Circle of Eberhard Stammel, German 1833-1906- A gentleman lighting his pipe; and A woman drinking a bowl of coffee; the first oil on canvas, the second oil on board, each signed with monogram (lower right), the first dated '74' (lower right), each 24 x 20 cm., each bears partial label attached to the reverse of the frame, two (2). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The depiction of a man smoking a pipe exhibits a striking similarity to Stammel's treatment of the same composition which sold at Bonhams, California, on 11 May 2008 (lot 4047), with the present lot likely inspired by Stammel's work.
Henry Parsons Riviere, British 1811-1888- Views of Rome, including of Tiber Island; Castel Sant'Angelo; and the Constantine Arch; watercolour heightened with white on paper, each signed 'H.P. A pair of almost identical views sold at Bonhams, London, on 4 November 2003 (lot 77) for £2,400.

Circle of François Gérard, French 1770-1837- A pair of portraits depicting a lady wearing a red dress, white collar, and a patterned shawl, and a gentleman wearing a black jacket and blue and yellow striped waistcoat, each depicted quarter length, seated in a landscape, by repute Lucien Bonaparte and his wife, Alexandrine de Bleschamp; oil on canvas, the first 64.6 x 53.7 cm., the second 64.5 x 54 cm., a pair (2) (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: This portrait pair is highly reminiscent of Gérard's portraits, often featuring elegant, fashionably-dressed sitters in expansive, Romantic landscapes. The present paintings therefore reveal a debt to a number of Gérard's works, including to his portrait of Eugène-Adélaïde-Louise d'Orléans which was offered at Poulain-Le Fur-Sotheby's, on 3 June 1999 (lot 795), and his depiction of Comte Du Plessis de Grénédan, which sold at Pescheteau-Badin-Godeau-Leroy & De Ricqlès, Drouot-Richelieu, Paris, on 21 June 1999 (lot 124).
Giacomo Guardi, Italian 1764-1835- A pair of Venetian views, depicting the Arsenal and the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo; each watercolour and bodycolour on paper, each signed 'Giacomo de Guardi' verso, the first inscribed 'Veduta dell'esterno dell'Arsenal Veneto / all 'Ospedalletto in SS. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present Venetian scenes are characteristic works by Giacomo Guardi, executed in a distinctive style which was nevertheless heavily informed by the work of the artist's father, Francesco Guardi (1712-1793). Like his father, Giacomo Guardi specialised in Venetian vedute of which the present paintings are typical examples, depicting views which the artist treated on multiple occasions. Indeed, an almost identical view of the Arsenal is held in the collection of the Morgan Library & Museum, New York [1996.24], and another of the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Looking Toward the Scuola di San Marco, can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York [1975.1.348].

Ivory submission reference: Z95Y8D85. Note: The present portrait may depict Mark Singleton (1762-1840), an Anglo-Irish politician who twice served as MP for Eye (1796-99 and 1807-1820) and also as MP for the borough of Carysfort in County Wicklow in 1820. He also served in the British Army in the 1780s, becoming an ensign in the First Foot Guards in 1782, and a major in the Suffolk volunteer cavalry. Frank Henry Mason, RBA RI, British 1875/76-1965- Columbus discovering America; pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour on paper, signed 'Frank H MASON' and indistinctly dated (lower left), bears partial old label attached to the backing board, 32.8 x 48.2 cm. (ARR). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Mason was celebrated for his maritime, coastal, and shipping scenes, and he also produced a number of iconic art deco railway posters. Hailing from a naval family, he enlisted as a cadet on the naval school ship HMS Conway in Birkenhead in 1888, after which he spent some years at sea, working as an engineer for steam-powered ships. Despite no early formal artistic training, Mason then enrolled in the Scarborough School of Art, going on to work as a professional artist. He co-founded the Staithes Art Club in 1901, an artistic colony based in the North Yorkshire fishing town of Staithes. The present work is a striking departure from the artist's more accurate maritime studies, instead portraying a fanciful historical scene, depicting Christopher Columbus' first sighting of the 'New World' in 1492.

