A pair of Victorian Gothic Revival gilt brass altar candlesticks by Hardman`s Medieval Art Manufactory, probably after a design by , A. W. N. Pugin, each with a broad petal-outlined drip pan above a barbed knopped hexagonal stem raised on a spreading hexafoil foot, 29cm (1 1/2in) high. Provenance: St Mary`s Convent, Hunter`s Road, Birmingham; reputedly the first pair of candlesticks made by Hardman to a design by A. W. N. Pugin, probably in 1839. The foot, stem and knop are similar to those found on a silver-gilt chalice designed by Pugin for St Mary`s College, Oscott, in 1838, traditionally his first chalice design - see , A. W. N. Pugin - Master of Gothic Revival, Bard Graduate Center, 1995 (p. 285)
