Hill, John, Sir - The British Herbal, First edition. Large folio, original sheep boards - rebacked. Allegorical coloured engraving as frontispiece by H. Roberts after S. Wale, coloured engraved title page vignette, dedication page with coloured engraved arms of Earl of Northumberland and 75 plates of about 1500 botanical and herbal specimens. Printed for T. Osborne and J. Shipton in Gray's Inn. & c. London 1756Sir John Hill (1714-1775) was apparently from Peterborough. He was trained as an apothecary and set up a small shop in St. Martin's Lane. He travelled all over the country in search of rare herbs in order to write a herbal but this took longer than he thought. He was a prolific writer, his first publication being a translation of Theophrastuss History of Stones (1746). He edited the British Magazine (1746-1750), and for two years (1751-1753) he wrote a daily letter, The Inspector, for the London Advertiser and Literary Gazette. He also produced novels, plays and scientific works, and was a large contributor to the supplement of Ephraim Chambers's Cyciopaedia. His personal and scurrilous writings made him many enemies, including Henry Fielding, Christopher Smart and David Garrick all of whom attacked him in print. The Dictionary of National Biography attribute 76 different works the Hill but his most important are his botanical works. In addition Hannah Glasse's famous manual of cookery was generally ascribed to him (see Boswell, ed. Hill, iii. 285) as it was not readily believed that a woman could have written it. Dr Johnson said of him that he was an ingenious man, but had no veracity. The British Herbal, however, is a work of veracity and vitally important for modern botanical nomenclature in that not only did Hill attempt to name and categorize the flowers and herbs which grow in Britain but he classifed them on the forms of the corolla and gynoecium and criticised the Linnaean system.

An Air Force Cross group of 9 medals to Sir Archibald Frederick Hordern C.B.E. comprising A.F.C (1940), O.St.J, K.P.M, WW1 trio, D.M, 1935 jubilee and 1937 Coronation.Sir Archibald Frederick Hordern was born on 15 June 1889.He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and at Royal Military College, Sandhurst.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the South Staffordshire Regiment. He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1919 and gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. He was decorated with the award of the Air Force Cross. He was Chief Constable of the East Riding, Yorkshire between 1926 and 1934 and held the office of Chief Constable of Cheshire between 1934 and 1935. He held the office of Chief Constable of Lancashire between 1935 and 1950. He was invested as a Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1942. He was invested as a Knight Bachelor in 1946. He became a Liveryman of the Coachmakers' and Coach Harness Makers' Company. He was decorated with the award of the King's Police Medal (K.P.M.) and was invested as an Officer, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (O.St.J.) He died on 17 April 1950 at age 60.

A Queen Elizabeth II 2007 Royal Marine commando gallantry Afghanistan military cross pair Awarded to PO64521K Marine Matthew Bispham, also in this lot a Afghanistan operational service medal. Matthew Bispham joined the Royal Marines and completed his commando training in October 2006 and shortly after that went out to Afghanistan in December with forty two commando. On the 30th January 2007 forty two commandos were given the job to secure an area in Kajaki so contractors could repair the hydro electric dam. Matthew Bispham and another Marine Tom Curry, were ordered to clear an enemy held mud built building which was part of a larger compound. The two were about to enter the building when a Taliban insurgent came out and killed Marine Curry. Matthew said 'It was hand to hand fighting, which I had not done before. I shot the Taliban who had killed Tom and then had to carry and clear the building by myself. There was another Taliban in there who was also killed. I then came outside and tried to get first aid to Tom. A lot of guys were running out towards us firing at us we held the momentum, so we had to carry otherwise we would have been driven back'. Military cross was announced in the London Gazette on the 19th July 2007, also in this lot a quantity of research, to include printed card from Prince Phillip sent from Buckingham Palace dated 20th July 2007, letter from the Royal Marines Corps regimental sergeant major, letter from the senior British military adviser Major General J H Thomas DSO, letter from Major General G S Robison, one from Admiral Sir James Burnel-Nugent KCB CBE, letter from Admiral Sir Jonathon Band KCB ADC.
