* COLIN W BURNS (BRITISH b 1944 - ), HUNTSMAN IN A LANDSCAPE oil on board, signed 62cm x 91cm (24.5 x 35.8 inches) Framed. Note: Born in 1944, Colin Burns grew up in a Norfolk seaside town. From the age of seven, he began to paint landscapes and sunsets and, as a nine year old, started winning art prizes at school. At the age of twelve, his parents moved to live in the middle of the country in a marshland farmhouse and his former town life was replaced with beautiful surroundings and the local wildlife. Colin Burns claims that this change of lifestyle was the greatest artistic influence he has experienced. He became more and more involved in painting and began observing the wonders of nature. At the age of sixteen he left school and qualified as an accountant and went to work at ‘Birds Eye’ in Great Yarmouth, painting in his spare time and finding an enthusiastic market for his local landscapes. Colin’s paintings caught the eye of a well known Art Dealer - Ivor Hook of ‘The Little Gallery’ in Elm Hill, Norwich - and, through an introduction in 1976 to the renowned ‘Tryon’ Gallery in London specialising in wildlife by leading artists, Colin held his first exhibition in 1977. Having left ‘Birds Eye’ in 1978 to become a professional artist, painting both in oil and watercolour, concentrating on the East Anglian countryside and the birds that inhabit it, Colin Burns has now become one of the most ·successful artists of the day. The Highlands of Scotland and its moors with its unique Scottish wildlife are also beautifully portrayed along with London scenes and even Central Park in New York, such is the versatility of Colin’s talent with the brush. However it is the East Anglian countryside for which he is regarded as a leading wildlife artist. The international Auction House ‘Christies’ now almost exclusively handles the sales of his new work through sales in London, New York and Scotland. Many of his paintings have been reproduced as greetings cards and prints and his original oils and watercolours are keenly sought after and included in important collections in Europe and the USA.
* MOIRA BEATY (SCOTTISH 1922- 2015), BOYS WILL BE BOYS oil on board, signed 20cm x 26cm Framed. Note: Moira went to Glasgow School of Art in 1939 where her contemporaries included Joan Eardley and Margot Sandeman. These three young women were regarded by their lecturers as the brightest stars of their generation. After one year as a student she was recruited to Bletchley Park where she worked as a code breaker, one of Churchill's 'corkscrew thinkers'. She returned to GSA in 1947 to complete her studies. Moira's enduring talent was recognised again last summer at the age of 92 with a sell out exhibition in Kirkcudbright. Moira Beaty was a resolute and determined woman who was an integral part of the famous group at Bletchley Park who did much to aid the Allies' victory in the Second World War. She worked in Hut 8 where Alan Turing and Peter Twinn set up the Naval Enigma Code. Beaty was responsible to Twinn - the first mathematician to be recruited to Bletchley. "I discovered something," Beaty modestly remarked years later, "a code within a code. I was immediately moved to within the codebreakers and became a cryptographer working on the German Secret Service codes." The Twinn team was involved in breaking the secretive Abwehr codes which were even more complicated than the ordinary military messages. The information this provided to the Allies in such major operations as the desert campaign, the D-Day landings and the sinking of the battleship Tirpitz proved vital to the war effort. Her first solo exhibition was at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh in 1979 and at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow. Her works were also seen at the Cadogan Contemporary Gallery in London and around Dumfries - notably at the Gracefield Arts Centre. In 2001 Gracefield held a major retrospective exhibition of both Moira and Stuart Beaty's works, entitled Full Circle. Last year Beaty officially opened the Kirkcudbright Summer Art Exhibition: Glasgow Girls 1920 - 1960, and held a solo exhibition in the town's Harbour Cottage Gallery. Both exhibitions were hugely popular and, at 92, Moira Beaty was still making a strong impression and gaining new collectors..

* RONALD RAE, THY WILL BE DONE charcoal on paper, signed, titled and dated '86 87cm x 154cm Framed and under glass. Note: Ronald Rae was born in Ayr, Scotland in 1946. Whilst still in short trousers he struck his first granite rock. At the age of twelve he was drawing a weekly cartoon strip for a local newspaper. Drawing would be an important part of his life but sculpture his main love and obsession. In the beginning Rae explored his faith through his art. This resulted in a large series of emotive drawings and carvings based on the life of Christ. Being brought up in the countryside it followed that he expressed his appreciation of animals in his art. Aware of his Celtic heritage he thrilled at seeing Scotland's ancient carved stones and Celtic crosses that often included wild boar, horses and bears. In response he has carved all these animals. Rae is one of Scotland's best known sculptors, having carved the Lion of Scotland, located in St Andrews Square, Edinburgh. The Lion was carved from a twenty tonne boulder of pink Corrennie granite from Aberdeenshire. It took over a year to complete using hand tools only. At present the sculpture is on loan to Essential Edinburgh and on exhibition in St Andrew Square Gardens in Edinburgh City Centre.
