The biographical summary of Camões that Mariz outlines in his introduction was the first news about the Poet's life and contains almost all the data that is known about his life today. Copy with slight browning and other imperfections: excessive cropping, without affecting the current titles; restoration with adhesive paper on the outer edge of the cover sheet, without loss of support; rudimentary marginal restoration on the sixth preliminary sheet; last page handled, with old restoration, affecting about 30 letters in the final four lines (rebuilt by hand) along the outer margin. Binding from the 19th century, in full sheepskin, with endpapers in printed paper; weak joints. [1751].- XI, [1], 16, 388, [2] p.: 1 retrato; 20 cm.- E., First edition of one of the most important texts of the Pombaline reform of education in Portugal. Luís António Verney (1713-1792), son of French parents, but born in Lisbon, maximum exponent of the Enlightenment in Portugal and one of the most famous Portuguese "foreigners", studied at Santo Antão College in Lisbon and at the Congregation of the Oratory, before getting a degree in Theology at the University of Évora. Ownership manuscript of the time, on the title page: Coll: Anglor: Ulyssip: — Preston. Small marginal cut in the last 10 sheets. Otherwise, in a very clean copy with large margins, preserving the rare portrait of the author with the subscription Nolly Pinx-Sc. (Ernesto Soares, História, 1368). Remarkable binding of the period, in “vieux rouge” shagreen, slightly worn and with a slightly dehydrated spine; covers with elaborate loose tooling lace (dentelle), with the coat of arms of Portugal, gold-engraved in the reserve of the central finial; the endpapers are preserved in marbled paper, probably from the 19th century. Posthumous edition by the author's nephew, Gil Nunes de Leão. Variant with error in the first word of the title, later corrected. The last two sheets have the same number 161. Copy slightly cropped, but clean, with good margins. White seal of a foreign religious institution, on the first and last pages. BARROS, João de; COUTO, Diogo do.- Da Asia de João de Barros e Diogo de Couto.- Nova edição.- Lisboa: Na Regia Officina Typografica, 1778-1788.- 24 vols: il.; 16 cm.- E., Complete set of the beautiful edition of the Decadas printed at the Oficina Régia. The four "Decades" by João de Barros are part of the first eight volumes, followed by a general index (and biography) and illustrated with three portraits (author, Prince Henry and Afonso de Albuquerque) and five folding maps; also the remaining nine decades of Diogo do Couto, illustrated only with his portrait, are presented in 14 volumes plus the respective index. In 1808, António Lourenço Caminha published a volume with unpublished works by Diogo do Couto, which this collection does not include. It should be noted that the Tenth Decade is now printed for the first time. Very clean set, with all portraits and maps, covered in 19th century bindings, full sheepskin, with mottled patina with smooth spines. Inocêncio, III, p. 322 and II, p. 154.

With the exception of the preliminary sheets, the first lines of the text (p. 1), the colophon (p. cccj) and the current titles and first line of the final Tavoada, all the rest of the text is composed in Gothic rotunda characters. Lucan would later participate in the failed conspiracy against the Emperor Nero, with whom he was a close friend, having been arrested and driven to suicide. The Spanish translation is by Fr. Martin Lasso (1499-1564), Spanish humanist, born in Oropesa (Toledo), secretary to D. Mencía de Mendoza, Duchess of Calabria, Marquise of Cenete and Countess of Nassou. Title printed in black and red, framed in a xilography engraving with Renaissance and architectural elements. The text is entirely composed in Gothic characters. On the back of the last page, an extensive colophon: “Aqui se acaban los diez libros de las guerras civiles que compuso en verso heroyco el famoso poeta Lucano [...]. Imprimieronse en la insigne ciudad de Lisbona a xx de mayo de mil y quiñientos e quarente y uno años: por Luys Rodriguez librero del Rey nosso señor” Title page with two old ownerships: one on the front (fray Ju[an] de Miravilla), another on the back (illegible). Small marginal stain on the first and last leaves; minor marginal restoration on folio lxxxi; occasional minor blemishes. Otherwise, an example with slight browning, but clean. The copy presents the following 19 prints separately printed, fresh and well preserved (those of the first volume in copperplate and the remaining xylographies): Volume I - Saint Helena, Cochin, Quiloa, Cananor, Sofala, Goa, Malacca, Ormuz, Chaul, Vasai and Diu; Volume II - Island of Mozambique, Damão, Manar, Mangalor, Onor and Bargalor; Volume III - Muscat and Macau. The collation of each volume is as follows: I - [32], 396, [42] p; volume II - [8], 968, [2] p. III - [8], 564, [6] p. The three volumes also feature three copperplate printed frontispieces (integrated into the opening sections) and numerous copperplate figures and xilographies in the text, depicting viceroys and other historical figures. Although the bibliographies and catalogues consulted do not provide rigorous indications as to the number and distribution of illustrations, we are not aware of any copy with a greater number of engravings. Anno. 1559.