Local Interest - John Flamsteed FRS, First Astronomer Royal, a Charles II vellum and ink manuscript indenture, recording the conveyance of land at Hazelwood (then in the parish of Duffield), Derbyshire, from Stephen Flamsteed of Derby, maltster (and signed on his behalf by his son, John) to Matthew Smith of Denby, Gent., dated 3rd August 1674 and endorsed by the purchaser 15th July 1675, 12.9cm x 38.5cm, framed; loosely inserted photograph, Derby Museums and Art Gallery Enquiry document, and a b/w photograph of the munimentStephen Flamsteed was a younger son of the Flamsteeds of Little Hallam Hall, near Ilkeston (descended out of Flamstead, Hertfordshire) settled at Derby as a maltster and built a fine Carolean partly surviving house at 27, Queen Street c. 1670. He was also a coal mine owner and had a house at Denby, to which he retired during the Civil War and where his eminent son, the Recerend John Flamsteed FRS was born in 1646. Matthew Smith, whose name survives in a row of stone built almshouses founded 1713 at The Butts, Belper, was the eldest son of Henry Smith of Whitemoor Hall, Belper and Denby by Jane Bate of Little Chester, and was born at Denby in 1636. He married Anne Gregory of the opulent Nottingham mercantile family, served as JP and in 1685 High Sheriff, dying at Whitemoor Hall in 1714, having outlived his three sons who all died unmarried.

Railwayana, Americana - Riddles (Colonel Robert Arthur "Robin" Riddles, CBE, MIMechE, MinstLE), Tour of "Coronation Scot" in U.S.A., 1939, a unique illustrated narrative compiled while Chief Mechanical & Electrical Engineer to the London, Midland, Scotland & Scottish Railway (LMS), illustrated with b/w professional and snapshot photographs of the train, its carriages, and their interiors (principally first class), both posed and in-action, and both stationery and moving (sometimes in transit), some of the professional photographs taken for advertising purposes and are modelled with 'passengers'; while the carriages sailed over the Atlantic on the ship Belpamela, the railway officials travelled on R.M.S. Royalty, The Birth of Queen Victoria's Grandson, Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg und Gotha (1884-1954) - Post Office Telegraphs, 'An Infant Duke of Albany was born last night at 25 minutes past eleven/both mother and child doing well', sent from Horatia Stafford, Claremont, Esher, Surrey, to Mrs Smith, Osborne, Isle of Wight, date stamped: East Cowes Jy 20 84, 13cm x 21.5cm, framedThe birth of Charles Edward, Duke of Albany (later Duke of Saxe-Coburg und Gotha; 1884-1954), on 19th July, 1884, was particularly poignant as his father Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, Queen Victoria's eighth child and youngest son, had died in that March of complications arising from haemophilia, leaving his wife, Princess Helen (née von Waldeck und Pyrmont), a widow at 22 years old. Succeeding to the German ducal throne of Saxe-Coburg und Gotha in 1900, Charles Edward was tragically ostracized from the British Royal Family from the start of the First World War in 1914, and this was only exasperated by the eventual Second World War of 1939.
