The earliest traces of civilisation in the Indian subcontinent are to be found in places along, or close, to the Indus River. Excavations first conducted in 1921-22, in the ancient cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, both now in Pakistan, pointed to a highly complex civilization that first developed some 4,500-5,000 years ago, and subsequent archaeological and historical research has now furnished us with a more detailed picture of the Indus Valley Civilization and its inhabitants. The Indus Valley people were most likely Dravidians, who may have been pushed down into south India when the Aryans, with their more advanced military technology, commenced their migrations to India around 2,000 BC. Though the Indus Valley script remains undeciphered down to the present day, the numerous seals discovered during the excavations, as well as statuary and pottery, not to mention the ruins of numerous Indus Valley cities, have enabled scholars to construct a reasonably plausible account of the Indus Valley Civilization.Size: L:120mm / W:45mm ; 778gProvenance: From the private collection of a Central London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/European art market before 2000.

The Merovingians (476-750 AD) were one such group and they are traditionally reckoned as the "first race” of the kings of France.Size: L:15.9-25.8mm / W:7.6-16mm ; 5.35gProvenance: Private UK collection; From an old British collection formed in the 1990s

The oldest Roman lamps date to the third century BC when the Romans adopted the idea from the Greek colonies of Southern Italy. As the empire grew, the manufacture of lamps increased dramatically, as did the variation in decoration. Common decorative themes included gladiators in combat, mythological scenes, and animals. Original vintage WWI recruiting poster published by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee reading 'Fight for Freedom with the Strength of Free Men' with the text printed in white against a green background. Printed by Roberts & Leete Ltd., London. Tasked with boosting enlistment in the armed forces, the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee occupied a central place in the government€â„¢s wartime communications machinery. Although the technology to enable the relatively inexpensive mass production of high quality images had been in existence for over a century, the First World War saw the first extensive use of posters for propaganda purposes. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee (PRC) was a thirty member body organized by political party organizers, under the supervision of the War Office, with the express aim of aiding the raising of troop numbers in Britaina€â„¢s volunteer army. The main modes of appeal were through mass recruiting rallies and through posters and pamphlets that encouraged enlistment. Within a few weeks of the outbreak of the war the designs of poster began to incorporate striking graphic images. Some 200 different posters were produced and distributed by the PRC over the course of the War. War posters were intended to be ephemeral and never meant to be archival or historical documents. Yet, because of the content of the messages they projected they have become an important resource by which we can today explore the mind set of those who believed passionately in the rightness of the cause and the necessity to wage War between 1914 and 1918. **Please note this vehicle is not exempt from the ULEZ charge as incorrectly stated in the catalogue**Just like any other Taxi - air conditioning, floor lighting, walnut dashboard, intercom, chrome handles, Alpine sound system and 1,581 miles from new - well, perhaps not. Offered here is a 19 year old, purpose-built London Taxicab that has covered a mere 1,581 miles from new. The vehicle was owned from new by Sultan Qaboos of Oman as part of his vast vehicle collection in London and was first registered in 2003. It's a London Taxi International TXII Gold model which was a top of the range model at the time and has the advantage of full air-conditioning front and rear, walnut dashboard, chrome grille and door handles and intercom system. At further expense a centre console was fitted in the rear to house a fully remote, high-quality Alpine sound system, and an occasional fold-down passenger seat in the front. The rear compartment also boasts floor lighting and a fold-down wheelchair access ramp. This taxicab looks, drives and smells as you would expect for what is, essentially, a new car. Always kept in heated garages, it has had occasional use only, yet has always been well maintained regardless of how infrequently used. The taxi comes with good service history and whilst it has never been used as a London taxicab, interestingly it is exempt from the city's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charge.SpecificationMake: LONDON TAXISModel: INTERNATIONALYear: 2003Chassis Number: SCRT4B6ME3C153410Registration Number: LF03 PPYTransmission: AutomaticDrive Side: Right-hand DriveClick here for more details and images
