Robert Taylor The Eagles Divide The Masterwork Drawing Fighter Pilots Edition signed by 11 WW2 pilots (4 Luftwaffe and 7 USAAF). This is the Fighter Pilots Edition number 46 / 50 published in 2012 and supplied with the original Certificate of Authenticity. The print is signed by the artist Robert Taylor and Colonel Clarence E 'Bud' Anderson, Captain William B Overstreet, Leutnant Hugo Broch KC, Oberleutnant Walter Wolfrum KC, Captain James L. Brooks, Lieutenant Colonel Clyde B. East, Colonel Art Fiedler, Colonel Joe Peterburs, First Lieutenant Clint White, Leutnant Jorg Czpionka IC and Oberleutnant Kurt Schultz IC. The print measures approximately 23. 5 x 16. 5 inches has been stored flat, out of the light and is in very good condition. Print historical detail : It had begun; the end game was inexorably in play. The final defeat of Germany and the end of Nazi tyranny was almost within sight but in the skies over Germany the defiant remnants of the Luftwaffe fought on with savage determination. Ever since the long-range American P-51 escort fighters had first appeared, the skies over the Reich had witnessed grim encounters with the Mustangs taking on the Luftwaffe as they tried to stop the heavy bombers of the USAAF reaching their targets. By early 1945 it was a losing battle, but still the Luftwaffe fought on and, in the resulting maelstrom of combat, the Mustang pilots still had their work cut out against these battle hardened, expert pilots. Robert Taylor's superb drawing, part of his much-acclaimed Graphite Series, dramatically reconstructs one such clash in early 1945 as P-51 Mustangs of the 357th Fighter Group have spotted a group of Bf109s heading their way. Without hesitation they dive head-on in an attempt to break-up the enemy formation and for the pilots on both sides the explosive encounter of close combat is suddenly upon them. Limited edition prints of this classic Robert Taylor Master Drawing have been signed over the last few years by some of the most respected USAAF Mustang and distinguished Luftwaffe pilots who duelled in those merciless skies over Europe. Since signing the prints some of these legendary names have very sadly died, making it one of the most collectible editions of recent years. . Good condition. Lot 112

* Cricket Bat. A reproduction of an early 1750s' cricket bat, probably English, (?)20th century, made from solid willow with no shoulders, blade has one curved edge and one straight with slight off-centre bevel to back of blade, indistinct name stamp stencilled to back with only beginning or end letters 'T' or 'LL' now visible, twine grooves etched on handle, 84cm (33ins) longQty: (1)NOTESThe earliest surviving cricket bats resemble a broad and curved hockey stick. Around 1750, with the advent of bowlers pitching the ball up, the straight blade was generally adopted, initially with one straight and one curved edge, as offered here. The first laws of cricket were written in 1774 and around this time the cricket bat took the shape that we recognise today, with two straight edges and shoulders below the handle. The bat offered here would appear to be a reproduction based on the early bat and possibly specially made for a mock tournament or exhibition. The clearest evidence that this is not an 18th-century bat is its short size. As the early bats were held at an angle to the body, much like a hockey stick, the early bats were approximately 109cm (43 inches) with even bats for junior players measuring approximately 96cm (38ins). The maker of this bat has, (perhaps mistakenly), made it to be held in the upright stance as the modern cricket bat, and its shorter size is indeed similar to the standard modern bat. An interesting and unusual item, nonetheless!

Lot 116

* Gambling ball. A rare 17th century ivory teetotum, English, multifaceted spherical ivory ball, one facet etched with a crown, the others incised with a number between 1 and 32, additionally inscribed 'six' beneath the numeral 6 (to differentiate from 9), dark patina from age and handling, and some superficial cracks, diameter approximately 45mm (1.75ins)Qty: (1)NOTESA rare early teetotum in very good condition, with the desirable crown motif (often absent or worn) clearly discernible. Teetotums are a many faceted gaming ball with each side numbered, akin to dice, but if made true, as denoted by the crown motif, there is an equal chance of any number turning up, which is not the case with dice. They were used for gambling and lotteries, the latter first becoming an acceptable means of raising money around 1568 during the reign of Elizabeth I when there was an urgent need of funds for repairs to the harbours and fortifications of the country, then under threat of invasion from the Spanish. Lotteries were later enshrined in law through various Acts of Parliament, becoming a popular and lucrative means of increasing government revenue and they were regularly conducted, both in London and the country, by appointed contractors. Lotteries were not confined to monetary prizes, stakes could also comprise jewellery, paintings, tapestries, silver, books, land and even animals, such as the live deer of Syon Park. English philosopher John Locke (1632-1704), refers to a 32-sided ivory ball in his 1693 publication Some Thoughts Concerning Education, suggesting a teetotum similar to that used for the Royal Oak Lottery, introduced by Charles I to fund the carrying of water to London, could be used to teach children to read.