- [4], CLXXIIII, [2], LIIII f.; 19 cm.- E., First edition of a classic work of devotion, written in Portuguese, by a Dominican who left us a vast work that was reprinted multiple times, at least, until the end of the 19th century. Luís de Granada (1504-1588) lived in Portugal for the last 47 years of his life, he was confessor to King D. João III, Queen D. Catarina and King Cardinal D. Henrique. Bibliographer António Palau dedicates more than a thousand entries to it in about 40 pages of his “Manual del librero hispano-americano”. The text is almost entirely printed in Gothic rotunda characters. The thirteen sermons have their own title page and pagination. On the back of the last pages of each of the parts, the mark of the printer João Blávio de Colónia. Copy with slight browning, sometimes accentuated and occasional old marginal notes, harmed by the edging. Recent binding, full rigid parchment. Samodães, 1458. Palau, 107874. BN (16th century), 439. The prints, printed in black and sepia, represent Norwegian localities, landscapes and customs and preserve the cellophane separators with browning, occasionally affecting the adjacent text sheets (sometimes with strong browning). Cover and first leaf with a slight water stain (tidal). Binding of the period, entirely red crushed morocco, slightly worn and flayed, with gold tooling, with romantic tooling, on the spine and on the covers that present, in the centre, the coat of arms of Norway. Keep the double endpapers in silver paper, slightly oxidized. Gilt edges.

Venetian edition from the last quarter of the 16th century, the third with the comments and additions of Daniel Barbaro (1513-1570), a Venetian humanist and diplomat, friend of Palladio, Pietro Bembo and Torquato Tasso (the two previous editions date from 1556 and 1567 ). Barbaro, who was assistant to the Patriarch of Aquileia and portrayed by Veronese, represented the Republic of Venice at the Council of Trent. Illustrated edition with more than a hundred xilograpy figures in the text, most of them full-page, two of which are folders. Copy slightly handled, with some underlining and annotations of the time, especially in the first and last two books. Title page and last 10 sheets with some stains and irregular edges. Accrescentada com outras chegadas por varias partes, com hum Mapa do Thesouro do Gram Mogôr levado de Hispahan pelo mesmo Schah.- Lisboa Occidental: Na Officina de Antonio Correa Lemos, 1740.- 19, [1 br.] p.; 20 cm.- E., First edition [and only?] of a report recounting the military campaign of the Shah of Persia, Thamas Kouli Khan (1688-1747), against the Mughal Empire of South Asia. The pamphlet includes not only a translation of the original Persian, written in Delhi by Voulton in 1739, but also other documents and a description of the Mughal treasure (Map of the Spoils) captured in the expedition (p. 16/17), including the imperial throne studded with diamonds. Little is known about the author, apart from having deserted the French army in Pondicherry (India) to enlist in the Persian forces. Last leaf with minor imperfections. Recent binding, full sheepskin. Leaflet not registered in the consulted bibliographies. With an appendix, containing the scientific and other observations.- The second edition.- London: John Murray, 1821.- 2 vols.: il.; 26 cm.- E., Sir William Edward Parry (1790-1855), English explorer, born in Bath, became famous for his travels in the Arctic, in an attempt to find the famous Northwest Passage, a feat that would only be achieved in 1906 by the Norwegian Roald Amundsen. The collation of the two volumes is as follows: I - [8], XXIX, [3], 310, [2], clxxix, [1] p.: XX engravings and maps; II - XXVI, [1], 186, [2], 151, [1] p.: [11] engravings and maps. Complete copy, with all 31 illustrations, according to the respective indexes (except in print XV, next to the title page and in the first map, on p. XXIV), nine aquatints (vol. I), six steel engravings (vol. II), 10 maps (5 splits) and six engravings with profiles of Arctic levels (1 splits). Copy slightly trimmed, with some browning, but generally clean. Cut at the fold of the fold-out map on p. 29, resulting from the trim; map XVIII badly folded; some imperfections along the backbone on the first and last leaves of each volume. White stamp from the J.G. Mazziotti Salema Garção Bookstore, on both front pages. Recent bindings, complete in green morocco, with closed panels on the smooth spines, rolls on the squares and top gilt edges. Protective cases.

