From 1959, he held the position of Head of the Chelsea School of Pharmacy for over 30 years. He was a pioneer in the field of drug testing in sport and over the years was involved in a number of high profile cases including those of Ben Johnson and Alain Baxter, as part of the IOC ( International Olympic Committee), a position he held for twenty five years. In 1978 he established the first independent laboratory at Chelsea College to test for drugs in sport. He attended both Winter and Summer Olympics supervising the testing of urine samples by the local Olympic laboratory. Professor Beckett had a lifelong enthusiasm for Philately and linked this to his attendance at sporting events throughout the world, to establish a unique collection of First Day Covers signed by competing athletes at these events, along with personal items from his attendance at these events. Provenance: These autographs were collected personally by Professor Arnold H Beckett (1920-2010) who for 20 years was a member of the IOC Medical Commission and an advisor and member of a number of other sporting bodies, and an expert on doping in sport. A great collector's item for any football or Manchester United fan.
