The Velocette LE (for ‘little engine’) was launched, in 150 c.c. form, at the Earls Court Show in 1948 and represented an innovative and radical design, with a drive shaft, radiator and coil ignition. Marketed as the ‘Motorcycle for Everyman’ it was, however, expensive in comparison with rivals like the B.S.A. Bantam, and sales figures were disappointing. A more powerful 192 c.c. Mk II followed in 1951 which was purchased for patrol work by over fifty British Police forces. The Mk III was unveiled in 1958 and featured an extra, fourth gear. In spite of the machine’s developed reputation for reliability and practicality production ended in 1970 when the company went into voluntary liquidation.
