A collection of early 20th century Chinese textiles, shoes, fly whisk and three soapstone carvings relating to Owen Stevenson (1861-1947):, comprising two pairs of adults shoes and six pairs of children's shoes , four sections of silk embroidery and a group of printed and embroidered scrolls, together with other related artifacts.* Notes - Owen Stevenson (1861-1947) born on the 29th March 1861 in Latimer Nr Amersham the youngest of six children. In 1877 at the age of 16 he started work at the GPO as a sorter working London till around 1881. In the early 1880s he joined the China Inland Mission with a view to becoming a missionary in China setting sail with three others aboard the SS Nizam on 29th August 1883. His first appointment was in Tali-fu in the Yunnan province

A CHINESE FAMILLE VERTE DOUBLE-SIDED TILE, KANGXI 1662-1722 The rectangular tile painted to one side with a scene depicting the Zhua zhou ceremony, with ladies surrounding a small boy before an altar selecting auspicious objects on his first birthday, the other with a flowering pomegranate branch, mounted in a later hardwood frame as a table screen, 23cm x 27.2cm. A CHINESE IMPERIAL WUCAI ‘MONTH’ CUP, SIX CHARACTER QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1736-95 Painted in underglaze blue, iron-red and coloured enamels with narcissus and flowering branches emblematic of the first month of the year, 5.8cm. Provenance: formerly in an English private collection. Cf. An antique Chinese bronze Stele, with attractive decoration on circular base, 29cms (11 1/2") high, the back inscribed 'Presented a statue of a bodhisattva on the second day in the third month in the first year of Tiantong period,' possibly Ming Dynasty, or later?, on carved wooden stand. (1)
17th Century English SchoolOval, "Portrait of Thomas Coghill with large white collar," head and shoulders, O.O.C., 76cms x 63cms (30" x 25") with narrow gilt frame. Name written on back. If this is the portrait formerly at Aldenham House and dated 1637, then he is Sir Thomas Coghill of Bletchingdon, Oxfordshire (1603-1659), son of John Coghill a London Alderman and barber-surgeon and grandson of Marmaduke Coghill of Coghill Hall, Yorkshire. He was Sheriff of the County in 1633 and was knighted at Woodstock in that year. He rebuilt the medieval Manor of Bletchingdon Park c 1630 and garrisoned it on behalf of the King during the Civil War (it surrendered in 1645; it was sold in 1716 and the present manor house was built in 1782.) One of his daughters was the first wife of Sir Christopher Wren.Provenance: Drumcondra House, Dublin, by direct descent through the Coghill family, to the present owner. (1)
