A group of silk appliqué fragments, first half 18th century, trailing flowers and foliage, in need of remounting, the longest element approximately 150cm long Similar crewel-work fragments can be found mounted on the set of chairs and four-poster bed recently sold in these rooms removed from Weston Hall and worked by Susanna Jennens (1688-1760), probably in the 1730s-40s. A 'Deci-Bell' (Jennings) one armed bandit, on first 5 new pence play, coin escalator, illuminated coin head, win line with mask and Tic Tic Toe totalisator, bronze Red Indian head above jackpot window, in chrome case, with US Patent numbers to rear, on a simulated rosewood veneered stand base, 153cm high overallCondition Report: The rear panel is locked with a specialist key which is present at Dreweatts. The inner workings have been inspected but Dreweatts have not and cannot test the action and workings and therefore cannot make any guarantees or comments as to playability or the amount of restoration work likely required to make it work. When opened there was one loose spring in the case - its origins are unknown.There is a cache of money in the lenticule but not clear way of retrieving this to play or test. There is also money 'stuck; in the upper window below the descriptive panel. The arm to the side does rotate a short way and return to the original positionThe case with marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions, the chrome uneven to the touch, there are also areas of pitting and loss to the surface, the money-in slot appears to have been taped over previously removing some of the surface. In 1848, the company moved to 22 Berners Street, expanded in 1853 into 26 Berners Street. The Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1862 saw their first awarded prize for an exhibited suite of library furniture. In 1865, George Howard patented a method for the wood veneering of walls and, in 1867, a patent for the improved production of parquet flooring. The firm exhibited and won medals at the 1878 Paris Exhibition, the 1894 Antwerp Exhibition, the Paris Exhibition of 1900 and were awarded the first of their royal warrants in 1901.Condition report: Probably re-polished. No obvious major faults. The top with two ringlet marks. To the edge with a darkened stain. The base structurally good. With some scratches and marks commensurate with age and use.Ready for a new home.

Blakeman, 1956', also with cleaning instructions,lower panels 52cm wide, 42cm highcentral panel 52cm wide, 80cm highside panels 52cm wide, 95cm highcentral roundel 32cm wide, 33cm hightwo triangular larger 26 x 19cm two triangular smaller 21 x 11.5cm (11)Wilhelmina Geddes (1887-1955)Ulster-born Wilhelmina Geddes is widely regarded as one of the outstanding designers and makers of stained glass working in the first half of the twentieth century. Trained at Belfast Art School and the Metropolitan College of Art in Dublin, Geddes absorbed the expressive and technical principles of the Arts & Crafts Movement, translating these into a uniquely powerful personal idiom.Some of her earliest work was shown at the important Exhibition of British and Irish Decorative Arts at the Louvre, Paris, in 1914. Subsequently she was given the prestigious commission for a war memorial window (1919) in the Governor-General’s Church (St Bartholomew’s) in Ottawa. Made at the ‘Tower of Glass’ studio in Dublin, it was exhibited to great acclaim in London before its installation in Canada. Moving to London in 1925, she thereafter worked at the renowned ‘Glass House’ studios (Messrs Lowndes & Drury) in Fulham, London. Amongst the commissions she completed in the inter-war period, were windows for churches at Laleham in Middlesex (1926), Northchapel in Sussex (1930), Otterden in Kent (1933) and for St Martin’s Cathedral at Ypres, Belgium (1938). These and other works profoundly impressed younger artists such as Evie Hone and John Piper.The 3-light window depicting Virtues (Faith, Hope and Charity) was commissioned by the Rev. Chad Varah, a radical Anglican priest (and future founder of the Samaritans) who had been appointed rector of St Paul’s Church, St John’s Hill, Battersea (near Clapham Junction) in 1949. Intent on restoring and embellishing the church after war damage, Varah had contacted John Piper, seeking a recommendation for a modern stained glass artist. He was advised to contact Geddes who, despite poor health and struggling with work on two other commissions for London suburban churches – All Hallows, Greenford (1951-2) and St Mildred’s, Lee (1953-4) – agreed to make a design.By now, Geddes’ style had evolved into a remarkably distilled form of monumental expressionism, which was quite unique in British stained glass and which entailed subtle choices of coloured glass and intricate craft processes in the glass-painting. With the assistance of two young craftsmen, Donald Drury and Charles Blakeman, Geddes was able to finish the windows for Greenford and Lee, but her deteriorating eyesight and other ailments made it impossible for her to complete the full-size working cartoons for Battersea. After collapsing in the street and being admitted to St Pancras Hospital, Wilhelmina Geddes died, aged 68, on 10 August 1955.It was decided that the Battersea window, Geddes’ final commission, should be completed from the artist’s designs by Charles Blakeman, who was also working at the Fulham Glass House. Blakeman admired Geddes’ work