(1) * The author was born in Cork, an Irish lawyer, and a Liberal Member of Parliament for Mallow, Co. Cork, in the English House of Commons. He was instrumental in plans to stamp out the Fenians, and responsible for the arrest of leader John O'Leary, and Thos. Clarke Luby. He had one of the most valuable libraries in Ireland, part of which fetched £11,000 at auction in 1890. His eldest son, also Sir Edward, was a founding member of the Arts & Crafts Society of Ireland in 1894 & world Authority on Irish Bindings.
