WILDE OSCAR: (1854-1900) Irish Playwright & Novelist. Bold, purple fountain pen ink signature (`Oscar Wilde`) on a trompe-l`oeil card featured on a highly attractive 8vo page removed from an autograph album. The page also bears three other signatures, two in the same purple ink, including May Fortescue and Dorothy Nevill. The third, unidentified signature, is dated London, 16th August 1887. The decorative page features an original watercolour of the American Stars and Stripes flag as executed by the collector, May Ostlere. VG The page was originally contained in an album of autographs compiled by May Ostlere, an author and composer of several Waltzes. Other signatures in the album at one time included those of William F. Cody and Annie Oakley which Ostlere obtained on the 7th May 1887 shortly before Buffalo Bill`s Wild West Show opened in London. As the fourth signature on the page provides a terminus ante quern, and because Wilde`s signature is in the same distinctive ink as Fortescue and Nevill`s, it would be safe to presume that the three were obtained on the same occasion, and at one with an American theme given the illustration of the flag. It could therefore be suggested with some conviction that Wilde`s signature was penned in the album when he visited the Wild West show and, along with most of fashionable London, paid tribute to Cody and Oakley. In May 1887 Wilde had been appointed editor of Lady`s World and he spent much of the month locating potential contributors, including Lady Dorothy Nevill (1826-1913) English Writer and Hostess. May Fortescue-actress and soprano, the original Ella in Gilbert & Sullivan`s Patience which was first performed at the Opera Comique in London on 23rd April 1881.

I think my sonnet will last him longer than the eulogies now being lavished on him!` Douglas concludes `As I remarked in the Preface to my Collected Satires (1926), "In the long run, it is well to remember, the poet always gets the last word." ` A letter of interesting content. VG. Horace Avory (1851-1935) English Criminal Lawyer involved in many sensational trials including that of Oscar Wilde in 1895. Some of the most brilliant minds in the world have been self-educated.` The writer continues `What is necessary to creative writing is a creative mind. If you lack that, you are wasting your time. No doubt there are several kinds of first-class minds, but they do not all operate in the same way.` Accompanied by the original envelope. A scarce letter with interesting content. EX
