Whitaker, 1792. 8vo, later bound in cloth-backed boards with paper label to spine; pp. [26 (title, verso blank, Preface (4), Contents (20)], 451, [1 (blank)] (lacking pp. 253-8); eng. port. frontis., 12 Bills of Fare, one plate (on carving), 7 pages letter-press tables to text. The authors (Principal Cooks at the Crown and Anchor on the Strand) did not intend to ''ransack the Annals of Antiquity, with a View to discover what was the food of our first Parents in the Garden of Eden'' but simply wanted to contribute to the Culinary Science, which they felt had, in their age, reached ''a very high Degree of Perfection.''Staining to inner margins of Bills, affecting images, lacking pp. 253-8, otherwise very good.

Brookes, Richard The Art of Angling. Printed by and for John Watts at the Printing-Office in Wild Court near Lincoln's-Inn Fields, 1740. 8vo, full leather; pp. [16 (title, verso blank, Dedication (4), Preface (5), Contents (5)], [1]-249, [11 (Index (6), Advertisments (5)]; title printed in red and black, head- and tail-pieces, floriated initials, 133 woodcut illus to text. First edition. A hugely popular 18th-century angling manual, extensively covering sea-fish like flying-fish, swordfish and shark along with the more usual river fish.Binding rubbed and scuffed with cracking joints, but a very good copy.
Swan (Mr Joseph FRCS) A Minute Dissection of the Cerebral Nerves from their Origin to their Terminations, and to their Conjunction with the Nerves of the Medulla Spinalis, and Viscera authentical by Preperations of the dissected Parts. Hand-written, ?c. 1825-7 [vide infra]. 4to, contemporary diced calf; 144 leaves written on one side only. Joseph Swan was a highly successful and brilliant anatomist whose retiring and modest attitude kept him long underappreciated, according to Plarr's Lives online. He won two Jacksonian Prizes at the Royal College of Surgeons as well as two Triennial Prizes (which has only been awarded twelve times since first offered in 1822). This is a copy of the essay submitted for that second prize. Dating this copy precisely has been difficult. The prize was awarded for the years 1825-7, hence the date above. We are grateful to the Royal College Archives for confirming that although there seems to be nothing which states the College had to keep the prize essays, they were submitted anonymously. Given this it seems unlikely this is the original submission as it would have been unlikely to have been returned or named on the title page. It does seem likely that Swan would have kept a personal copy for his own records, which this could be. This would be supported by a pencil note opposite p.143 recording that sample X was ''Delivered to Mr Howitt for Mr Swan March 18th 1829''. This is complicated though by a reference footnote which lists the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal as a source. The volume number appears to be 77, however vol. 77 was issued in 1852. It could perhaps be Vol. 11 (1815). In neither case though is there a ''p.564''. The footnote seems integral based on the rest of the volume, rather than added later. It would seem odd that Swan would not have sourced a reference to a case at the time and deliberately added a printed reference thirty years later, given that he lists the case details in the text, and does give sources in other cases. It might be that Swan had intended the work for later publication. He published his 1819 Jacksonian Prize in 1820, and did publish other works on the nerves, but this essay is not listed amongst them under his entry in Plarr's Lives online. It would seem odd that he would publish the essay so late after or include the sample list with explanatory header. He was not searching for new publications as he published works in 1853 and 54. It seems most likely that this was Swan's copy, made at the time for his own use when he submitted the anonymous copy.Spine separated at lower joint but attached to upper board, otherwise very good.
Burtt, G.F. (compiler) Bound volume of original reference work relating to cross-channel and costal paddle steamers, compiled in the 1930s and comprising typescript notes and letters received in response to queries from Lloyds, shipbuilders, shipping and transport firms, railways and the Admiralty. 4to, half-leather; numerous leaves of typescript, letters and similar mounted or tipped-in. Frank Burtt was a railway engineer and draughtsman, as well as a keen photographer, postcard publisher and author. He first worked as an apprentice engine fitter at the New Cross Works of the LBSC. A talented though ''fiery little man with a trooper's vocabulary'', he was promoted to the Drawing Office at their Brighton works, where he served under a succession of Chief Mechanical Engineers, starting with Robert Billinton and ending with R.E.L. Maunsell. As part of this he was required to photograph new locomotives and he used this opportunity to publish postcards on the side. He would eventually publish cards of trains, steamers, and rural life around Ringmer, Sussex. He was a founder member of both the Stephenson Locomotive Society and the Institution of Locomotive Engineers. It is possible this latter helped when dealing with some of the shipping and railway firms with whom he corresponded, as his return address often mentions this association. As well as locos he was passionate about steamboats. He published his first book on the subject, Cross-Channel and Coastal Paddle Steamers, in 1934 (reprinted in 1937) and a second (his last book) on Steamers of the Thames and Medway in 1949. It seems likely the material gathered here was intended for these publications as it principally dates from the 1930s. In fact one letter at least is from a fan: A.T. Stace writes in invitation extended in the first book to offer praise and corrections to certain points about the Folkestone-Boulogne Cross-Channel service. Burtt also wrote four books in the Ian Allan ABC Locomotive Series and frequently used his own photographs to illustrate the works. The whole is a highly useful archive on the subject assembled by a dedicated, though amateur, expert.
The Holy Bible [KJV]. ?Robert Barker and Assignes of John Bill, 1634 (no title-page vide infra). Folio, full calf; head- and tail-pieces, decorated initials; incomplete, signatures begin at B2 (lacking A1-4 and B1 according to Herbert 353), missing G4, Z3, 2H3, 2O5, 2P4, 3C4, 3D6, 3H6, 3K3+4, 3T5, 4C2, 4N2, 5M1, 5T5, 6D1-6 (end according to Herbert). Black letter. The King James Version of the Bible is seen as one of the most important and influential texts in the English language. It was published at first to challenge the multiplicity of competing editions, not least the Calvinist Geneva Bible (See Lots 1-5) and the Catholic Douai-Rheims Bible. The committee selected what they saw as the best of all of the previous translations to achieve the best possible version of the Bible they could. It may not have originated as many idioms as popular thought would hold, but it did popularise them beyond all previous conception. Main title missing but the ''Almanacke for xxxix. yeeres.'' opens at 1632, Barker still held the licence to print the Bible at this point (before the Star Chamber deprived him for printing the ''Wicked'' Bible). Herbert lists no distinct folio edition for 1632, however there is one for 1634 (487) agreeing with this one in locations of ''These to bee observed...'' and ''To finde Easter for euer'' and with version of Heb. xii. I. Signature details agree with 1617 folio (353). (See Lot 4 for Robert Barker) Herbert 487.w.a.f.