(Rainha de Portugal).- Mes dessins = Os meus desenhos.- Paris; Londres: Le Goupy; Maggs Bros., 1927-1928.- 2 vols.: muito il.; 40 cm.- E., One of the mythical books of the first half of the 20th century, entirely lithographed and calligraphed, presenting the drawings with a very special charm. Its product was destined for the National Assistance to Tuberculosis, an institution founded by Queen D. Amélia of Portugal, in 1899. The Count of Sabugosa, a great and erudite bibliophile, directed the edition, who did not see the work completed. The first volume with the subtitle “Mes endroits préférés”, presents the following justification: “Cet album a été tiré à deux cent cinquante exemplaires numerotés. Nº 92. Exemplaire imprimé pour O Conde de Castro Guimarães”. The second volume, subtitled “Art et archéologie”, had a circulation of 375 copies (this one with the number 103) and presents the name Eugénio Brandão de Mello added in ink. First volume take with missing illustrations 14, 29, 32, 34 and 83, of the 119 it should contain (print 115 with small marginal damage); the second is complete with 100 lithographed illustrations. Loose-leaf copy, with the parchment portfolios, proper to the edition, missing the ivory clasps, but retaining the parchment straps.

Antonio de Solis (1610-1686), was born in Alcalá where he did his first university studies; later he was appointed official of the Secretary of State by Filipe IV and chief chronicler of the Indies by D. Maria of Austria. Illustrated edition with two maps (Mexique Environs du Lac Mexique) and 12 copperplate prints, 10 of which are folders. Complete and clean copy, keeping the engravings well folded. In addition to the first four pages, the manuscript includes: a decorated strip, bordered on f. 5; about 40 large initials illuminated in red, blue and gold (±54x43 mm) and another 40 smaller ones (3 lines); 10 large coats of arms, one at the beginning of each of the texts about the different families (except the first) . Restorations and patches on parchment, on the lower outer corner of all leaves from folio 9 to the end; frontispiece with signs of wear; slight trimming, with tangential damage to some annotations on the margin; first sheet (blank) with fungal stains. Ex-libris of António Capucho. Bound in blue velvet, probably not contemporary, with the spine remade in sheepskin; covers with silver application with rocaille motifs: four corners, an image of the Virgin (top cover) and the insignia of the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela(?); keeps both clasps intact. Le Mercier, 1740.- [2], 22 p.: XIII gravuras; 63 cm.- E., Original edition, printed on heavyweight paper, in maximum folio format, of a sumptuous “party book” published on the occasion of the wedding of Louise-Elisabeth of France (1727-1759), eldest daughter of King Louis XV, with Infante Filipe, of Spain (1720-1765). The 12 typed sheets include a title page, with a large vignette with the coat of arms of the city of Paris, and the text with the description of the festivities, at the beginning of which is another large vignette (31x16 cm) representing Paris and the festivities on the Sena River. Then follow 13 copperplate prints (8 double and 5 full page), opened in copper plate by Jean-François Blondel, according to originals by himself, as well as by Salley, Rousset et Gabriel. The first part (p. 1 to 16) contains the description of the festivals in the city, as well as the fireworks; the second (p. 17 to 22) describes the gala that took place at the “Hotel de Ville” in Paris, on the night of the 30th to the 31st of August. The most spectacular engraving (planche IX) is, without a doubt, the one representing the “Veue générale des décorations, illuminations et feux d’artifice...”. Copy with slight browning and slight handling; small marginal tear in print VII, without lack of support; prints IX, XII and XIII with some imperfections along the folds; minor restoration on the back of the last print. Modern ex-libris by E. Mareuse. Contemporary binding, in full sheepskin, with some wear, a creased corner and some damage to the spine; peripheral gold ornamental border, with florets on the corners and circles on the squares.
