Catalogus Plantarum Angliae. 1670. Joannis Raii. Leather bound, some staining and torn front pages. On display in 43 Dover Street Add to Wish List View Wishlist NOTES A SIGNIFICANT HANDBOOK OF BRITISH PLANTS First edition. "It is now a fairly uncommon book, though this may be partly explained by one of its main purposes, that is, to be used by botanists in the field, so that many copies would probably have been used up and destroyed" (Keynes). John Ray (1627-1705), "the son of a blacksmith, became one of England's greatest naturalists. He was pre-eminently a botanist (he originated the division of plants into monocotyledons and dicotyledons), but also took up the unfinished ornithological work of his friend Francis Willughby" (Oxford Companion to English Literature, fifth edition).

Lot 4

Gerard's Herbal. 1597. Re bound. Some pages missing. Old page repairs and some staining.Title page and pages 61-64 missing.  Also cut down a little. Probably the best known English herbalist John Gerard’s monumental work, first published in 1597, has gained for its author a lasting reputation which he does not entirely deserve. Gerard’s text was largely derived from an unfinished English translation made by a Dr Priest of an earlier work, Stirpium historiae pemptades sex, by the great Flemish herbalist Rembert Dodoens (1517-85), a fact which Gerard failed to acknowledge in his preface.