Repton (Humphry) Designs for the Pavillon at Brighton, Printed for J.C. Stadler, No. 15, Villiers Street, The Strand, 1808. Folio, half red morocco over marbled boards by T. Mullen, Anglesea Street, [Dublin], sometime sympathetically rebacked retaining original spine, upper board with paper label, spine gilt in compartments, speckled edges; eng. frontis. (bound with text), hand-coloured plan, 18 aquatints, nine hand-coloured and six with overslips, one with overpage, one double-page, one folding, two with sepia wash; provenance: Countess of Mayo (leather book label to upper board). First edition, pages watermarked 1807. By the late-eighteenth century, the natural panoramic gardens approach of 'Capability' Brown had started to fall out of fashion. Gardeners such as Humphrey Repton looked instead to elements of informality to give character to gardens. Repton's genius was in marketing. His 'little red-books' showed landowners, and thus prospective customers, 'before' and 'after' views via a 'lift the flap' device to reveal comparisons. Repton was very successful and, in 1805, the future George IV asked him to redevelop the Royal Pavilion at Brighton. The red book replaced the Pavilion's neoclassical façade with one based upon a fantasy Mughal palace, complete with an extensive flower garden of exotic flowers. Unfortunately the project was never begun due to the Prince's financial problems. It was partially realised when the Pavilion was finally redeveloped by John Nash from 1814. With two additional loose prints of the Pavilion.Binding rubbed and scuffed though still tight, ffep creased, small marginal tear to folding plate at fold, not affecting image, plate still intact, otherwise bar slight, occasional foxing and marking, a clean, intact copy of an impressive work.

Robert de Vaugondy (Gilles) L'Empire du Japon, [later than 1750], glazed and framed, hand-coloured in wash and outline. Dating from the height of French cartography this map was the work of Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, a descendant of the great, precise cartographer Nicolas Sanson. Gilles inherited the family firm in 1730, enlarging the stock by purchasing the estate of another great cartographer, Hubert Jaillot. He would be honoured in 1730 with the title of Cartographer to the King. This map was first produced in 1750, revising material from the firm's stock. Critically Gilles excluded the fictional island of Matsumae, a common error on European maps of the time, and brought a previously unknown accuracy to the work which maintained its reputation into the 19th century. Despite all this Hokkaido ''Terre D'Yedso'') is strangely depicted as a somewhat vague addition off the coast of Honshu.

Cricket Lindsay Hassett 31cm x22cm signature including signed b/w photo and information plate both mounted to high standard. Arthur Lindsay Hassett MBE (28 August 1913 – 16 June 1993) was a cricketer who played for Victoria and Australia. The diminutive Hassett was an elegant middle-order batsman, described by Wisden as, ... a master of nearly every stroke... his superb timing, nimble footwork and strong wrists enabled him to make batting look a simple matter. His sporting career at school singled him out as a precocious talent, but he took a number of seasons to secure a regular place in first-class cricket and initially struggled to make large scores. Selected for the 1938 tour of England with only one first-class century to his name, Hassett established himself with three consecutive first-class tons at the start of the campaign. Although he struggled in the Tests, he played a crucial role in Australia's win in the Fourth TEst. with a composed display in the run-chase which sealed the retention of the Ashes. He was part of the fearsome West Indian pace battery, together with Joel Garner, Andy Roberts, Sylvester Clarke, Colin Croft, Wayne Daniel and the late Malcolm Marshall that devastated batting line-ups throughout the world in the seventies and early eighties. Early in his Test career, in 1976, Holding broke the record for best bowling figures in a Test match by a West Indies bowler, 14 wickets for 149 runs (14/149). The record still stands.
