Lot 400

A collection of eighteen Geissler and Crooke's glass tubes, late 19th and early 20th centuries,of various designs, colours and shapes, together with a Apps' Patent Induction Coil in pine carrying case, the largest tube, 9¾in (24.5cm) long, (qty)Footnotes:The tube was invented by the German physicist and glassblower Heinrich Geissler in 1857. It consists of a sealed, partially evacuated glass cylinder of various shapes with a metal electrode at each end, containing rarefied gasses such as neon, argon, or air; mercury vapor or other conductive fluids; or ionizable minerals or metals, such as sodium. When a high voltage is applied between the electrodes, an electrical current flows through the tube. The current dissociates electrons from the gas molecules, creating ions, and when the electrons recombine with the ions, the gas emits light by fluorescence. The colour of light emitted is characteristic of the material within the tube, and many different colours and lighting effects can be achieved. The first gas-discharge lamps, Geissler tubes were novelty items made in many artistic shapes and colors to demonstrate the new science of electricity. In the early 20th century, the technology was commercialized and evolved into neon lighting.

Attributed to Umberto Bellotto (Italian, 1882-1940: A Medievalist-Style wrought iron sign for the Gran Caffè Ristorante San Marco, Piazza del Popolo, Ascoli Picenocirca 1928 the black patinated decorative panel pierced and hammered, the design depicting the Lion of Saint Mark, representing the evangelist St Mark, pictured in the form of a winged lion holding a Bible, the symbol of the city of Venice and formerly of the Venetian Republic, in the background to the left San Marco and the Basilica, and to the right a Galleon approaching Scaliger Castle on Lake Garda, the panel riveted into an angle iron frame115.8cm x 53cm, unsignedFootnotes:Umberto Bellotto, born in Venice in 1882, is particularly known for his wrought iron works, often with a neo-eighteenth-century and medievalist flavor. Active also in other sectors of the applied arts, he designed glassworks ateliers that included Vittorio Zecchin, Vetreria Artistica Barovier, Toso Fratelli, and Pauly & C.. Many of his applied and decorative arts works have been exhibited at the Biennials of Monza and Venice. On January 5th, 1928, Bishop Santarelli blessed the opening of the 'Gran Caffè Ristoratore S. Marco' on the ground floor of the Palazzo del Popolo. A real work of art that the press described as: 'an environment of first places not only in the region, but also outside, where everything offers to enjoy and think'. It is due to the genius of Umberto Bellotto, artistic director of the Spada ceramics factory, who meticulously cared for every object, every little detail, from wrought iron to ceramic tiles with over 400 different designs, from furniture to the floor, from curtains at the sales counters. He used local craftsmen, except for wrought iron, forged in his Venetian workshops. The wooden works are by the companies De Marco, Latini and Carpani; the paintings of Pagliari, the ceramics by Aldo Castelli; the architectural study of Eng. Paoletti. The sign was acquired directly by the current owner from the heirs of Gran CaffèRistorante San Marco. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lots denoted with a 'TP' will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 515

Francois Rude (French 1784-1855): A mid 19th Century patinated bronze bust of 'Tête De Gaulois (Head of a Gaul)'modelled with curling hair and beard looking up to dexter, signed RUDE and raised on a swept moulded rouge marble veined square socle base and square plinth base, 47.5cm highFootnotes:Provenance: Property of a Gentleman CollectorFootnote: Francois Rude was known for his social art including public monuments such 'La Marseillaise' or 'The Departure of the Volunteers of 1792 conceived and produced 1833-36 which captured the subject in a dynamic and emotional stylised way. Wining the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1812 he was unable to train in the city due to the Napoleonic Wars. First attracting public attention with his statue of 'Mercury Attaching His Winged Sandals' in 1828 which was still very much in the Neo-Classical tradition he quickly moved into more naturalistic expressive subjects such as 'Young Neapolitan Fisher boy Playing with a Tortoise' in 1831. By the time his statue of 'Marshall Ney' was unveiled in the Place de l'Observatoire in Paris he had completely rejected all Neo-Classical principals for sculpture with his sculpture depicting the Marshall holding a sword raised above his head and his mouth open. The monument of 'La Marseillaise' although classical in detail was however very romantic and impetuous in feeling causing his critics to rally against this work and one of his last works was 'Bonaparte Awakening to Immortality' unveiled in 1847.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lots denoted with a 'TP' will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 553