Joining the Edwards Collection in 2004 this delightful R is one of just 544 right-hand drive cars and finished in classic colours. This Collection is offered by the family of the late J. Anthony Edwards whose passion for Rolls-Royce and Bentley motorcars spanned decades. With business success in his thirties, Tony as he was universally known, bought a Bentley S1 that started his enthusiasm that led to owning virtually every subsequent model of Rolls and Bentley since. Tony even passed his advanced driving test in a 1996 Bentley Brooklands at the age of 75! At the age of 80 his passion was still undiminished when he exchanged a Phantom Coupé for a new Wraith. The cars that Tony loved to drive remained in the collection, some retained by the family, and these four cars are a testament to his diligent maintenance, each on the button, for the next custodian to enjoy as he did.Although launched at the Geneva Salon of 1991, many elements of the John Heffernan/Ken Greenley-penned Continental R had been seen at the same event as far back as 1984, when Bentley unveiled their `Project 90' concept car; a suitably enthusiastic reception leading the company to develop the car for production. Clearly, the Sultan of Brunei approved of the end result, as he bought the 1991 show car at the exhibition. The new car was based on the Turbo R floor pan and powered by that model's 6.75-litre turbocharged V8 engine, which was believed (Crewe never quoted horsepower figures back then) to produce in the region of 325bhp fed through the, then new, four-speed GM 4L80-E transmission.Whatever the power output, it was sufficient to give a top speed of some 150mph and a 0-60mph acceleration time of around 6.6 seconds - no mean feat for a car weighing in at some 2.5 tonnes and the best of any Bentley in its day. Unlike all other Bentleys since the S3 of 1965, its body was unique to the marque and not shared with any model of Rolls-Royce. All Continental Rs were finished and trimmed by Rolls-Royce’s Mulliner Park Ward subsidiary and carried MPW builder’s plates, with the bodies assembled by hand from machine-pressed panels. The Continental R was produced from 1991 to 2003, during which time some 1,292 of these exclusive motor cars found comfortable homes, with just 544 supplied in right-hand drive. The accompanying factory build-sheets for this 1998 Bentley Continental R confirms the delivery in Brooklands Green with single coachline in Sandstone, matching the Sandstone leather interior and Spruce green top-roll. Supplied by Broughtons of Cheltenham, it was registered to the first of just two former keepers on 1st August 1998. One of the few Bentleys in Tony’s collection, it joined its Crewe stablemates on 24th April 2004. Used often but sparingly, and maintained with the usual diligence, the car is presented today with an odometer reading of 46,058 miles at the time of cataloguing. The history file includes the aforementioned factory build-sheets, bookpacks, service book, V5C and previous MOT Certificates, the most recent of which is advisory free and valid until the 24th September 2023.SpecificationMake: BENTLEYModel: CONTINENTALYear: 1998Chassis Number: SCBZB15C0WCH63109Registration Number: S314 YNPTransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: 89477L410M/T1T Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 46055 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Sandstone LeatherClick here for more details and images
Sparkling little TD2 with only just over 200 miles since a comprehensive and finely detailed long-term restoration. The MG T-series, for most enthusiasts, epitomises the spirit of the Abingdon marque, delivering a blend of lively performance, vintage styling and above all, the sort of wind-in-the-hair driving experience one expects from a traditional British sports car. The original T-series Midget was launched before the war, evolving into the short-lived TB and TC models, before the TD was announced in November 1949, bringing with it the first major attempt at restyling since the end of WWII. With a track widened by some five inches to improve interior space, along with new independent coil spring front suspension and rack and pinion steering (sourced from the Y-type), the TD was sold with steel disc wheels in place of the previously used wire-spoked items and bumpers (with over-riders) were standard equipment as well. The interior was revised to make it more habitable but retained the flavour of the original T-series, with folding windscreen, full instrumentation, and a minimum of superfluous decoration. Powering the TD was essentially the same XPAG 1250cc engine in use since 1939, but an increased compression ratio from 1950 