Parachute Training with the US Green Berets. He would see action, firstly in the Aden Crisis On a 16 man night patrol, (his enemy were the Arab Tribesman of the National Liberation Front), they came across a goatherd, after being called up to translate, this happened! (extract from No Mean Soldier by P McAleese..)'We assumed everything was going according to plan, and moved on carefully, the moon was not yet up and it was so dark in the narrow wadi I could only just see the rock walls rearing up beside us, five minutes later Dave Haley(Sgt) whispered 'Pete come up' there's some more chappies down here! I padded up to Dave, to speak to them and made out the dark shapes of a group of shepherds lying on the ground ahead, just as i started to speak, I saw one of them shift on his side, it was probably the way he moved which warned me and I thought this is never right, the Arab shot Dave Haley full in the chest, he should have shot me as I was the closest, but I was standing to one side......Dave collapsed badly wounded and I shot the Arab six times, then all hell broke loose. 'McAleese would later serve again in Aden and would become one of the first Parachute Reg't/SAS members to free-fall parachute into a 'hot zone' with Operation Snowgoose 'Radfan Emergency', McAleese served in Bahrain and Cyprus and served in Borneo with the SAS 16th Air troop (D Sqdn) being involved in the gruesome 'Jungle Warfare' of that conflict. It would be fair to say that when McAleese left the British Army in 1969 he had already seen plenty of action with the Regiment. He worked in the lucrative Industry of the North Sea Oil Rigs, but once a soldier, always a soldier and in 1975, this was all to change with a new career as a 'mercenary' fighting in the Angolan Civil War, fighting on behalf of the National Liberation Front of Angola, even assuming Command of the Formation after the Capture of 'Costas Georgiou'. In early 1977 he went to Rhodesia, where he enlisted with the Rhodesian Special Air Service Regiment, being assigned to A Sqdn, with the rank of a Non-Commissioned Officer, later in 1979 he joined the British South Africa S Police 'Special Branch' operating in South Rhodesia and after the fall of Rhodesia in 1980 he enlisted with the South Africa Defence Forces 44, Parachute Brigade, in which he served as Colour Sgt. In the early 80's he was instrumental in the creation of a new Pathfinder Reconnaissance unit, and served in the South Africa Border War, in the mid 1980's McAleese set up home in Pretoria and became employed with the COIN Security group, a Military/Police private contractor based in South Africa. He would go on to be severely injured in a near-fatal Parachute Display jump and would return to the UK. At the end of the 1980's he spent two years working for Government forces in the Columbian Drug Wars conflict, being involved in a covert Operation to locate and 'deal with' Pablo Escobar, he also went onto work in Moscow, Russia, as a Bodyguard Training Instructor and also undertook Security work in Algeria and later Iraq for several years, the recipient also ran a Public House in Birmingham, 'The Gunmakers Arms'. Peter McAleese was once quoted....'I'm just an ordinary person, who happened to find himself doing extraordinary things' and there is no doubt that this group represents a unique insight to the 'tough' world of being a professional soldier and its combination of awards is almost unique, the recipient not only served his country with 'distinction but led a very colouful military career throughout...the lot also consists of the following... Henri Honoré Giraud (18 January 1879 – 11 March 1949) was a French general and a leader of the Free French Forces during the Second World War until he was forced to retire in 1944. Born to an Alsatian family in Paris, Giraud graduated from the Saint-Cyr military academy and served in French North Africa. He was wounded and captured by the Germans during the First World War, but managed to escape from his prisoner-of-war camp. During the interwar period, Giraud returned to North Africa and fought in the Rif War, for which he was awarded the Légion d'honneur. Early in the Second World War, Giraud fought in the Netherlands. In May 1940, he was again captured by the Germans, but made another successful escape from captivity in April 1942 after two years of careful planning. In January 1943, he took part in the Casablanca Conference along with Charles de Gaulle, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Original vintage World War Two poster by the notable British cartoonist and illustrator Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird; 1887-1965), one of the posters from the popular Careless Talk Costs Lives wartime propaganda series issued by the Ministry of Information - "But of course it mustn't go any further!" Great image of two men talking in their train carriage with the legs of Hitler and Goering peeking out from the overhead luggage rack above them. Cyril Kenneth Bird CBE (17 December 1887 – 11 June 1965), known by the pen name Fougasse, was a British cartoonist best known for his work in Punch magazine (of which he served as editor from 1949 to 1953) and his World War II warning propaganda posters. He also designed many posters for the London Underground. Bird was born in London on 17 December 1887, the son of Arthur Bird, a company director. He was educated at Cheltenham College and King's College London (B.Sc). While at King's College he attended evening art classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic and at the School of Photo-Engraving in Bolt Court. He was seriously injured at the Battle of Gallipoli during World War I and invalided out of the British Army. Bird first contributed to Punch in 1916, while convalescing, and also contributed to several other British newspapers and magazines, including the Graphic and Tatler. His pen name was based on the fougasse, a type of mine. As one of the best known cartoonists of the time, he was one of 170 authors who created doll-sized books exclusively for Queen Mary's Dolls' House; his illustrated verse tale, written on postage stamp-sized pages, was published as a regular-sized hardback in 2012 by the Royal Collection and Walker Books. In the course of the 1920s and 1930s, his drawings evolved from the traditionally representational to an innovative, spare, style that was both unique and popular, featuring in many advertising campaigns as well as in magazine editorial. He became art editor of Punch from 1937 to 1949, then editor until 1953. He was the only cartoonist ever to edit the magazine. During World War II, he worked unpaid for the Ministry of Information, designing humorous but effective propaganda posters including the famous "Careless Talk Costs Lives" series. For this work he was awarded the honour of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1946. He illustrated and co-wrote several humorous books with W. D. H. McCullough. These included the very successful Aces Made Easy – or Pons asinorum in a nutshell, on the subject of contract bridge, in 1934, and You Have Been Warned – A Complete Guide to the Road, in 1935. In the mid 1950s, he taught at the Christian Science Sunday School in the Sloane Square church, which has since been converted into the Cadogan Hall concert hall. He died in London, aged 77. Since 2009 his cartoon of a butler carrying a tray has been used to illustrate the front page of British Airways' First Class menus, continuing an association with the airline which goes back to the 1930s when Fougasse penned advertising posters for BA's forerunner, Imperial Airways. Condition: Excellent condition.. Country of printing: UK, designer: Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird, size (cm): 32x20.5, year of printing: 1940s.

Bastien is well known for his grand Panorama of the Yser Front in 19th century tradition, a painting that measured 115 meters in length and 14 meters in height and was initially exhibited in Brussels. In the mid 1920s, a permanent building was constructed in Ostend, Belgium to house the Panorama along with a multitude of props and decor. The intention of moving the Panorama to Ostend was to capture a share of British war-tourism, since most British coming to visit relatives' war graves arrived by steamer in Ostend before proceeding to the area of the Ypres Salient. The Panorama opened at Ostend in 1926. The sketch in the poster, by the artist, features the burning and shell-blasted Cloth Hall in the First World War (1914), a medieval building in Ypres, Belgium. Condition: Good condition, staning . Country of printing: UK, designer: Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird, size (cm): 32x20.5, year of printing: 1940s.
