GILL PARKER (BRITISH, CONTEMPORARY) AN EQUESTRIAN BRONZE 'MRS MOSS' DATED 1984 The brood mare depicted standing, signed and inscribed to cast, dated 1984 and numbered 1 33.5cm high, base 28cm wide Provenance: Acquired from The Sladmore Gallery by the vendor's father. With accompanying paperwork. A member of the Society of Equestrian Artists and experienced horsewoman, this was the first work produced by Gill Parker in collaboration with The Sladmore Gallery. She writes about this first visit to capture a likeness of the mare; "One day I was asked to meet at the gallery to discuss a commission for one of their clients. Edward drove me out of London but wouldn't tell me where we were going. He told me later that recognising how shy I was, he thought I would get too nervous. After about an hour he turned up the long drive towards Woburn Abbey. This was to be my first major commission and it was of course, as predicted, a horse. Not just any horse, but a famous brood mare called Mrs Moss!" The owner, Henrietta Russell, Dowager Duchess of Bedford, was delighted with the bronze and wrote in 1984: "We now have the bronze and it is a great joy to us. I know that we will have the pleasure of looking at her for the rest of our lives and future generations will know that the incredible Mrs Moss looked like as Gill has captured, so perfectly, every nuance of her being." λ GUIDO RIGHETTI (ITALIAN, 1875-1958), A RARE BRONZE MODEL 'LIÈVRE ASSIS' 20TH CENTURY The seated alert hare on naturalistic base, posthumous lost wax cast, signed to cast G. Righetti, stamped UDB (Univers du Bronze Paris) and EA I/IV 35.5cm high, base 30.5cm long Provenance: The Imogen Paine collection of rabbits Sotheby's, Gleneagles Hotel, 1-2 September 1998, lot 1015Sotheby's, Deborah, Duchess Of Devonshire: The Last Of The Mitford Sisters, 2nd March 2016, lot 262 £9,870 Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire, inherited from her father the 2nd Baron Redesdale a love for country life- for dogs, horses, livestock, agricultural shows and, perhaps most famously, chickens. She was also fond of rabbits- as her purchase of this bronze from Sotheby's Gleneagles sale in 1998 shows. Righetti was born in Milan in 1875 and drawing inspiration from Prince Paulo Troubetzkoy, a friend of the family, turned his hand to modelling and sculpting animals. Troubetzkoy was a vegetarian and animal lover- and lived surrounded by tamer animals. Righetti too seems to have been driven by a greater love for the animal world than some of his predecessors- creating a home for himself in the Hermitage of San Salvatore near Mount Erba- living and sculpting in a building alongside hens, sheep and passing wilder animals. He worked from life- the pets at home, the wilder caged animals in the zoos and the uncaged wild animals around him. Exhibiting in Italy at first- he went on to show at the 1914 Venice International Exhibition and the San Francisco World Fair in 1915. Margherita Sarfatti writing of his exhibition at the Central Art Gallery in 1920 stated :"the sculptor Guido Righetti, one of the very few Italian sculptors, who shows that he is assiduously interested and pay attention to the groupings and games of muscles and limbs of our adorable lower brothers.."Condition Report: Good and with very mild wear as per handling and age. A REGENCY CAST IRON FIRE GRATE IN THE EGYPTIAN CLASSICAL TASTE, FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURYWith triangular backplate with fan lunette corners above basket, flanked by pyramidal topped sides, on Egyptian wing capped acroteria mounted uprights with paw feet 65cm high, 96.5cm wide, 35.5cm deep Most typically such fire grates are ascribed in design to George Bullock. Whilst the Tew Park auction and his drawings for a 'Plan of stove in dining Room and Oak Study' do bear close comparison- the Egyptianesque detailing to this example suggests that other designers may have drawn on the Tomb of Agrippa in the Pantheon in Rome for their inspiration and incorporated elements as popularised by "Description de l'Égypte" (Publ. 1878-1801).Condition Report: Generally good- wear from use and cleaned and reblacked condition - internal side plate to its left hand side slightly buckledCondition Report Disclaimer

William Tassie (1777-1860) Portrait medallion of the Right Hon. Warren Hastings (1732-1818) paste mounted on glass, blue background, circular, gilt-metal mount engraved 'R.T HON.BLE WARREN HASTINGS. DIED 22.ND AUG.T 1818. AGED 86.', turned wood frame5cm diam. Provenance:From the estate of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021)Born in 1732 in Churchill, Oxfordshire, Warren Hastings was a British colonial administrator who served as the first Governor-General of India from 1773 to 1785. Hastings began his career in the East India Company, serving as a clerk in the trading posts in India. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a member of the Bengal Council in 1761. As Governor-General, Hastings was responsible for consolidating British control over India and pursued a policy of territorial expansion, annexing large parts of India, including Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. On his return to England, he was accused of corruption and abuse of power during his time in office, and in 1787 he was impeached in the British Parliament for his alleged crimes in India. After a long trial, he was acquitted in 1795 and lived in retirement until his death in 1818 at the age of 85.
An English porcelain tea bowl and saucer, inscribed in gilt Sir Francis Burdett MP, within gilt line bordersthe saucer 13.5cm diameterProvenance: From the estate of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021)The son of the Baronet of Foremark (1743–1794), Sir Francis Burdett was born in January 1770, near Repton, Derbyshire and is today remembered as a vociferous champion of reform and free speech and a passionate opponent of political corruption. Burdett’s independent nature was evident in his early years, when he was expelled from Westminster School. After his education at Christ Church, Oxford, and after travelling to France where he witnessed, first-hand, the early days of the French Revolution, Burdett entered Parliament in 1796, where he would continue to affect seismic and profound changes to British law and culture.Upon entering Parliament, Burdett was vocal and forthright in his opposition to William Pitt the Younger and as an advocate of popular rights. In addition to other causes, Burdett condemned the war in France, the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act and, in his maiden speech, accused the government of ‘oppression of an enslaved and impoverished people’. As such, Burdett rapidly became a hugely popular figure amongst the electorate. In 1810, Burdett published a series of pamphlets in support of John Gale Jones - a radical orator who had been imprisoned at Newgate for his public censuring of the government’s decision to exclude members of the press from Parliament. A warrant was soon issued for Burdett’s immediate arrest and, following a two-day standoff in which Burdett barred himself into his home, he was publicly arrested by a military cavalcade. Perhaps, unsurprisingly, public support for both Burdett and political reform, more generally, tumefied and a spate of 'Burdett and Liberty' erupted across London. The present lot is one of a number of wares that were produced around the time of Burdett’s arrest and demonstrate the widespread public support for his cause. After his release, Burdett continued to champion a number of popular causes, though his popularity never recovered to the heights of that which he achieved during the time of his arrest. Following the death of his wife, Sophia Coutts, the second daughter of the wealthy banker Thomas Coutts, the inconsolable Burdett refused all food and died just ten days later.Slight light crazing in palces, saucer with a faint hairline crack to rim

In a manuscript note, the alterations are described thusly: “I converted the train into an evening dress to wear at the Spanish Embassy in Dublin, while staying with Lady Dunsany, co Meath.