saw power up from 55bhp to 60bhp and, in July 1951, the XPAG received a new block, a new sump, a new bell-housing and a new flywheel in order to accommodate a larger clutch. The engine number prefix was changed to TD2, and MG TDs fitted with this engine have subsequently become known as TD2 models. With the sports car movement in the United States in full swing, it wasn't surprising that the vast majority of TD production crossed the Atlantic. Now finished in Old English White with the correct green grille slats and a superb Apple Green interior, this original, left-hand drive TD2 has undergone a chassis-up restoration and conversion to right-hand drive. Delivered new to California in 1952 before returning to the UK in 1986, the rebuild was commenced by a retired engineer in 1996 before finally reaching fruition some 25 years later in 2019. As is evident from our images, no stone was left unturned during this comprehensive and long term project from the chassis and body through all mechanical components to the trim and final detailing, all areas received fastidious attention. The sprung steering wheel looks original as do the instruments and switches, however, the dashboard and the door cards wear fresh Rexine and the bespoke monogrammed carpets finish off the lovely cockpit. As you might expect the engine bay is tidy and very impressive. The odometer currently reads 209 miles which we guess is post-restoration, so a further period of running-in is advised to bring the best out of this delightful MG. Some 70 years have passed since TD14680 rolled off the production line, however, it's once again resplendent in its traditional colour scheme and original specification including the delightful steel wheels as it would have been all those years ago. An instantly recognisable T-Series MG, extensively rebuilt and awaiting its next custodian.SpecificationMake: MGModel: MIDGETYear: 1952Chassis Number: TD14680Registration Number: XVV 741Transmission: ManualEngine Number: 10424Drive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: Green HideClick here for more details and images
8,795 miles from new, gleaming Moonstone Blue and a superbly original Recaro interior, this is just a bit special. At its introduction in 1982, the Sierra's revolutionary new shape proved a touch more divisive than Ford had anticipated and some serious marketing became a priority, so it was the obvious choice to become the platform for Ford's new competition aspirations in conjunction with Cosworth. It fitted the brief well as it was rear-wheel drive, had good aerodynamics, albeit being prone to lift at high speeds, and was available as a three-door. The new body kit and rear spoiler would sort out the lift issues but, more importantly, Ford still needed to build 5,000 units for homologation, somewhat worrying when the company's initial approach to the dealer network came back with an estimate that suggested they could sell around 1,500 units! The eventual sales record is, of course, history. Ford went on to sell 5,545 three-door cars including the RS500, of which only 500 were built, and the Cosworth engine also found its way into nearly 30,000 Ford Sierra Saloons (Cosworth 3dr, Sapphire 2wd and 4wd).This amazing Sierra Cosworth dates from 1986 and has incredibly covered just 8,795 miles from new. Looking as crisp as ever in Moonstone Blue with a virtually unmarked Recaro grey cloth interior, just two former keepers have had the pleasure of owning this time-warp car from new. It was dry stored in 2003 and only recently emerged from hiding to undergo a thorough recommissioning in April of this year at a cost approaching £7,000. The originality of this car cannot be underestimated, and during its preparation for the sale our vendor employed a professional detailer to present the RS in its best light and he stated that it was perhaps the finest he had ever seen. It's supplied with the original purchase invoice for £16,630 from Henlys Ford, an original Henlys book pack including the owners handbook, audio guide, an official Press Information pack of the period and the Ford Service Plan booklet detailing its first service FOC and its first 6,000 miles service in April 1989 at 5,667 miles. It's simply remarkable to have this level of historical detail with an RS Cosworth all helping to corroborate the tiny mileage and astonishing originality. 