A rare German World War I propaganda scarf, a bust of the Kaiser in the centre below a caption which translates as `We Want To and Must Be Victorious` over an iron cross dated 1914, 56cm x 61cm The two warships depicted are: The Sterling silver Königin Luise Initially built as a ferry for the Hamburg-America line in 1913, the Königin Luise was acquired by the German navy as a minelayer for World War I in August 1914. She was laying mines in the Thames Estuary on 5 August when she was sighted by British fishing boats, who then reported it to the Royal Navy. After being chased and fired upon by two British ships, the Königin Luise became the first German naval loss of World War I. The Goeben (Yavuz) SMS Goeben was a purpose-built battercruiser class ship, commissioned in 1912. Her first duty was to head up the German Mediterranean Division during the Balkan Wars. At the outbreak of World War I, Goeben evaded the British navy in the Mediterranean and reached Constantinople in August 1914. Later that year, Goeben was transferred to the Ottoman Empire and was renamed Yavuz, where she served out World War I in the Black Sea. She was eventually decommissioned in 1950, making her the longest serving battlecruiser/dreadnought class ship in any navy.
A spectacular opal, garnet, enamel and silver Arts & Crafts necklace made for Annie Horniman, circa 1920, the large dragon drop pave set with in excess of 300 graduated oval and heart shaped opal cabochons, with cabochon garnet eyes in green enamel surrounds, 15cm long, suspended by four chains from a cartouche section applied with three oval and one heart shaped opal cabochons, the whole drop 15cm long, on a silver back chain of interwoven figure of eight links with simple link connections between, the chain 45cm long. Provenance: Made for Annie Horniman, given to her cousin Mrs Marjorie Garrod, thence by descent. Annie Elizabeth Fredericka Horniman (1860 - 1937) was the eldest child of the famous tea merchant Frederick Horniman, who founded the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, South London. Having gone to the Slade School of Fine Art in 1882, Annie Horniman developed her interests in the theatre. In 1894, with the proceeds of a legacy from her grandfather, she financed a season of plays at the Avenue Theatre in London, bringing the plays of W. B. Yates and George Bernard Shaw to the stage for the first time. Through her friendship with Yates, Annie agreed to fund the opening in 1904 of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, as a base for the Irish National Theatre. In 1907 she purchased the Gaiety Theatre in Manchester, and it was her involvement with the Gaiety Theatre that saw the establishment of repertory theatre outside London, whereby the theatre employed a resident company of actors. Annie Horniman was famous for her eccentric life style, causing a mild sensation by openly smoking cigarettes and wearing flamboyant clothes. She was renowned for wearing the opal dragon pendant, offered for sale here, and was frequently photographed with it. Annie Horniman`s letters, papers and photographs were purchased by The John Rylands University Library of the University of Manchester in 1984. The pendant is mentioned in those papers as follows: `A bundle of items grouped together by Marjorie Garrod which relate to AEFH`s famous dragon pendant, frequently worn and commented upon, and typical of AEFH`s passion for unusual and individualistic clothes and jewellery. The pendant itself was made of oxidised silver, studded with over 300 opals and with 2 ruby eyes. .... a jeweller`s card from E. Wolfe & Co. of London, with a replacement value of £750 noted on the reverse [presumably Marjorie Garrod or Elizabeth Cade had the pendant valued at some point].`. An exhibition quality 1/4 inch scale model of a Clerget 9BF nine cylinder rotary aero engine, built by Mr J. Haworth of Morley, Leeds, from his own research, with finned cylinders, pushrod operated valves, twin distributors and twin spark plugs per cylinder with leads, the engine mounted on a tubular display frame with brass fuel tank and oil reservoir, associated pipework and shut off lever, the engine 12 inches in diameter (30.5cm), 14 inches (35.5cm) deep, bearing maker`s plate "J Haworth - Morley 08". Note: The original full size engines were designed by Pierre Clerget in 1915, and used cast iron pistons in very thin-walled steel cylinders. The high power-to-weight ratio of rotary engines meant that they were widely fitted to fighter aircraft in the First World War, including the Sopwith Camel, and a licensing agreement was reached allowing the Clerget 9B to be manufactured by Gwynnes Ltd of London. The only preserved Clerget 9B engine currently on display is at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, R.N.A.S. Yeovilton, Somerset.
A finely engineered 1/5 scale working model of a Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp R-2800 18 cylinder double row radial aero engine, to the design by Lee Hodgson, the engine with arranged 180 degree opposed intake and exhaust pushrods, direct drive with 4 cycles, overhead valves, finned cylinders, spark ignition harness with two distributors and fuelling by carburettor connected to a fuel tank and oil reservoir, the naturally aspirated engine with pressurised oil pump, fully pressurised main bearings, lubricated cam drive gear, and dry sump with scavenge oil pump, fitted with a block propeller and mounted in a black finished steel frame on a wooden base. Specification: Stroke 1 inch x 1.125 inch; Displacement 15.9 cubic inch; Compression Ratio 6.7:1; Engine 11 1/4 inches (28.5cm) in diameter, 11 3/4 inches (30cm) long (excluding carburettor). Note: Lee Hodgson was the test engineer for Pratt and Whitney. The full size R-2800 was used to power several types of Second World War fighters and bombers, notably the U.S. Navy`s F4U Corsair and Grumman F6F Hellcat, the U.S. Army Air Force`s P-47 Thunderbolt and the twin engined B-26 Marauder & A-26 Invader. In October 1940 the prototype Corsair became the first ever US fighter plane to exceed 400 m.p.h. in level flight.