OF MARITIME INTEREST - A table decorated to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar almost certainly painted during the Edwardian periodpossibly a Victorian breakfast table converted to a table with a fixed topThe top decorated with the busts of Lord Nelson and Vice Admiral Collingwood amidst warships in conflict, all within interlocking wreaths, surrounding a compass star and the inscriptions: 'England expects this day that every man will do his duty. H.M.S. VICTORY, LORD HORATIO NELSON, THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR, H.M.S. ROYAL SOVEREIGN, VICE-ADMIRAL CUTHBERT COLLINGWOOD, A GREAT AND GLORIOUS VICTORY, 1805' within a border inscribed with a list of the British fleet: 'Dreadnought, Euryalus, Naiad, Phoebe, Entreprenante, Temeraire, Neptune, Conqueror, Leviathan, Ajax, Orion, Agamemnon, Minotaur, Spartiate, Britannia, Sirius, Pickle, Mars, Belleise, Tonnant, Bellerephon, Colossus, Achille, Polyphemus, Revenge, Swiftsure, Defense, Thunderer, Defiance, Prince', 121cm wide x 120cm deep x 75cm high, (47 1/2in wide x 47in deep x 29 1/2in high)Footnotes:It is highly likely that the offered lot was painted in 1905 in honour of the centenary of Trafalgar since numerous commemorative acts and events took place across the nation over the course of that year. However, despite this widespread patriotic activity, there was notably minimal involvement or participation from the Royal family. This was due to their desire to uphold the Entente Cordiale by not upsetting or aggravating the French, with whom Great Britain had signed this series of agreements only the previous year.Nonetheless Edward VII lent his official backing to the 'Nelson Centenary Memorial Fund' which organised the sale of Trafalgar centenary souvenirs each marked with the Royal cypher. Also, the proceeds from a gala which took place in the Royal Albert Hall on 21st October that same year went towards the aforementioned fund. This event, which incorporated the premiere of a specially commissioned film called Our Navy along with the first performance of the Fantasia of British Sea Songs by Sir Henry Wood, ended diplomatically with renditions of both La Marseillaise and God save the King. This old sale catalogue is available to view upon request and will be sent to the buyer upon their purchase of this lot.Serlby HallThe first major house constructed on the site of the 500 acre estate at Serlby in Bawtry, located on the border between South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, was Palladian in style and dated back to 1740. It was built by the renowned 18th century architect James Paine (1717-1789) on behalf of John Monckton, 1st Viscount Galway. However following his inheritance of Serlby Hall in 1751, William Monckton-Arundell, 2nd Viscount Galway, set about replacing the original Palladian building. This second architectural project was not completed until 1773, by which time the 3rd Viscount was the principal resident at Serlby. Further alterations and re-modelling, including the extension of the central block on both sides, took place in 1812 following the instructions of the 5th Viscount. In the 20th century Serlby Hall served as an auxiliary hospital during World War I and then as a prisoner of war camp throughout the Second World War. In 1971 Charlotte, who was the daughter of the 9th Viscount Galway, inherited the estate upon the latter's death and made the decision to sell Serlby. Thus the remaining contents were sold at auction the following year while the Hall itself was purchased privately in 1981.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lots denoted with a 'TP' will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Henry and Sophia Hulton were the ancestors of David Cameron, who served as Prime Minister between 2010-16. Thenceforth the current cabinets passed by descent to the current vendor's family.Bevois Mount House was built in 1723 following the instructions of Charles Mordaunt, the 3rd Earl of Peterborough. The Earl, by marrying the opera singer Anastasia Robinson the previous year, was in fact the first aristocrat in Britain to ever marry a stage performer. Mordaunt, who had a generous spirit and inquiring mind, naturally sought the company of individuals with similar interests and intellectual abilities. As a result of this a wide variety of lauded contemporary figures visited Benois Mount House, included among these were the literary and philosophical giants: Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, Voltaire and Thomas Gray. Of the many renowned people who visited the Earl of Peterborough at his Southampton property it appears Alexander Pope was the most frequent and seemingly most revered guest. It certainly helped that Pope, the creator of 'The Dunciad' and 'The Rape of the Lock', shared a passion for horticulture and also befriended the opera diva Anastasia Robinson who was the Earl's wife. With Pope's close collaboration, Mordaunt was even motivated to replace a gravel-filled hill with idyllic gardens lined with paths, one of which was later called 'Pope's Walk' in homage to the great poet. In 1734, while Pope was staying at Bevois Mount, which he had previously referred to as 'beautiful beyond imagination', he wrote a letter to the Earl of Oxford in which he described the estate as having: '... the best Sea fish and River fish in the world, much tranquility, some Reading, no Politiques, admirable Melons, an excellent Bowling-green and Ninepin alley...'And Pope also detailed the summerhouse at Bevois Mount in another letter to Arbuthnot during the same year:I write this from the most beautiful Top of a Hill I ever saw, a little house that overlooks the Sea, Southampton & the Isle of Wight; where I study, write, and have what Leisure I please.'Sadly, Pope's return to Bevois the following year was under completely changed circumstances. Both he and the Earl were in very poor health. Pope, who most of his life had a twisted body resulting from a tubercular disease that he had contracted when young, was suffering greatly and found it a struggle to travel. While the Earl, who had endured an unsuccessful operation to counteract a bout of the kidney stone, had asked his old friend to visit for the sake of some good company. Tragically Pope recounts the great pain and discomfort suffered by Charles Mordaunt in various letters he composed at that time.Following Mordaunt's death in October 1735, Pope, who had pledged to the Earl that he would come back to the Estate in order to complete the landscaping works and maintain his friendship with Lady Peterborough, certainly fulfilled this vow up until his final trip to Bevois in 1740. Also the poet wore a watch, which had been given to him by the Earl, for the remainder of his own life, even having it appropriately inscribed in honour of Mordaunt. The watch itself had originally belonged to Victor Amadeus II, King of Sardinia, before the latter had gifted it to the former. The House and its interior is wonderfully evoked in a passage taken from a publication called The Sporting Magazine in 1804:'The approach to this earthly paradise is a noble lofty stone gateway; at each extremity is a small colonnade, once adorned with two beautiful marble figures, representing Spring and Summer... After a short winding walk I entered the mansion in Mount Bevois, celebrated for its internal beauties and conveniences. In the front parlour, I found four good marble statues - Bacchus, Apollo, Diana and Meleager - with a picture said to be original portraits of Columbus and his sons... some very valuable Roman remains, one of which, an altar piece, i send for your amusement.' https://bevoismounthistory.weebly.com/Charles Sotheby, who was one of the midshipmen involved in the Battle of the Nile which took place in 1798, was another celebrated historical figure born at Bevois Mount. Towards the end of his lifetime of service within the Royal Navy, Sotheby attained the rank of Rear Admiral following notable involvement in both the Anglo-Turkish Wars and the Napoleonnic Wars, as well as participating in various campaigns to combat piracy. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TP YTP Lots denoted with a 'TP' will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