'Original' is the key word here, frequently misused, but in the case of D50 UCU, totally appropriate and your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to confirm that we do not use the word lightly. The Cosworth has always been a car to draw attention, its radical 'whale tail' at the time ensured that it was always meant to be a poster boy of the era, but with their values now reaching such amazing levels, where do we see this, surely never to be repeated, low mileage example taking values today? . The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII probably marked the zenith of the Evo cult in the UK and this one registered keeper, low mileage FQ-400 is a superb example. This fabulous Evo VIII (Number 57 of 100) is very impressive and certainly one of the best we have ever seen. It was first registered on 1st March 2005 and sold by SGT Mitsubishi in Taplow to its one owner from new and has always been to the same Mitsubishi garage for servicing and maintenance. Our marque-enthusiast vendor explains that the car has been garaged its whole life, is totally rust free and has never had any welding or repairs underneath and, whilst we can’t confirm that, the little Lancer gleams like a new pin and appears virtually showroom fresh. The car is in fantastic condition throughout, the paintwork all appears original, clean and bright, and the interior is again in superb shape with minimal wear even on the drivers-side bolster. It’s fitted with four matching Dunlop Sport Max tyres, (matching tyres are required on this car due to the four-wheel drive system) and all four alloys are 'as new' and have just benefited from a full refurbishment. The car still has the original bung in the exhaust back box. These were actually removed at the dealership at PDI and thrown away, however, the owner requested for this to be replaced as he preferred the car less noisy. In total there are 20 service stamps at Mitsubishi along with a detailed printout of what was done (printout from 2014 as the computer system was updated at that point). The total cost of servicing at Mitsubishi over the years is in excess of £21,000, the cambelt was last done in July 2022 and the car also had a new clutch and flywheel replaced in 2021. The new clutch was from a later Evo 9 as the original FQ-400 clutch is notoriously hard, snatchy and heavy to use.It has also just had a full check over (August 2022), fluid change, diff oils, AYC System, brake fluid and coolant replacement by a local Mitsubishi Specialist. The Alcon front calipers were fully refurbished with new stainless piston by God Speed Brakes and new Alcon pads were also fitted.Number 57/100 is totally original, standard and unmodified with the only exception being a modern Pioneer DAB/Bluetooth head unit. We understand that everything works as it should and the air conditioning is cold. It's supplied with all the normal manuals etc. and the supporting documentation includes the original Bill of Sale, SVA Certificate, V5C, Certificate of Authenticity, both original keys and two remote fobs. This is a seriously quick motor car generating 405bhp from its 2-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and offering 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and 175mph. It's very seldom that we see a performance car of this nature that has covered just over 55,000 miles yet remains in such pristine condition. A very well-engineered, rarely used, and faithful recreation of the legendary GT40 in a fetching colour combination. The GT40 has its rightful spot in the car world Hall of Fame for its stunning and world shocking results by winning the 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969 Le Mans 24 Hour Endurance race, toppling the seemingly unstoppable racing giant that was Ferrari. With race winning and period raced GT40s comfortably selling for mid-7 figure sums, with plenty of potential to reach 8 figures soon, it is no surprise that such a vast array of replicas, tributes and homages to this iconic racer have sprung up.MDA was one of the finest replica GT40 builders in Europe, starting off as G T Developments during the 80s, building over 380 cars for clients between 1988-1994 before transitioning into MDA in 1994. With a growing customer list wanting individual car builds with differing specifications and increasing levels of accuracy required, MDA hit every marker with a level of confidence that can only come from experience. Unfortunately, despite their successes, they were still a small business which fell foul of the 2008 recession and closed its doors for good, now supplying GT40 parts under the name of G T Racing. Before they closed, this fantastic Mk1 GT40 replica was already out the door and well on its way to completion. Registered with its first and only registered owner on 1st March 2012, the white paint contrasts well with the red striping giving the ‘beauty’ side to the car and a thumping Ford small block 302cu (5-litre) Windsor V8 mated to a 5-speed manual transmission providing the ‘beast’. The car has been thoroughly enjoyed since its completion, having taken part in classic car shows and local rallies within the UK, however it has only covered 6,017 miles from new having spent its recent years on display in a museum.A lot of replicas can look and feel cheap, but we are pleased to say this MDA GT40 has quite the opposite effect. Looking at the braided lines within the engine bay, the Hi-Spec motorsport braking system and extravagant exhaust, you can clearly see that a significant amount of money was spent on this car to ensure the driving experience was as jaw dropping as the visual experience.Despite being on display, the car was always kept in running and driving condition. Furthermore, it will come to the sale having received a mechanical once-over to instil maximum confidence to the buyer. Within the history file there is a build manual, photographs and a selection of invoices for servicing and maintenance over the years.Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and whilst this is usually a glorified way of saying something has been copied, in this case one would argue that for the looks and sounds of a GT40 for 100 times less than the real deal, it's a fair compromise. Low ownership, low mileage, lovely originality and a late built car, this 280 Brooklands confirms that the Capri continues to improve with age.The Capri 280 was the final, limited edition run of the legendary Ford Coupé which had first appeared back in 1969. Ford originally intended to build only 500 turbo-charged vehicles (by Turbo Technics) complete with gold alloy wheels, but a change of production planning meant a name change to Capri 280. These cars featured a limited slip differential, a full leather Recaro interior and 15-inch, seven-spoke alloy wheels to complement the 2.8 injected V6 engine. Just 1,038 were ever made and all were finished in Brooklands Green, resulting in them, inevitably becoming known as 'Brooklands Capris'. As a fully loaded run-out special, the 280 came with six, deep-set dials which dominate the dash over the standard Capris which had to make do with two – alongside an AM radio/cassette and a lockable glovebox. This 280 ‘Brooklands’ was supplied new in the UK and first registered on 1st November 1987, meaning it was a very late built car to come off the production line. Within its first six years the car was sold three times, with the fourth owner purchasing and cherishing the car for over 20 years from 1993 until our vendor added it to his exceptional collection. The V5 shows just three former keepers and the history file is good, containing various items of paperwork including old MOT Certificates and invoices for work over the years. However, there are a few expected patches from its time in heated storage in recent years.Showing just 52,000 miles from new, this Brooklands is nicely original, presenting well in standard specification and will be delivered to us having benefited from a fresh service to bring it up to full strength. The Brooklands Green paintwork is in good condition and internally the full leather Recaro interior is in equally good condition throughout. The Capri has been kept very standard and is, thankfully, just as it was when it left the factory.Costing an optimistic £11,999 when new, one can see why only 1,038 examples ever made it off the production line but their appeal has rightfully grown over time. With only 547 examples currently believed to be residing in the UK whether SORN (361) or currently licenced (186), this low mileage, low ownership car is a lovely wholesome example of an increasingly popular car. With a lot going for it, this Capri is nicely suited to being added to a fine collection to be cherished as a swansong to the Capri or to be used and enjoyed out on the roads once again; ideally a combination of the two. This low-mileage example could yet prove a canny investment at the sensible guide price suggested.SpecificationMake: FORDModel: CAPRIYear: 1987Chassis Number: WF0CXXGAECGG10880Registration Number: E139 JASTransmission: ManualEngine Number: GG10880Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 52000 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Grey ClothClick here for more details and images
Ford Limited Editions don't come much rarer than the Zakspeed Turbo Capri making this 32,000 miles, two-owner car rather special.Silverstone Auctions continues to work its way through the 'Faster Fords' back catalogue courtesy of our vendors and we are delighted to further tick the 'Capri box' with this super original and rare Zakspeed Turbo by Ford of Europe’s well-respected tuner Erich Zakowski. Conceived early in 1980 by the Ford Motorsport Performance Vehicles Program, the idea was to build 200 units powered by the 2,300cc V6, however, the success of the newly launched 2.8-litre engine soon changed the final specification.Unique correspondence in this car's history file noted that 50 units were at their Niederzissen facility being prepared for the launch event, all with a 30,000 Deutschmark sticker price, excluding options. Although the intention was to build 200 examples between July 1981 and September 1982, numbered transmission tunnels indicate that just 155 conversions were