HISTORICALLY INTERESTING 1914 XMAS TRUCE ACCOUNT, LETTERS, PHOTOS & ACCOUNT OF WAR EXPERIENCES OF SECOND LIEUTENANT HUGH C.BARKER LONDON RIFLE BRIGADE & MACHINE GUN CORPS, this important collection including handwritten account of his war experiences dated October 1915. Also substantial collection of letters from the Western Front from late 1914, through 1915 and with others from 1916 & 1917. It is believed Hugh was transferred to Egypt and Palestine until the end of hostilities. The account provides considerable detail particularly of this early time at the front. After training at Crowborough he arrived on the Western front in November 1914 and was sent straight to the front line at Ploegsteert Wood. He describes in detail nights in the trenches, stand to, shelling and sheer random nature of casualties. Of major historical interest is his full page hand written account of the so called “X-Mas Truce” of 1914, he states that he experiences the carols and banter across the lines on Christmas (X-MAS) eve. He returned to billets and when he comes back to the trenches around 11 am both German and British are strolling around No Mans Land. He describes exchanging cigarettes for cigars from the enemy soldiers and German bodies are collected for burial. He states that the troops involved are Saxons who don’t want to fight their English Friends. First hand written accounts of the Christmas truce of 1914 are very rare and make this collection an outstanding item of historical interest. In addition to the account, the sheer numbers of letters, photographs and other ephemera tell the story of one officers war and his involvement in one of the most notorious acts of humanity seen in one of the bloodiest and inhumane conflicts of the 20th century.

John Henning , a George IV deal cased set of fifty plaster figural relief... John Henning (1771-1851), a George IV deal cased set of fifty plaster figural relief panels after the Parthenon frieze, dated June 1820, the larger panels approximately 24 x 7cm, many inscribed for 'HENNING' and dated, arranged on seven stacking boards, the box with lift off cover and hinged fall front, 23cm high, 45cm wide, 30cm deep John Henning, a Scottish born artist was one of the first to access the Elgin Marbles following their acquisition by the British Museum in 1816 and like most who saw them, was struck by their beauty. He embarked on a project of making models of the Parthenon and Phigaleian friezes, restoring the missing elements, an undertaking which he felt was not only useful for his own artistic gain, but also for pecuniary reasons. His initial studies in ivory were unsuccessful and so he used intaglio carved slate as moulds for plaster casting, producing small tablet sections which were sold in boxes. Working for Josiah Wedgwood at the time, Henning took twelve years to complete the reliefs

A Paris porcelain mug or pot a boire , 1790-94 A Paris porcelain mug or pot a boire (Christopher Potter, Rue de Crussol), 1790-94, painted in colours with a panel of a vase of flowers reserved on a scrolling foliate ground within gilt vine borders, 13cm high, gilt mark Potter a paris Christopher Potter (c.1751-1817) was originally a Cambridgeshire land owner and army victualler. By 1789 he seems to have been in Paris, probably as a result of the scandal surrounding his unseating from the parliamentary constituency of Colchester for corrupt practises. In June 1789 he petitioned the National Assembly for an exclusive right to open a workshop to decorate and print on glass and ceramics but was turned down. He nevertheless took premises on the Rue de Crussol under the name Manufacture du prince de Galles and completed his first order in 1790 before selling the company to its director, Louis Blancheron in 1794. Around this time he re-opened the Chantilly Factory, closed because of the revolution and had further potteries at Montereau and Forges-les-Eaux. Cf. Victoria and Albert museum, no. C.20-1913 for a smaller mug of similar shape with different decoration but similar mark.
