‡A COLLECTION OF PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS BY PATRICK PHILLIPS, A.R.W,S., R.P. (1907-1976), 1926-29 Trained at the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting under Francis E Jackson, Charles Shannon and Glyn Philpot.1933 onwards teaching at the Byam Shaw School,1940-45 War Service, 1946-55 Co-Principal of the Byam Shaw School.1954 elected to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.1968 elected to the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours.1977 The Chantrey Bequest purchased his portrait of Mrs Carter Gifford for the Nation. Phillips’ portraits are widely held in the National Collections as well as Tate. His commissioned work included leading personalities of the age - among them the Queen Mother. Regarded by his masters and his students as a draughtsman of exceptional talent, his work, based on unerring drawing, subtlety of tone and sensitive brushwork, goes further than mere technical merit and displays a profound empathy for his subjects. Phillips was something of a naturalist, a real countryman, and his landscapes in oil and watercolour capture rapidly and with simplicity the weather and lights of England and France. Emotion. ‘This is the Key to all work that is of any consequence’. Drawing. ‘ is to my mind the simplest method of showing the structure of things... because of its simplicity and structural ability, it is of first importance to all Artists and Craftsmen’. Portraiture. ‘The essential of a portrait as opposed to a head or figure painting, is a portrayal of the character of the sitter. To make this portrayal tell to best advantage the lighting must be simple and fall fairly fully on the features, thus producing a readable pattern of tone. The colour scheme should be kept simple so that the portrait can predominate. The simpler the pose, colour and tonal design, the more the portrait will tell’...... from the artist’s notebooks PATRICK PHILLIPS ARWS RP (1907-1976) A Folio Box containing unframed pencil, ink and wash sketches, mostly figure studies and portraits, subjects include: ‘The Philatelist’; ’Kneeling female nude’; ‘A seated female Nude’; and ‘Standing male Nude’, varying sizes 15 x 11 in (38.2 x 27.9cm) and smaller; (approx 100)

Air Commodore Bridget ‘‘Biddy’’ Grundy, nee Martin OBE (1920-1998), was the daughter of Major Charles Hamilton Martin and Katharine Mary, nee Nettlefold. A close friend of the Phillips family. Witty, highly intelligent and resilient this portrait captures Biddy laying aside her professional and public persona and in a more reflective and intimate mood. Biddy had a meteoric career in the WAAF/later WRAF and was the first woman (the Director apart) to acquire Air Commodore Rank.

Lot 4

Ecclesiastical – English Civil War A Relation of the Conference between William Laud then Lord Bishop of St Davids^ now Lord Arch-Bishop of Canterbury and Mr Fisher the Jesuite by the Command of King James of ever Blessed Memorie with an answer to such exceptions as AC takes against it... London 1639. Original calf boards a little rubbed^ interior contents appear good^ folio 388pp. This was seen at the time by the increasingly entrenched Charles I as proof that his Archbishop’s doctrine was far from that of the Roman Catholics^ a vital element in his growing and continuing battle in Scotland against the Presbyterians. It did little however to absolve Laud from the nickname north of the border of ‘The Pope of Canterbury’. Religious discontent was one of the major elements in the outbreak of the Civil War three years later. This is considered the ‘second’ edition of this work – the first appearing as part two of Francis White’s ‘Replie’. This version was however greatly expanded before publication.

WWII – Nazis – the SS a complete register of the members of the SS dated December 31st 1938. Folio^ black cloth covers with embossed title in white lettering ‘Diestaltersliste der Schutstaffel’ [Seniority list of the protection staff]. An alphabetic index is at the rear^ together with some statistical information on the areas covered by the SS Divisions. It is unlikely that many other copies of this book exist. The present copy has an intriguing history: it belonged to a British SOE Agent who was sent to Nazi Germany during the early 1930s in order to infiltrate Nazi high command. He no doubt obtained this register in order to provide important information on who was in the SS and who he could therefore trust.
