Thomas a Becket Archbishop of Canterbury. Vita et processus Sancti Thome Cantuariensis martyris super libertate ecclesiasticae. Paris: J. Philippi 27 March 1495 first edition 4to 116 leaves Gothic letter double column woodcut colophon at end seventeenth-century calf gilt stamped ''Edward Gwynn'' on upper cover and ''E.G.'' on lower cover repairs to extreme lower corner of aa5 to end affecting a few letters of bb8 and cc1 lower third of colophon leaf (cc2) renewed not affecting colophon woodcut new endpapers rebacked Footnote:First edition of the first printed life of Thomas a Becket written about 1199 by Henry Abbot of Croyland Lincolnshire who used the writings of four close contemporaries of Becket. This copy is from the library of the seventeenth-century book collector Edward Gwynn with his gilt-stamp on covers and with the signature of P. Tyrwhitt on the title. This is possibly Sir Philip Tyrwhitt (1598-1667) of Stainfield Lincolnshire. Tantalisingly little is known about Gwynn (d.1649) a lawyer who lived in chambers in the Inns of Court for twenty years with Alexander Chorley to whom he bequeathed his considerable library. Gwynn's copies of the early Shakespeare works known as the Pavier quartos and bound in a single volume were sold to Folger around 1919 and are now in the Folger Shakespeare library along with another eighteen volumes from Gwynn's library with his name gilt-stamped on the upper covers. The stamping appears to have been done one letter at a time no two letterings being identical. W.A.Jackson (Records of a Bibliographer (Cambridge MA Belknap Press 1967 p.115-119) believed Gwynn's library to have been broken up in the 1670's or 1680's but a recent Maggs catalogue posited an earlier date citing the ownership inscription of Roger Twysden 1652 in a Gwynn volume. Sir Philip Tyrwhitt's dates coincide neatly with Gwynn's but so far there is nothing to connect the two men. Goff T159; cf. Brunet V 1319; Hain 15510

Roberts David The Holy Land Syria Idumea Arabia Egypt & Nubia from Drawings made on the spot by David Roberts R.A. With historical descriptions by George Croly London: David Moon 1842-1849 3 volumes in 2 large folio 3 pictorial titles portrait map and 60 full-page and 60 half-page tinted lithographs by Louis Haghe after David Roberts tissue guards contemporary half red morocco spine gilt gilt edges slightly rubbed some foxing Note: One of the most magnificent and costly travel books of all time. Robert's monumental work was a publishing sensation when it was first published in 1842 bringing to the Victorian public panoramic and topographically accurate views of the sites of the Holy Land and Syria that up till then had been known for the most part from crude engravings. Roberts the son of an Edinburgh shoemaker and born in Stockbridge was enormously proud that subscriptions from Edinburgh amounted to more than £1200 proportionally far greater than those in London. It is very likely that this copy has been in Edinburgh since originally subscribed for in 1842. Abbey Travel 385; Blackmer 1432.

Francis Smith 1881-1961 PLACE a LISBONNE signed oil on canvas 73 by 60cm.; 28.75 by 23.625in. Place ˆ Lisbonne epitomises Francis Smith's passionate devotion to his homeland that occupied so much of his oeuvre. The familiar sensitive palette and the delicacy of the execution place this painting at the centre of the artist's achievements. Set in a small square in Lisbon light floods the composition bringing the geometric architecture of the townscape into sharp focus whilst offsetting it with the dappled shadowy foreground. As a result the most striking element of the painting is its daring attempt to balance a series of opposing forces: the hard angularity of the buildings with the soft and vibrant trees; the broad confident planes of colour with the small and delicate figures; the warm pinks with the cool pastel blues and the high vantage point against a soaring hillside. Stabilising the composition at the centre is the monument around which the rest of the image unfurls; an anchor in the eye of a maelstrom of opposing and vertiginous forces. These tensions reveal the paradox behind Smith's work: an image that at first glance appears so serene and peaceful is in fact a complex and finely balanced work of great delicacy and sureness of touch. And yet for all its complexity this work remains one of Smith's most beautiful and compelling works.
