Deckelschild. (1965).MoMA-Objektnummer 2677.2008.a-c. Patterson (1934-2016), Kontrabassist, Performer und Organisator, ist neben George Maciunas Mitbegründer der Fluxus-Bewegung in den 60er Jahren. 1962 organisierte er mit diesem die Wiesbadener Festspiele Neuester Musik, später bekannt als das erste Fluxus-Festival, im Städtischen Museum Wiesbaden. Im selben Jahr verlegte Patterson seinen Wohnsitz nach Paris, wo er unter anderem mit Robert Filliou "Puzzle poems" in Fillious Galerie Légitime veröffentlichte. 1963 übersiedelte er nach New York und zog sich von der avantgardistischen Kunst zurück, um ein "bürgerliches Leben" zu führen. Über "Instruction no. 2" (eine no. 1 ist nicht erschienen) äußerte sich Patterson später: "As far as I know, this will be the first performance of the piece with total audience participation. People will come to the stage - or optionally, to the bathroom - and wash their face.