immensely, having closely observed her design and craft techniques as she carried out her Greenford and Lee projects, and he was determined to do justice to her ideas for the window. The artist’s biographer, the late Dr Nicola Gordon Bowe, recorded that by ‘using Geddes’s sketches and cartoons, however illegible, Blakeman was able to adhere to her designs relatively faithfully while still producing a window clearly his own’. The window was finally unveiled in 1956, when it was seen by Rev. Chad Varah, who was ‘highly impressed’ by it.The window depicts Faith, Hope and Charity as three female angelic figures, whose seated forms fill each lancet. At the base of the window are two of the Evangelists and, in the centre, a scene of the Annunciation. Above the figure of Faith is a vignette of St Thomas and Christ, while Hope holds a miniature scene of Noah’s Ark and above Charity is a figure of St Mary Magdalene. The upper tracery lights contain depictions of the Moon and Sun with, in the centre, the Christ Child. An inscription in the right-hand light records that ‘THIS WINDOW WAS DESIGNED BY THE LATE W. M. GEDDES AND MADE BY C. BLAKEMAN 1956'.When St Paul’s church was amalgamated with another parish in the 1970s, the Geddes-Blakeman window was obscured by internal alterations to the building and was effectively inaccessible. The church was finally declared redundant in recent years and later converted to housing. As part of the structural alterations, the stained glass window was removed. An Art Deco Cuban mahogany desk,attributed to Alfred Portneuve, c.1930, the semicircular top with a fan veneer, over a central drawer, and flanked with four drawers on pedestal stands, 182cm wide115cm deep116.5cm high, andthree armchairs (4)The form is based on the 'Tardieu' form of bureau, first shown by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann at the Salons des Artistes Décorateurs of 1929. Ruhlmann used the same form in the bureau 'Fricotelle' of 1931. The three armchairs bear close similarities to the chairs designed by Ruhlmann for the ship, the SS Île de France. Portneuve was Ruhlmann's nephew and he took over the workshops on his uncle's death, producing a number of pieces specific to Ruhlmann's work, as well as variants adapted from his uncle's designs.Provenance: Sotheby’s, 'Applied Arts from 1880', 30 October 1992, lot 271.
A silver-plated 'Rocket' cocktail shaker,designed by J A Henkels, Solingen, comprising: five beakers, a flask with a screw cap, a citrus squeezer and base, a funnel, which detaches, the shaft fitted with a corkscrew, fitting into the rocket-shaped body, with nose cone and fin base, engraved 'To Dear Old 'Chet' from Washington Hangar Quiet Birdmen 1941', variously stamped '22' and 'Germany',30.5cm high‘The Quiet Birdmen’The Quiet Birdmen are a secretive aviators' club in the United States. It was founded by World War One pilots and later, outside of New York where the first meetings had taken place, other Quiet Birdmen regional groups, or hangars, were formed.Harold Hersey, the editor of 'Aces High' magazine, ironically called the group 'The Quiet Birdmen' because they were so boisterous, and this became their adopted name. In the 1920s, membership cost one dollar and lasted until death. The emblem of the club was a blue shield with the letters 'QB' in silver, the shield flanked by silver wings. Only male aviators were allowed to join, not female aviators or ‘Keewees’ (non-flyers). Depending on its location, current QB regular activities generally reflect the age of its members. Apparently, meetings are started with a silent toast to deceased members, with glasses raised to the west in keeping with an old pilot's expression, euphemistically referring to death as having ‘Gone West’.Condition report: All items fit in the body, four cups to the nose cone and measure and single beaker in the fin section. Four beakers and measure stamped 'Germany'. Some wear to the gilt interior. One back fin slightly bent. Good overall condition. Largest beaker 5.5cm high. 9cm diameter approx.

A Victorian electroplated regimental cup (tyg), The Highland Light Infantry, (Militia), by Elkington and Co, 1872, tapering circular form, with three bands of reeded decoration, plain handles, engraved with the badge and inscribed 'Presented to The Mess Highland Lt. Infantry (Militia), by F.G. Kinloch on his appointment to the 92nd Highlanders, June 1874', height 16.8cm. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. Lieutenant Francis Kinloch (1852-1879) went to school at Brighton College and in 1872 he joined the 76th Inverness, Banff, Moray and Nair Regiment of Militia (Highland Light Infantry). He was soon appointed an instructor in musketry having attained a first class certificate at the School of Musketry at Hythe in Kent. In 1874 he joined the 92 Gordon Highlanders, already in India, and he immediately went to join the battalion in Bengal. He went on in 1878 to become the adjutant of the 5th Bengal Cavalry. During the second Afghan war he was en route to join his Regiment, when he was ambushed and murdered in the Kurram valley.
A pair of William IV silver Old England pattern tablespoons, by Jonathan Hayne, London 1832, the reverse of the bowl with acorns and oak leaves, the handle with roses, thistles and shamrock, initialled, length 22.5cm, approx. weight 6.8oz. (2) It is probable that this pattern was first designed for the coronation of William IV.
