Lot 812

A collection of First Day covers and stamps.

Lot 1

A pair of 19th century Dresden two-piece candelabra: removable four-arm candle holders over a female figure in classical dress holding an infant. The square bases encrusted with flowerheads and the candle holders encrusted with leaves and flowers. (47cm highest)Condition Report: Both bases are marked and one is also impressed '182' next to the blue mark, the other has '182' about 3cm away from the blue mark.  First lamp base....the extremities appear to be good order. Very minor chips to the floral encrusted base. The candlestick stem is in good condition and the cherubic figure is good. The detachable three-branch, four-light top looks in reasonable condition overall although the underneath of the leaf shaped drip pans/nozzles have suffered.   Second lamp base...(with the lot number ticket)...the fingers and heads are all intact (not off and re-affixed) and generally the base section is good. There is very minor paintwork and extremities away. The removable four light section has also had some of the undersides of the nozzles away, one or two have been repaired. One arm has been broken and repaired.

Lot 387

An 18th century oak dresser base; the large outset moulded top above three frieze drawers with mahogany crossbanding, the drawers with brass Dutch style drop handles and ovolo mouldings and with base draw linings running from front to back, raised on turned front legs united by stretchers (for restoration) (214cm wide x 48cm deep x 82cm high)Condition Report: In the Auctioneer's opinion this is a piece for professional restoration. The structure appears to be sound and the piece has come privately, the feet on the end of the front legs (which are inverted pear-shaped) have been added later and looking at the back legs there are splices about 6cm high, added to the back legs, to raise it up. There evidence that the drawers have been forced at some stage (a 4-5cm let-in piece of oak in the carcass above the escutcheons and locks has been replaced). A lot of the mahogany crossbanding on the drawers are away and needs attention. The top (made up of three planks) has marks and dents etc. commensurate with age. Some of the planks are coming away through shrinkage across the grain. Re originality of the drawer bases...first drawer looks original, the second (middle) drawer is missing approx. half of the left-hand side of the drawer base and the third right-hand drawer is composed of three planks and the middle approx. 7-8cm plank has been replaced at some stage. The locks look original.

Great Britain, Operation Bernhard forgery, 1930 20 pounds, B. G. Catterns signature, serial no. 44/M 55172, London, 20 Nov 1930, P. 330. Good Very Fine.Operation Bernhard was a Nazi operation to forge British bank notes. The initial plan was to drop the notes over Britain to bring about a collapse of the British economy during the Second World War. The first phase was run from early 1940. The unit successfully duplicated the rag paper used by the British, produced near-identical engraving blocks and deduced the algorithm used to create the alpha-numeric serial code on each note. The unit closed in early 1942 after its head, Alfred Naujocks, fell out of favour with his superior officer, Reinhard Heydrich. The operation was revived later in the year; the aim was changed from forging money to financing German intelligence operations. Instead of a specialist unit within the SD, prisoners from Nazi concentration camps were selected and sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp to work under SS Major Bernhard Krüger. The unit produced British notes until mid-1945; estimates vary of the number and value of notes printed, from £132.6 million up to £300 million.

Lot 1640

A PAIR OF MID 18TH CENTURY RED AND POLYCHROME PAINTED WINDSOR ARMCHAIRS, each with a stick back and sides below a pierced cresting with oval medallion painted with a coat of arms with motto on a banderole above MDCC Enmore LVI (for Enmore Castle 1756), the saddle shape seat painted with a crest, on turned legs joined by stretchers, height 97cm, width 70cm *The backs of the chairs are painted with the coat of arms of John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont (1711-1770) impaling that of his first wife, Lady Catherine Cecil (1719-1752) daughter of the 5th Earl of Salisbury and the seats are painted with the Perceval crest ('a thistle erect leaved proper'). The red and white pattern background decoration is derived from the coat of arms of the second Earl of Egmont. A set of similar chairs is known painted with the Perceval arms and those of Catherine Compton, Baroness Arden of Lohort Castle whom the Earl married as his second wife in 1756. Enmore Castle, Somerset was purchased by the 2nd Earl of Egmont from descendants of the Malet family who had owned it since the 12th century and he undertook considerable work on the castle in 1751-1755. The decoration of the chairs aligns with his antiquarian interests and in 'A Tour to the West of England in 1788' by Rev S. Shaw (pub'd 1789) the hall is described as having 'the walls adorned with family busts and coats of arms; painted chairs of the same'. A similar chair with decoration incorporating the arms of Catherine Compton is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert museum and others have appeared on the open market (e.g Christies 1st July 2004. Bibliography includes Cornforth J. 'Fresh As Paint'. Country Life 18 April 1991, a copy of which is included with the chairs and the journal of the Regional Furniture Society vol XVII, 2004. Provenance. Enmore Castle until a sale of the contents in 1899 (lots 266 - "four strong painted armchairs" and lot 267 "ditto") when bought by a Mrs Notley of Combe Sydenham Hall, Somerset. Combe Sydenham was bought by the the parents of the vendor and the chairs acquired from the Notley family.