produced and German RS dealers were then tasked with marketing this Zakspeed-inspired, left-hand drive only “Werksturbo” based on the 3.0S, but with widened Series-X bodywork, front and rear 'Ford Motorsport' badged spoilers, and deep 7.5j four-spoke RS (Ronel) alloy wheels. The interior featured the Scheel seats finished in Shark Grey crushed velour trim that were currently fitted to the Escort RS1600i in production at the same time and an RS steering wheel. The engine was based on a normally- aspirated, carburettor-equipped, 2.8-litre Cologne V6, Ford Granada (Europe) engine using electronic ignition, a Tuftrided crankshaft, heavy-duty head gaskets, HD oil pump, oil cooler, an RS exhaust, and a single Garrett T4 turbocharger providing 5.4 psi of boost resulting in 188bhp at 5500rpm. Handling was improved with the addition of a limited-slip differential, Bilstein dampers all around, an anti-dive kit, uprated RS anti-roll bars, single rear leaf springs and 7.5" x 13" Ford RS AVO four-spoke wheels with Goodyear NCT 235/60/13 tyres.Zakspeed Capris were only available through the European Ford RS Dealer network and this example was ordered by its first UK owner in 1982 and supplied by dealer Autohaus Holbelt finished in Strato Silver with a Shark Grey interior. It was subsequently acquired by our vendor in 1988 and has been cossetted by him ever since. The current indicated mileage is 32,100. The comprehensive history file contains numerous magazines featuring the Capri but more interestingly are the copies of letters from Ford Europe outlining the original plan and execution of the Zakspeed Capri run to Ford luminary Bob Lutz and others. The rarest of Capris from a time in Ford's 80s motorsport history when everything and more was possible. Always a Q-car, the 5-Series Touring here is the desirable M-Sport twin-scroll turbo model; low mileage and low owners, a hugely capable allrounder. The car that did more than any other to make the idea of a performance diesel acceptable: the BMW 535d. Indeed, it was the first ever diesel car to be welcomed onto the Top Gear test track! The fifth-generation of BMW’s 5-Series (E60 as a saloon or E61 as an estate or ‘Touring’) was produced from 2003 to 2010 and is ageing like fine wine. Even though Chris Bangles’ design was at first widely critiqued, the E60/E61 was well accepted and still looks good for its age.The E60 generation introduced various electronic features to the 5-Series, including iDrive, head-up display, active cruise control, active steering and voice control. The E60 also was the first 5-Series available with a turbocharged petrol engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission and regenerative braking. New safety features (some as options) for the E60 included adaptive headlights, night vision, active headrests, Lane Departure Warning, and high intensity emergency brake lights. In 2007, there came a model face-lift and the introduction BMW’s fuel-saving Efficient Dynamics programme (that means regenerative braking, a gearshift indicator and active aerodynamics – meaning flaps over the air intakes don’t open when the engine is cold).Today, the 535d has something of a reputation - with its twin-turbo version of the 3.0-litre M57 straight-six engine, allied to a 6-speed SMG-ll gearbox, there is 282bhp and 428lb ft of torque to enjoy. Impressive figures even by today’s standards. The car presented here is a 2010 BMW (E61) 535d Touring M Sport which has an enviable service history to back up its modest 66,227 miles in the hands of just two previous owners. Our vendor has recently entrusted the car to the very capable Darragh Doyle, an ex-F1 Mechanic, and BMW guru of ‘Everything M3s’ in Banbury. In August 2022, some £12,000 was spent to ensure this Touring is now in the best possible health. This work included a full engine, gearbox, and differential service (the latter with the fitment of a Wavetrac ATB spool), a custom remap, swirl flap and EGR cooler delete kits, a new water pump and thermostat, new turbo vacuum lines, new Bosch glow plugs, new belts/filters/fluids, a new crankshaft damper pulley, rear suspension air bags replacement and new BMW front brake pads. With a complete service history from new, low ownership and a great specification, this highly capable ground-breaking estate, is the epitome of a Q-car – a discrete appearance, with go anywhere, do anything abilities, allied to a turn of pace and power to rival much more obvious machinery – all at a very tempting guide price.(Please note that the registration 'T88 CCL' will not come with the car, it will revert back to 'YE59 VFD'.)SpecificationMake: BMWModel: 535DYear: 2010Chassis Number: WBAPX92030CR25802Registration Number: YE59 VFDTransmission: Automatic Engine Number: 25617319 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 66145 MilesMake: RHDClick here for more details and images