Note: The present work depicts the Right Reverend John Charles Hill (1862-1943), the first Suffragan Bishop of Hulme from 1924 to 1930, before which post he held curacies in Kensington and Rotherham and served as Rector of Halesowen and Rural Dean of Bury. A number of photographic portraits of Hill are held by the National Portrait Gallery [NPG x159148].

Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS, British 1769-1830- Portrait study of a lady, identified as Mrs John Hodgkin; black, white, and sanguine chalk on canvas laid down on card, bears label inscribed 'Sketch for a portrait (which was never finished) / of Mrs John Hodgkin / {nee Elizabeth Rickman / of Wellingham. Lewes. Sussex} / by Sir Thomas Lawrence. P.R.A / (given to me at Shelleys, Lewes, by my father / John Hodgkin in July 1873 / signed Alfred Hodgkin) / acquired by me from my brother Alfred Hodgkin / in 1896 signed Howard Hodgkin / Copied from Back of picture' attached to the backing board, bears further inscription to the reverse of the card, 30.6 x 28.5 cm. Note: The present delicate drawing is a refined example of Lawrence's portrait studies, which the artist often produced as preparatory sketches for the large, flamboyant swagger portraits for which he is most renowned. Similarly delicate drawings include Lawrence's portrait studies of William Sotheby and Anne Wellesley, both of which are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery [NPG 3955 and NPG 2665 respectively]. The present work reputedly depicts Elizabeth Hodgkin, née Rickman, who was married to the calligrapher and grammarian John Hodgkin (1766-1845), the first important member of the prominent Quaker family. Significant descendants of John and Elizabeth include the physician Thomas Hodgkin (1798-1866), the physiologist Alan Hodgkin (1914-1998), and the artist Howard Hodgkin (1932-2017).
Sir George Hayter, British 1792-1871- Portrait of Charles Elphinstone Fleming in profile, preparatory sketch for 'The House of Commons'; oil on board, bears label for Winsor & Newton, Rathbone Place, verso, 35.5 x 30.3 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Son of the 11th Lord Elphinstone, Charles Elphinstone Fleming, also spelt Fleeming, (1774-1840) entered the Navy as a young man, and by the age of 20 had reached the rank of Commander. Fleming served in both the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and subsequently entered politics. He was elected a member of Parliament for the constituency of Stirlingshire on 13 January 1802. This present work is likely a study for Sir George Hayter’s expansive oil The House of Commons, 1833, which is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery [NPG 54]. Hayter depicts the first meeting of the House of Commons following the 1832 Great Reform Act and the subsequent general election that produced a landslide majority for the Whig Government. The picture includes nearly four hundred identifiable figures, most of which are MPs, like Charles Elphinstone Fleming. A number of other head studies for sitters in this group portrait are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, such as one of Charles Wood [NPG 5580], Sir Robert Harry Inglis [NPG 4968], and Sir George Elliot [NPG 2511]. As Principal Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria, Hayter was best known for his portraits and large works of important royal events. He did not receive an official commission to paint the House of Commons, but was a staunch supporter of the reform movement, and many of his patrons were prominent Whig politicians and aristocrats. In Hayter’s finished work Fleming is positioned on the left-hand side, towards the window, seated in the back row. His profile matches that of this sketch. Fleming died in 1842 as an Admiral of the Blue.

Provenance: Private Collection, UK.
William Bell Scott, Scottish 1811-1890- The Garden of Eden; Angel; The Nativity; and There shall be no more death...; etchings on paper, each after William Blake, each signed 'W.B Scott' (within the plate, lower right), and 'William Blake, inv:' (within the plate, lower left), 22.7 x 16.4 cm. and smaller, four (4). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Working against the backdrop of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Scott was closely associated with various prominent artists of the Victorian period, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) and Arthur Hughes (1832-1915). He worked as the Principal of the Newcastle School of Art between 1843 and 1864, and, in this capacity, was one of the first artists to record the development of the Industrial Revolution, which, over the course of the 19th-century transformed the city of Newcastle. His oeuvre was varied and he executed a large body of works exploring historical and religious themes, as well as the industrial revolution and modern society. The present works exhibit Scott's skill as an etcher, depicting scenes after Blake's own original illustrations.
