The British Economic Mission to the Far East, 1930.An interesting and well written account of the trade mission to Japan and China, in a serious of lengthy letters by J. L. Edmondson, Secretary of the Federation of Calico Printers and one of the Cotton Mission delegation.‘The Cotton Commission was appointed by the government to assist the Economic Mission to the Far East in their enquiries … related to cotton goods, and to report what action should be taken to develop and increase British trade in these goods.’Edmonton left London Docks in September 1930 on the P&O ship ‘Macedonia’, travelling via the Suez Canal, he arrived in Japan in October and China in late November, leaving early March 1931.The author gives an account of social activities on board the ship and trips ashore that the numerous re-coaling stops allowed. These included Marseilles, Port Said, Aden, Colombo and Penang. In Singapore, the group ‘saw Tan Kah Kee’s famous rubber works where this astute and ruthless Chinese (who they say, sits … in his office with two armed guards in attendance) employs 1800 ‘hands’ turning out, millions of rubber shoes.’ The Mission officially commenced in Japan, where the author visited Tokyo, Kobe, Kariya, Kyoto and Osaka, undertaking ‘one endless round of engagements’. These included meetings with dignitaries, officials, and industrialists, banquets and meals with geishas and games of golf. He observed that:’The Japanese are very nice and courteous, but they are not very accommodating in offering to show their works. Certain members of the Cotton Mission were very upset over this …’; ‘I find Japanese efficiency very terrifying’; ‘Besides feasts, we have visited various works — a Government railway repair works where we saw the first engine Japan ever had, bearing a plate Vulcan works, Newton-le-Willows 1871 …’In China, visits were made to Shanghai, Nanking, Tientsin, Pekin/Peiping, Canton, Hong Kong and Kowloon, again meeting with government officials, dignitaries and industrialists (including Sir Shouson Chow), visiting cotton mills and weavers, attending banquets, sightseeing, etc. The military presence there was notable.Typescript, 92 pages, held with treasury tag, several pages worn and loose. The lot also includes some related ephemera including a New Plan of Peking, 1922.

Two cast iron mechanical money banks, largest approximately 27 cm (h). [2]. [W]Note: Mechanical cast iron banks were first manufactured in the late 1800's during the industrial revolution. The 'Jolly Banks' or money boxes were a popular item during this period and are also associated with Black Memorabilia. These items are listed on the basis that they are illustrative of a bygone culture in which there were different social norms. We understand the potential controversy surrounding this type of item but believe that providing transparent information about historical context fosters greater understanding of our complex cultural history.

James Duffield Harding (British, 1798-1863) The Corsair's Isle, circa 1829 Watercolour on paper Signed with initials to base of a column Measures approx. 70cm x 100cm excluding frame James Duffield Hardin was a landscape and topographical painter, working mainly in watercolour. For a brief period he was a pupil of Samuel Prout. Subsequently, he was apprenticed to the engraver John Pye. He exhibited in London from 1811 to 1864 at the Old Watercolour Society and the Royal Academy. He was a pioneer in the movement for art instruction in schools, and for the training of art masters. He published many books on teaching drawing. He taught Ruskin, among others, and when the first volume of Modern Painters appeared in 1843, many of Harding's old pupils recognised his lessons ' on skies ', ' on waters ', ' on mountains ', etch. and especially his theory that three-drawing should be based upon the laws of tree growth. Ruskin said that, next to Turner, Harding was ' unquestionably the greatest master of foliage in Europe. ' He visited Italy in 1824; went frequently to the Continent after that date; and visited Verona, Venice, and Mantua with Ruskin in September 1845. The Corsair, a poem in herois couplets by Lord Byron, published in 1814. Conrad, a pirate chief in the Aegean Sea, a man of many vices and one virtue (a certain sense of chivalry), receives warning that Seyd, the Turkish Pasha, is preparing a fleet for the a descent on the island. He determines to anticipate him, takes leave of his beloved Medora, arrives at Pasha's rallying point at night, and introduces himself to his presence as a dervish escaped from the pirates. The premature firing of the Pasha's galleys by Conrad's men gives warning of intended coup, which is only partially successful. Conrad is wounded and take prisoner, but not before he had rescued Gulnare, the chief slave in the Pasha's harem, from imminent death. She becomes enamoured of him, obtains the postponement of his execution, and finally brings him a dagger wherewith he may kill Seyd in his sleep. From this act he revolts, whereupon she herself ills the Pasha, and escapes with Conrad. But she had now become repulsive of him. They arrive at the pirate island where Conrad finds Medora dead from grief at the reported slaying of her lover. Conrad disappears and is never heard of more. Provenance: Acquired by current owner at The Leicester Galleries, Ryder Street, London in 2003 via Peter Nahum. Correspondence letters between the gallery and current owner present.
