Xue Weng (Chinese, mid 20th century), a scroll painting of a cockatoo amid plum and magnolia blossom, signed, inscribed and dated 35th year of the Republic of China (1947), image 91cm x 29.5cm excluding border, together with a second scroll painting of a butterfly and blossom, 59.5cm x 22.5cm (2)Provenance: Lady Cripps, who during the second world war was President of the British united Aid to China Fund and in June 1946 was appointed a GBE for her services. Later that year, she undertook an extensive tour of China where she was the guest of General Chiang Kai-shek. During her tour she was invited by Mao Zedong to visit Yenan and welcomed on her arrival by Madame Jiang. The first scroll painting was gifted to Lady Cripps on a visit to the National Central University in modern day Nanjing in 1947 according to the inscription.
