $1000 View image on stevealbum.com View 2nd image on stevealbum.com

"YUAN: Da Chao, ca. 1206-1227, AR cash (2.56g), H-19.1, FD-1696, da chao means "Great Dynasty," the name the Mongols used for themselves, nice example, Very Good to Fine, RR. According to Hartill, "This coin is alleged to have been cast by the legendary Chengis Khan at his capital at Karakorum. It is usually found in silver." This would place the date about 50-60 years prior to the formal foundation of the Yuan dynasty in 1280, when Khubilai Khan was installed as Emperor of China at Beijing. An alternative attribution assigns this type to the period of Kublai Khan (1260-1294), who first claimed the title of Khaqan in 1260, finalizing his power after the defeat of his rival, Ariq Böke, in 1264. The coin would presumably have been produced either before 1280 or before the introduction of his zhi yuan tong bao cash coins in about 1285. It is currently estimated that approximately 200-250 specimens are known to exist." Starting Price: $950 View image on stevealbum.com View 2nd image on stevealbum.com
KUSHAN: Vasu Deva I, ca. 191-230+, AV stater (7.98g), Mitch-3388, king standing, nimbate & helmeted, offering at the altar & holding a trident, second trident above the altar / Siva & bull, with Siva also holding diadem & trident, lovely bold strike, choice Extremely Fine. This type, with 2 tridents on the obverse, was struck during the middle and later years of Vasu Deva`s reign. It was formerly assumed that the single trident type belonged to a Vasu Deva I, the double trident to a postulated Vasu Deva II, but it is now generally accepted that both types belong to the same Vasu Deva, the first. "BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AV mohur (12.22g), "Murshidabad", AH1202 year 19 (frozen), KM-113, Prid-83 type, oblique milling sloping towards the left, type struck 1825-1830, Very Fine to Extremely Fine. This piece is a contemporary unofficial issue, die-identical to the illustrated example of Prid-401, and would have been produced either unofficially at one of the Presidency mints or at a privately operated mint, for the following reasons. On the obverse, the H of muhammad is shaped differently from the regular specimens, the H at the end of shah and padishah are plain round circles, and the first A and D of padishah touch one another. On the reverse, the 5-petal flower touches one of the pellets in the 5-pellet rosette to the lower left. The "scratch" on the reverse is not a coin scratch but a die-break, which could occur on both official and unofficial issues."
