*Austin Osman Spare (British, 1886-1956) - ' Stealing the Fire from Heaven' Pen and ink on paper laid down on board - 57 x 39.5cm - Initialled 'AOS' lower left and dated 1911-2 - Illustration for 'The Book of Pleasure' published in 1913 - Provenance: The Artist, from whom acquired by Dr Thomas W. Lumsden and by family descent. - NOTE: An important and early magical work. Stealing the Fire from Heaven In his early development as an artist, Spare was greatly influenced by the occult. His lasting contribution to the field was the assertion that the forms of ritual magic which had dominated Western esotericism for hundreds of years were too complex and ultimately unnecessary. In the present lot dating from 1911-2, the artist provides a symbolic summary for his process of Promethean attainment, summarised in The Book of Pleasure, p.38: 'Now let him imagine a union takes place between himself (the mystic union of Ego and Absolute). The nectar emitted, let him drink slowly, again and again. After this astonishing experience his passion is incomparable, there is nothing in the world he will desire: unless he wills. That is why people do not understand me. The ecstasy in its emotion is omnigenous. Know it as the nectar of life, the Syllubub of Sun and Moon. Verily he steals the fire from Heaven: the greatest act of bravery in the world.' The present lot was first illustrated in his privately published work, The Book of Pleasure (1913), but appeared again in the widely circulated Form: A Quarterly of the Arts (1916). For the second and more widely distributed publication, Spare added hair across the breast (lower centre), presumably at the request of the publisher, John Lane. Thomas Lumsden acquired the work direct from the artist on July 28th, 1915. Literature: Austin Osman Spare. The Book of Pleasure (Self-Love) The Psychology of Ecstasy (London: Co-operative Printing Company, 1913), p. 36. - We are grateful to Robert Shehu-Ansell for providing further research and assistance with the catalogue notes for works by Austin Osman Spare.

*Austin Osman Spare (British, 1886-1956) - ''The Dwellers at the Gates of Silent Memory' - Pen and ink on paper laid down on board - 56 x 39cm - Initialled 'AOS' lower left and dated 1912 - Illustration for 'The Book of Pleasure' published in 1913 - Provenance: The Artist, from whom acquired by Dr Thomas W. Lumsden and by family descent. - NOTE: A fine pen and ink study from Spare's most influential published work. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Darwinism had become established as the dominant theory for the evolution of life. When psychoanalysis arrived at the dawn of the twentieth century, Austin Spare developed ideas that sought to unite both theories under the premise of magical attainment. First published in The Book of Pleasure (1913), in the Chapter titled 'The Sub-Consciousness', his theory of 'atavistic resurgence' as it later became known, called for the individual to explore inwardly: 'Know the sub-conscious to be the epitome of all experience and wisdom, past incarnations as men, animals, birds, vegetable life, etc., etc, everything that exists, has and ever will exist. Each being a stratum in the order of evolution. Naturally then, the lower we probe into these strata, the earlier will be the forms of life we arrive at; the last is the Almighty Simplicity. And if we succeed in awakening them, we shall gain their properties, and our accomplishment will correspond.' The Book of Pleasure, p. 47. The present lot opens the Chapter cited above and illustrates these ideas. The various animal forms and swirling threads would recur through the artist's work until his death in 1956. Literature: Austin Osman Spare. The Book of Pleasure (Self-Love) The Psychology of Ecstasy (London: Co-operative Printing Company, 1913), p. 46. - We are grateful to Robert Shehu-Ansell for providing further research and assistance with the catalogue notes for works by Austin Osman Spare.
